PAPER VERSION OF ORGAN - HOW TO GET YOURS
ORGAN #162 > JUNE 8th 2006 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon
a great horned owl, a leaf nose snake, a banded gecko, a spiny lizard
Shall we write an intro now? Shall we? Well shall we? Would you notice if we put one up from last week? Last year? The last century? Would yer? Well would yer? We’re busy with the television Organ this week you know, that and telling you about this and that while we fight off the average and deal with the apathy and there only 28 hours in the day and did you catch up with George Tabb yet? Shall we have an intro this time? These things have to brew and stew and they can easily boil over in to a mess and the beans nearly got spilt last time. Do we tend to repeat ourselves when under stress? We saw two speckled rattlesnakes, a great horned owl, a leaf nose snake, a banded gecko, a spiny lizard, two other kinds of lizards, I think I saw a ringtailed cat, a California tree frog, three kinds of ground squirrels, kangaroo rats, about twenty plant species I can now name, night hawks, lots of bats... Some sort of super massive black hole. We have standards you know, we ain’t one of them there let any damn wannabee buzz along and write about their mates in a bands so said band can quote it on a flyer – when we say it’s good you know it is, no one is drowning in anything here and the channel light vessel is falling slowly, gales expected, ten miles one thousand and nine, now rising and anger is an energy – go help out George Tabb – yes I am talking to you.
GENE SERENE - "the next queen of perverted electronic pop" (barbelith.com)X
THIS IS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME....
WHY WHY WHY DID YOU? Just why did you? what do you want? who are you?

Organ zine cover star MC LARS is back in UK from July 22nd and the Truck Fest, Oxford (sold out already though so...) Then it’s July 23 at the Double Top Northampton, 24th Barfly Birmingham, July 25th Barfly, Liverpool, July 26th The Croft, Bristol then July 27th University, Cardiff, July 28th Cellar Bar 8 Cambridge, July 29th Opera House, Bournemouth, July 31st Rip Curl Board Masters, Newquay.

THINGS TO GET EXCITED ABOUT
ORGAN TV will be back for more starting Mid summer 2006. ORGAN TV returns for a year long series that will be available via SKY Channel 173 all over the UK (and a good portion of Europe) from 10.30pm 12th JULY onwards.....

How? What? Where? ORGAN TV enjoyed a short run and caused a big stir on Sky back in 2003 – we just went out and did what people said couldn’t be done, we stuck our necks out (again) and proved it can be done and that Music TV can actually be exciting.  And now we’ve been invited back for more.

Now you know our musical policy, you know what we do and what we like and what we’re about – you know what to expect on ORGAN TV, you know you can expect the unexpected (this may be on Sky but hey, totally on our terms). It can be done and it’s happening right now - Music TV from us.

Music TV with attitude. Cutting edge music, exciting videos, alternatives. Want to get your material on? We want to see what you’ve got – it has to be broadcast quality, it can be DIY, you CAN make exciting videos on a very very small budget. Get your DVDs (video tapes if you must) in to us and we promise to have a look. We want exciting videos, we want video that hold us right through, we want different videos. We don’t want the same old crap they show on the other channels, we don’t want all those safe predictable videos they already show everywhere else, the ones that have you hitting the remote half way through – time to shake things up a little more.

BANDS - GET YOUR VIDEOS IN

Video makers, film makers, animators, anybody doing anything interesting – we want eye candy, we want your creativity, we want your one minute documentaries, your 20 second bursts (or five minute bursts) of animation we want all kinds of bites running between the band videos – send in your creativity or point us to places like My Space or You Tube.   The only rules we have are our rules (and a few of those broadcast rules, oh and the no HARD-Fi rule but hey you knew that...). We make no promises to anyone other than to check out everything and chase you if we want to use what you have...    What are we lining up? HELLA? DEERHOOF? LITTLE TROPHY? COLT? LIARS? 65DAYSOFSTATIC? BATTLES?  CARDIACS? MASTODON? HIGH ON FIRE? SIDEARM? YIP-YIP? NEXT LIFE? PRISCILLAS? GENE SERENE? AMON TOBIN? JAGA JAZZIST? MC LARS? HUMAN TOYS? SPIT LIKE THIS? NONE MORE BLACK and who knows what....

George Tabb is the punk guy we've all either been reading about or have read in Maximum Rock'n'Roll for a couple of decades, the guy who's been in several well known punk bands again for a couple of decades. Well, everything he's saying on (his) page about his health problems are real! NYC Firefighters and cops and others have started dropping dead this past year from those months of breathing in toxic dust after 9-11. A lot of people who were directly exposed to that air are in bad shape. George was living right there AND helping out! Tabb has given a lot of punk and underground people a lot of pleasure and a lotta laughs and alotta food for thought over the decades with his writings and his bands and I'd like to think that we, as a do it yourself kind of community, can and would give back now that he needs help. - Monica Nelson from Whirlwind Coalition

What is Monica on about?

For me it's as simple as this....  Category: Music

- a guy who has given a lot to alternative DIY underground culture that I get a lot out of, needs some help. It's as simple as that - it's not about politics, it's just a guy from our worldwide DIY community family needs our help  - one of our own needs some help - it's that simple - read
the blogs, hit the links.... AND WE REALLY DON'T SEE WHY THIS SITUATION ISN'T BEING PUBLICISED ON EVERY WEBSITE OF EVERY BAND, ZINE AND LABEL OUT THERE  (Sean O)

HELP GEORGE TABB

DEMO TIME
Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood

DEMO OF THE WEEK
BLACK JACKSON – dangerously infectious catchy urgent sprightly indie spiky guitar pop songs that are already lodged in our brains so much so that we sing of fame and reality and a whole lot of people being underpaid as we walk along corridors. As Seen On TV is a song that could take over the daytime airwaves in as much of an annoying way as those Arctic Hard Monkey Fi Chiefs and we’d be sick of it in a damn damn damn no more Kaisers or there will be that predicted riot. Black Jackson are closer to those Kaiser Chiefs than anything else, confident Northern frontman – Manchester rather than Leeds – oh yes, infectiously dangerous indie pop to sing at the back of the bus – Three tracks, and they look like they have a lot of energy live if this video is anything to go by, little side excersionns in those songs tooooo – www.myspace.com/blackjackson

'NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK……
Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million albums, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - only five albums, five is enough... five five five... OK, we're very very selective, when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood

ALBUM OF THE WEEK
FRESHKILLS – Creeps And Lovers (Arclight) – Like falling upstairs and not spilling a thing., a rather fine New York thing that’s all very current and they sound like they may have a plot to blow up the Effel Tower along with that NY bite and that Fugazi edge to their Franz new wave. We could talk of angular new wave and circular buzz saws and, yes, if Franz were to be a dark evil band that you could love rather than the irritation that you just want to swat. The Departure for frantic wired up Fall fans, TV on The Radio for Girls Against Boys fans, hey now they sound like Talking Heads beating the crap out of Liars - you only get to that when you really let it unfold though. Oh yes, it would be an easy thing to mistakenly dismiss them as just another post Strokes Television flavoured NY band. Hell, they’re going to get sick of people saying they sound like this meets that – hey, they sound like Drive Like Jehu for Wires fans blah blah blah – they have an edge. They’re good, like falling upstairs and not spilling a thing. www.myspace.com/freshkills

GRAM RABBIT – Cultivation (Stinky) - Now what do we have here? A cult of white rabbits who’ve been feeding their heads out in Joshua Tree? A hedonistic cult flying around in their jefferson airplanes with smashing pumpkins for their surrealistic pillows. Magic potions and sharing the Californian desert with the egg steeling coachwhips. “with this album we want to spread the energy of the desert and plant the seeds of truth” (their last album was called Music To Start A Cult To). We’re talking Californian eccentricity and Zappa and Beefheart and Jefferson Airplane – she does sound rather like Grace Slick in a very now kind of way – no this isn’t hippy nonsense, it’s perfectly reasonable to be part of a cult dancing around the Californian desert in giant white rabbit suits. It’s a lush modern American pop sound that could only come from where it does - it’s as a much La Tigre as Zappa, Electralane as Beefheart – so what if their audience all wear shinny white rabbit ears? More tales from the desert, feed your head, love those coachwhips. www.gramrabbit.com

BLUENECK – Scars Of The Mid West (Don’t Touch)  isolated moodiness from the rather mysterious reclusive four-piece from Somerset. Mostly a rather euphoric cleansing refreshing extremely dynamic very big instrumental thing (and there are vocals now and again) Very warm soundscapes and ambient guitar atmospheres, slightly dark, sparse piano, analogue synths, soaring great big guitars for appreciators of Godspeed Y.B.E, Sigur Ros and Mogwai, don’t go thinking they’re just another post-rock band though, they have their own impressive way of doing it. www.blueneck.com

THE FEVER – In The City Of Sleep (Kemado) – It’s a kind of NYC junkyard thing, a (not quite) fellini-esque circus where a (not quite) David Lynch lurks underneath the lullabies of lost innocence (only not quite as good as that make it’s all sound). I think I read somewhere that they were the NY Franz, they’re nowhere near that bad! I kind of like them, oh I don’t know, maybe. There’s some nice detail in there. www.feveronline.com

THE HOLLOW EARTH THEORY – Hanging The Followers – Self released five track mini album from the soothing/bludgeoning Shrewsbury metal crew. Exploring the same areas as bands like I-Def-I in that Killswitch Engaged/Hatebreed kind of way. They do it well, needs a little X factor to go with the rather professional sound, worth investigating. They make great cakes in Shrewsbury you know, the butter buns from Market Drayton are better though – www.myspace.com/thehollowearththeory

A SLIGHT LAPSUS LAPSE - Oh, we’ve been corrected (and not by the first minister of Scotland either) - an awful Lapsus lapse and a mistake and all kinds of wrongness was made with the information that came along with the sixth track from the Organ OTHER ROCK SHOW with Marina Organ on Resonance 104.4FM (London) on Sunday May 14th 2006 (10.30pm) – here’s what we said:  6: LAPSUS LINGUAE - Sub City (Live) LAPSUS LINGUAE - This (unannounced!) downloaded Lapsus Linguae track begins with a dialogue about the Queen Mother eating a corgi, possibly recorded at their jaw-dropping Bull & Gate gig a couple of months back. www.lapsuslinguae.co.uk for more info or download it while is still up on their page at http://www.myspace.com/lapsuslinguae

AND HERE ARE THE FACTS – “Actually it was recorded at Subcity Radio’s studios at  Glasgow University as part of the weekly Subcity Sessions show. You can listen to the full show again, including the 20 min Lapsus set on the Subcity website”. http://www.subcity.org/

And talking of Resonance fm, the fine people behind the best radio station in the world are that dark underworld organisation called the LMC. Who are they? What does LMC mean? We’ll go see, the new London Musicians Collective website is now up and running and you can take a look @ http://www.l-m-c.org.uk/index.html

And talking of fine radio, DRINKING FROM PUDDLES airs on KBOO-FM in Portland, OR. Wed. nights 9-11PM US Pacific Time. Stream at www.KBOO.fm. You can find out more at http://www.myspace.com/drinkingfrompuddles

“So, we (Zac and Rachel) are Macaroni Zine, and we are looking for people to write or make art for our zine. Below is the description. The theme for this issue (the first issue) is "moving" or "movement." If you are interested, please email us”.

SINGLES
SINGLE OF THE WEEK

STASI – Mixed Inglish (Riot Club) - A set of robustly delicate and rather brave songs/pieces/ epic outbursts that have all the time in the world to smoulder in their own moody way. Stasi are not going to be able to get away from the very obvious Radiohead comparisons so let’s get them out of the way now. Actually they should take the comparisons as compliments, indeed if this was to be a new release from Radiohead then we’d all be more than happy. Gloriously brave and once you let it seep in then Stasi are clearly something rather special (it does take a little time, stick around and make the effort). Actually the lead track Mixed Inglish is a little under stated and those Muse indie rock angles won’t really grab you fully until the slowing moving second track roller-coaster ride that is the glorious eight minutes of Riding The Biaxel has been fully explored - classically bombastic and very Muse/Radiohead flavoured, Riding The Biaxel needs all of those dramatic eight minutes to unwind. Travel The Light is a little more left field (no bad thing) with those shafts of sunlight through the cracks. And once you have exlored the whole thing the lead track works and the whole thing demands more more more and all our viriol is happy - my vitriol, your vitriol -  www.thestasi.co.uk

ALSO CHECK OUT
THE RACONTEURS – Hands – Jack White and his other band, not the most exciting track from the rather fine album, a polite 70’s sounding Zeppelin pop rock thing. Good, but hey, there’s far better things to be found on the album.

AVOID
THE ORGAN – Memorize The City (Too Pure) - Ha! Last month they were moaning about our name (again!) and telling us we had to change it, they keep sending their damn music in though – they could have at least been good with a name like that, if they're going to be this boring and conforming and obvious then they really should be called The Fly or something....
