| Some
sort of super massive black hole |
We saw 2 speckled rattlesnakes,
a great horned owl, a leaf nose snake, a banded gecko, a spiny lizard,
two other kinds of lizards, I think I saw a ringtailed cat, a California
tree frog, three kinds of ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, about 20 plant
species I can now name, night hawks, lots of bats... Some sort of super
massive
black hole. |

COMES, THE SAGA OF THE DAMNED AND OLD PUNKS (AND PROGS) WHO
NEVER DIE
CASEY CHAOS To Front
THE
DAMNED At their 30-Year Anniversary Gig - The founding members
of THE DAMNED, Rat Scabies and Brian James, have announced the 30-year
anniversary of the release of their debut album "Damned Damned Damned"
and will be performing the album in its entirety at the 100 Club in London.
And what's more, they've decided that Casey Chaos from AMEN will
be the lead singer for the evening.
Commented Scabies: "Brian
and I were quite adamant that we wanted to have Casey do this gig. There
were no other names above his. AMEN is the only band I've seen in the last
10 years who are truly punk rock. We don't know what will happen when Casey
gets onstage with us and that's the way we like it."
Commented Chaos: "To share
the stage with Rat and Brian on this night will be engraved into my epitaph
as the most important show of my life! 'Damned Damned Damned' changed my
life as well as musical history. I'm gonna treat this with the utmost respect
for them and their fans. I want to do everything I can to do it justice
and make Rat, Brian, Captain, Vanian, Algy and everyone else proud of what
they have achieved and celebrate their contribution to punk rock and the
legacy that they left. To say that I am humbled and honored is inappropriate.
I am ready to slash my throat at the altar of THE DAMNED in dedication
to all the lives they changed. I am ready to destroy."
This show will be at London's
100 Club on July 6, 2006.
Nevermind the Damned here's
WHIMWISE,
the band led by Nick May (ex Dagaband, Tamarisk, The Enid) have been added
to the bill as special guests to classic Canadian pomp/prog band SAGA
(and recently I’ve been watching this little complex grow and you know,
you know that Saga are back to sounding like their very best early days
for those who knew them at their early 80’s height you’ve got to know)
Make humblesteps next Wednesday 24th of May over to The Highbury Garage,
Islington, London.

This week's Other Rock Show
playlist details, roughly as played....
THINKING PLAGUE are
a US based band who've been around for a long time. Unique, way ahead of
their time, too dark and edgy for much of the prog scene, unfortunately
not very prolific, but they did release a new album a couple of years ago.
One of the finest bands on the planet, though. This was from 'In This Life'
which you can get from ReR or Cuneiform Records.
HELLA you can reach
on http://www.hellaband.com - check out the video of 'Biblical Violence':
simply shot, it’s just a hold of the two Hella musicians (Spencer
Seim and Zack Hill) playing together, and it's phenomenal. Show it
to your annoying drummer friend to shut him/her up for the rest of the
day.
LORDS are a glorious
avanty-blues band from Leeds - huge fun live, and 'It Ain’t A Hate Thing,
It’s A Love Thing' is a flawless album. From Gringo Records www.gringorecords.com
KAZAK is a trans-Atlantic
collaboration between the mysterious Gringoman and someone else. More info
at www.myspace.com/kazakthedog
TOOL are one of the
biggest bands in the world now, but 'Vicarious' is in 7/8, so this slice
off the new album gets in
LAPSUS LINGUAE - This
(unannounced!) downloaded Lapsus Linguae track begins with a dialogue about
the Queen Mother eating a corgi, possibly recorded at their jaw-dropping
Bull & Gate gig a couple of months back. www.lapsuslinguae.co.uk
for more info or download it while is still up on their page at www.myspace.com/lapsuslinguae
DEERHOOF - No apologies
for playing 'Spirit Ditties Of No Tone' again... everyone has to have Deerhoof
in their life on a regular basis, and the lyrics* could be a hymn to the
Resonance spirit...
TOUGH GUY FANTASY
is a collaboration of Zach Hill from Hella and most of Generic. This line-up
also play as the Arctic Boys, but much more quietly.
MAGMA are an incredible,
legendary, bizarre and a glorious force of nature/seventies rock band from
France. All their lyrics are in an invented language, Kobaian, complete
with alphabet and grammar, and composed by stupendous drummer Christian
Vander. Occasionally still play awesome gigs. 'The Last Seven Minutes'
is on their superb 1978 album, Attahk. www.snappermusic.com
ZACH HILL AND MICK BARR
- More Hella-based collaboration, this time Zach Hill with Mick Barr from
Orthrelm! From 'Shred Earthship' on Kill Rock Stars.
MICHAEL MELLENDER
is now in Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, but this is one of his shamefully
unreleased solo works. SGM have a new album out, which I'd play you
if I could get hold of it - samples on www.sleepytimegorillamuseum.com
THE CURTAINS are gently
strange and on the excellent Frenetic Records, more info from www.freneticrecords.com
NEXT LIFE are reportedly
gobsmacking live. Downloads on www.cockrockdisco.com
FUCKING CHAMPS - 'Some
Swords' is from the recent Fucking Champs album "III"... on Kill Rock Stars?
RUINS are a Japanese
duo who like Magma a lot and sing an invented language (possibly a dialect
of Kobaian, or a different planet entirely. Does anyone know? The Magaibutsu
web site is a little difficult to navigate). Drummer Tatsuya Yoshida
is the composer, last I heard he was looking for a new bassist as he's
worn out the old one (I'm guessing).
GUANOMAN - Someone
called Guanoman said he liked The Other Rock Show on the ResonanceFM forum,
I did a bit of surfing and found www.myspace.com/guanomanmusic
...very good stuff, especially the Bungle/Locust/Fantomas/Cardiacs/Ruinsness
of "15 Deaths Of". Crikey.
QUACK QUACK are lovely,
they’re from Leeds, sound like Neu! and Don Caballero and are must-see
live. www.runofthemillrecords.co.uk

DEMO TIME |
Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
ALLERGO – Tasty set of demos,
two discs, one loaded with earfood, the other with eye candy (just in time
for another round of Organ TV), They’re a gang of Teenage mutant metalheads
from Perth (that’s in Scotland don’t ya know). Converge/Dillinger Escape
Plan style intense extreme metal laced with relentless raw brutal colour.
Their reputation arrived here ahead of them (oh yes the word has been seeping
down) and these demos certainly back up that healthy Scottish reputation.
.Screaming low-end yelping vocals that could be just a little bit of an
easy option cop-out. Hey look, we’re being picky, others might not have
had enough of these yelping vocalists just yet and he is rather good at
it – there’s certainly personality enough to makes us go consult the lyric
sheet and wonder who punched the designated driver as we find out just
what Matt Evans is screaming about. Oh yes, impressive demo, 43% converged
and they do have some healthy musical light and shade. Actually when
the music is this good then the extreme vocal style becomes a positive.
Tight sharp construction, high-risk manoeuvres bursting with future possibilities
– www.allergonoise.co.uk
ALSO CHECK OUT
FAHRENHEIT
451 – The Catastrophe - Rousing politically charged anthemic punk rock
energy that tastes of semi-fine things like The Clash or New Model Army,
maybe a bit of a John Lydon fronting Midnight Oil vibe. They have a military-rock
feel - whatever the hell that means? Ah hell , you know what it means,
Combat Rock – come on, you know! What are you gonna do when your beds are
burning anyway? And whatever happened to that band Icehouse, I loved that
Great Southern Land song, hey look, I’ve got all distracted again now –
are this band from down under? They sound like it. They’re a three piece,
from Fahrenheit 451 (where the fun had just begun), I don’t know where
they’re from, I’ve lost the press release now, Nurse Bella, make more coffee
– Passionate, urgent, bit of a Manics Muse edge (not one of those dreadful
Manic wannabe second hand sloganeering bands that the Manics fans clutch
on to now that their beloved ones have gone to seed). I need coffee, I
think I like this demo, got a little distracted, didn’t fully hold my attention,
didn’t have me raving and drooling and running in to the street to hoist
up another burning flag of told you so defiance, but hey, I kind of liked
it... Coffee now please! www.f451.org.uk
3rd
BORN SUN – Duck and cover time people, sixteen track demo coming in direct
from Dundee. Old school raw-edged punky thrashing death metal with a Crowbar
edge to it. Heaven knows what they’re on about – Necro Horse Attack, Castrol
GTX, and Sannie Dappers are just three of their tittles – ah look, I like
their direct rawness, they’re not inspiring me enough to make me want to
go check out those lyrics too closely, could be extremely dodgy for all
I know... www.3rdborn.co.uk
SHORT
WARNING – This is a short warning about conforming melodic ‘punk’ pop.
Now this short warning is not going to include a rant about bands that
all sound the same and rule obeying and conforming and why are bands happy
with sounding exactly the same as 473 bands we already heard too many times
this week and for god sake how unpunk rock is all this conforming (apparently
Big Cheese love them, that should be enough of a short warning!). No, no
ranting about all that, we’ve warned you about all that before. Look, very
very very tuneful melodic punk pop done extremely well for people who never
leave home without a safety harness (and clean underwear in case of that
road accident) and I’m sure their families are very proud of their very
‘nice’ sound and they’re all hard workers who do lots for charity and never
swear in public and help old ladies across the road like good Scouts. Why
do bands all want to sound like exact copies of their damn awful (and clearly
very limited) record collections? Hey, if you like the sound of very melodic
blah blah blah then they are very good at it and this is for you and there’s
the link and where’s my cricket bat and two buffalo girls go around the
outside. This has been yet another short public warning from the Organ
Ear Defence League – do please ignore us and go check it out if it sounds
exciting to you (hey we could have just ignored it, if they were bad at
this thing they choose to do then we would have done, hey, there’s probably
an A&R person reading this and already off to sign them, that’s what
happened when we reviewed the Oasis demo back there, go ask Chums McGee).

OF THE WEEK
THE
KNIGHTS OF THE NEW CRUSADE - A Challenge To The Cowards of Christendom
(Alternative Tentacles) - Now what the devil is this? The sound of the
milk and honey that could be flowing for all? Do you really like your life
of danger and sin? Religion is big money? Surely not? Big religion has
been hijacked by bigger money? Big man get a hold will ya? Time for a new
Crusade, I did hear Bush call for a new crusade right? This is what he
meant wasn’t it? Jello is always there with his Alternative Tentacles organisation
to answer the call of America and the righteous. Praise be to all and spread
the new gospel and do/don’t listen to Marshall metaphor and that battle
for mind control. Propaganda and counter propaganda, three way switch and
what part of Thou Shall Not Kill don’t you understand? (It is a command
rather than just a suggestion right Mr Bush?). Praise be, for hell is nothing
to joke about and The Knights Of The New Crusade have a punk rock and roll
message for you sinners and you religious abusers who take it all like
the money changers and the vendors. Oh yes the vendors who need to be thrown
out of temple once more, those who depend on the good god-fearing Bush
voting Christian public for their record profit margins. Don’t turn to
the devil, he just brings you down in more misery. Repent, and the lord
opened the mouth of the ass and she said unto Balaam, What have I done
unto thee, that thou has smitten me three times? And Balaam said unto the
ass, Because thou has mocked me: I would there were a sword in mine hand....
The
AT website says “Meet the most controversial garage band to storm the music
scene in years! Combining a furious garage punk assault with an uncompromising
and literal devotion to the Holy Bible, the Knights of the New Crusade
are without a doubt the most divisive band in both the Christian music
and punk rock circles.”
What
kind of god fearing devious devilment is that damn Bat up to now?
Who are these Christians anyway? Are they or aren’t they? Taking what back
from the hypocrites? There’s all kinds of rumours coming out of the Bay
Area regarding who these people are... In God We Trust Inc. www.alternativetentacles.com
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK 2
CARTRIDGE
– Cases (Cartridge Music) - One of the most intriguingly interesting of
new London based bands out there right now (and as we keep on pointing
out, we are in a golden age if you’re prepared to go mine it for yourself
rather than waiting for the establishment media to tell you where it is).
A self released debut album and a fine collection of avant-pop treats that
don’t obviously fit anywhere (good). Easy breezy glowing Pan European jazz
pop (with post-rock flavourings) a sound that swings from deliciously flowing,
glowing, simple, almost lounge-lizard tinged, clever easy-listening, right
over to hard edged new-wave progressive pronk rock. A fine sound that bends
like Primus dancing with Bjork and gets all left-field art rock as it drags
you in. Oh yes, tango away as you do your laundry lullaby. Sunny day Beach
Boys all gone off-hinge... And now the tango has switched to the
Charleston. If it is art-rock then it’s Art Nouveau (and there aren’t many
in that swimming pool). There’s all these warm, slightly discordant piano
bits and Cartridge are just so so unlike anything else and we’re squinting
like a coward in a line (or a lion) and she sings so well and so does he.
They all flow so so well (however musically awkward they’re being). Even
when Cartridge are getting really hard-boiled and complex they’re still
so so easy to listen to (and enjoy). Right now (as I write) it’s just a
delicate voice and a quiet piano that explodes with graceful sea nymph
splendour that can’t be put in any box. Ah yes, and such fine detail as
well, a unique and recommended album. This is why we do this Organ thing.

THE
LOVE SUBSTITUTES – More Songs About Hangovers and Sailors (Heaven Hotel)
– Another one of those beautifully bizarre and always rewarding left-field
family of bands that float around the good ship Deus in such a creatively
obscure way (and slightly confusing if you’re not on top of it all – just
who is who and what is what and kiss my jazz with moondog junior? We can’t
keep track). Mauro Pawlowski is part of this four piece. Hey look, I haven’t
got the time, you go play detective and work out this Deus family thing,
we don’t need bad blood between us, that would be blood enough. Hey hey,
I’m trying to get your attention here, some where near/between/over/under
that mellow/clever European art rock thing and fine US alternative flavours
of a Pavement nature. I know that’s not enough, but hey, if you like Deus
(and how can you not?) this this is for you. Songs about sailors and hangovers,
songs about insomnia and childhood memories and Zen Buddhism and music
journalists and death, poetry, liars, love and hate, songs that taste of
Bert Jansch and Bongwater and Wire and Jethro Tull and Brian Eno and Butthole
Surfers and Camper Van Beethoven and Led Zeppelin playing sunny day folk
music while a beaver builds a damn and isn’t it so so easy to just stall
on the descriptions and make lazy lists instead while we waltz around the
floor plan? The joy of presents and spiders and tell me more, come on tell
me more. The Battle of Evermore in chocolate submarines and art-folk-rock
Led Zeppelin for Pavement fans – I like Belgium and the secret heart of
spider land and I really should tell you more, I’m reviewing this for you,
take it personal, it is, I like, I like, I like.... www.heavenhotel.be
THREE
DAY BENDA – Sounds Of The Suburbs (Positive Impact)
“What we got ‘ere then Charlie?” asked Sargent Jimmy Pursey of the Hersham
Punk Rock Police.
“Looks like another one of those pesky kid horned-up skankin’ ska punk
bands scratching around in our speakers like a pack of rice-eating mice
Sarge” replied PC Harper as he scratched at his faded green hair,
“what
‘as it all come to ‘ay Sarge, this punk rock malarky, back in my day bands
knew how to break rules and you didn’t have to call no punk rock police
to point out who was actually any bleedin’ good. I don’t know, seems like
these days our work is never done, what wiv all these bands and none of
them breaking any rules, don’t they know laws are for breaking Sarge?”
Hey look, the Benda sound like they can kick up a live storm, I’d consider
walking barefoot over glass to see ‘em (just as long as I had me shoes
and socks on and my path had been swept clean so I didn’t get any of those
damn shards in my boot soles). There’s a lot of angry huff ‘n puff
and demands for system change and hoisting of anti flags, and yes, the
signs are good here. They come from Portsmouth and they’ve got eleven primed
slices of energetic ska’d up punk for ya – hey now, if you like Big D And
The Less Than Mighty Mighty Capdown Kids Table Jessie James band then Three
Day Benda bring a few shades of their own to the party. They pack all that
ska punk energy with a need to be slightly different and it is like dancing
barefoot and angry on broken glass (never do it without your boots on,
boots cost money). Hey we like it and we like them and we like their energy
and their ethos and their relentless touring and.... All is good good good,
their musical pollution is good and you shouldn’t ignore, don’t let them
get lost in the over-crowded ska punk rule-obeying playground now, they
stand out from that crowd and they sound like they want to break a few
of the rules. No need for no punk rock police here then..
“sweet
as sarge, we’re not needed today.. out of here for us. Let’s go nick those
damn boy band rejects Fightstar and take them out back for a good old 79
style punk rock police kicking” –
“Your an angel with a dirty face Charlie, come on, come on, hurry up, we’re
going down the pub... Hang on though, before we go, hang on a bleedin’
minute, what do we ‘av here? Not a hint of a website address or any form
of contact to be found on their CD sleeve (besides their distributor Plastichead.com)
– I think you lose three DIY points from your punk rock licence for that
one Charlie don’t yer?”
“Too right Sarge, bleedin’ whippersnappers will never reach people if they
don’t tell anyone how to reach ‘em. It’s yer basics in’it, addresses on
your sleeves an’ all that stuff. I mean, back in my day it was all unreadable
flyers and waiting six months for new copies of Sniffin Glue and such,
now these young monkeys have that interweb fing and they can’t even be
bovered to tell anyone, let’s go nick ‘em! Sarge, it’s lazy fings like
this that let bleeders like Good Charlotte in”
BANG!
BANG! – Decked Out (Morphius) – They come from Chicago, they call it Sex
Rock (can you do that when you’re a band named after a B.A Robinson song?).
Sounds like sucking lollipops on pogo sticks – oh naughty lyrics. Infectious
and jerky and girl-singer pop rock Devo bounce and a nervous tick and oh
Mickey you’re so fine, your so fine you’ve blown my mind and my blood runs
cold, my angel is a centrefold and there goes more bounce and spring and
pop pop pop will eat itself and Hot Hot Heat Yeah Yeah Yeah and here comes
the moneyshot and some Gun Club and bounce bounce with an arty Chigaco/Devo
edge - whip it, whip it real good (full stop here now please). www.morphius.com
DECIMATE
– 11 Rounds (Copro) – UK Hardcore with a brutal metal edge, first full
album (on the heels of that mini album on Blackfish and various other bits
and pieces). The highly respected crew have more than paid their dues and
earned their scene stripes. Eleven solid hardcore metal slices that do
just what you need them to do – no messing, no frills, they’ve been delivering
since their early demo days (that seem like so long ago now), they’ve delivered
again - recommended, what more do you need from us? www.decimateuk.com
MEASELS
MUMPS RUBELLA – Fantastic Success (Doubling Cube) – NYC four piece with
a haze of Gang Of Four flavoured US alt rock for your ears. Much loved
by Ian Mackaye (who put out their first single), they get a bit space rock
here and there – no bad thing (keeps them from turning in to Franz) and
those drums go to places of their own.... www.doublingcube.com

DECORATION – Candidate (SL

Present and all very positive and let them do it for themselves thank you
