| ANGEL CAGE - latest update 13th SEPT 2006 | ||
ANGEL CAGE..........various people have been
talking about a Pixies style mix of girl fronted contradictions and heavy
riffs - that'll do us. VOX said "Angel Cage's debut takes the visceral
gnashing of PJ Harvey, the icy vibrato of Siouxsie, a chiming Cocteaus
twinkle or two, some brutal Pixies riffing.. There's all the stylised savagery
and cool attitude that Elastica, for all the hype, never managed to deliver..."
"they sound like they've just stolen the world and painted it silver. Something special indeed..." (Kerrang) |

Cage Actually started life as Angel Interceptor, the debut single upset
Captain Scarlet and his indestructible lawyers, so by the
time the second single came out to excellent underground reviews the five
of them were collectively known an Angel Cage....We actually released four
singles and an album - Sophie Magic - We've got the album on now, it still
sounds as exciting as it did when we originally put it out in 1995, actually
it's frustrating when you compare the media fuss that some bands are enjoying
(and deserving) right now to the relative lack of interest afforded to
Angel Cage in '95 (true, we were enduring a brit pop strangle hold on our
mainstream media at the time, a lot of fine bands were being ignored while
Oasis, Bluetones and the bloody tedium of Cast hogged the radio and press
attention - back then before the www the mainstream press mattered). Angel
Cage never got the attention we enjoyed with Cay four years later, by then
the musical climate had changed though, it was far easier for Cay (thank
god for the death of Brit Pop). Cay and Angel Cage are/were two very similar
bands, both endured the lazy (but, hey, justified if you want a convenient
reference point that gives you a general idea) Hole comparisons, both are/were
electric live, both fronted by a rather dangerous girl with an equally
dangerous guitar (actually when Cay's first single came out several people
hopefully called us to ask if it was Angel Cage re-emerging) - Angel Cage
certainly had the far better songs (not saying Cay don't have fine songs),
Robin Key and Jean Hare were (still are?) a potent song writing force -
Sophie Magic is made up of excellent song based scathing Pixies/Babes In
Toyland style earfood.... we're still very proud of it - Angel Cage could
have been something very special, for a fleeting moment they were......
sometimes a band should just make one classic album and then destroy it
all.....
OR MAYBE it wasn't all over, ANGEL CAGE came back in 2003 after several soul destroying encounters with clueless major labels and even more clueless big talking managers and evolved in to YOUR HIGHNESS - GO HERE |

| ANGEL
CAGE - Sophie Magic (ORG) - They used to be called Angel Interceptor,
but the legal brains behind Captain Scarlet weren't so keen. Newly renamed
but still bruisingly confident, London indie crow Angel Cage deal in armour-
plated guitar pop which marries the slashing energy of riot grrrl to frayed,
unhinged melodies. Singer Jean Hare has a vicious way with vocals, taking
gentle strummer `Believe' one minute but snarling 'you're not as big as
you think, I'll knock you down" the next. Although released on a fanzine
offshoot label and championed by London alternative radio station XFM,
Angel Cage's debut is clearly aimed beyond narrow indie horizons. There
are dozens of reference points from the visceral gnashing of Polly Harvey,
the icy vibrato of Siouxsie, a chiming Cocteaus twinkle or two, some brutal
Pixies riffing, but none of them boil down to slavish imitation. There's
all the stylised savagery and cool attitude that Elastica, for all the
hype, never managed to deliver. Like Captain Scarlet himself, Angel Cage
sound pretty indestructible. (Stephen Dalton, VOX Magazine)
Sophie
Magic (ORG Records) – KKKK - THEY'VE GONE from fluffy jumpers to leather
jackets. They've gone from shouting at things and looking like tarts, to
this debut album which makes them sound like they've just stolen the world
and painted it silver. Something special indeed. Something special has
happened to Angel Cage (formerly Angel interceptor) since they discovered
they were better than their squat/indie roots. A banner in the crowd at
a Scottish Terrorvision show read `Angel Cage for Donington!'. Now that
would be fucking hilarious. Not a chance. Smash Hammerbox's Carrie Acre,
the Pepperami advert and Vivienne Westwood into a day-glococktail of crooning
mischief, and you're close to vocalist Jean Hare's manic worldview. Add
the Nymphs, Hole, Boston and Iggy for musical launchpads. Light the blue
touchpaper and prepare for the perfectly bullish `Princess Die', the pretty
`Dagenham' and the enormous `Cruiser'.Seek out `Sophie Magic' and go paint
your town silver.
