MARK E. SMITH IS COMING TO TOWN.....
Standing on the roof top waiting ‘till the bomb drops on the words of the prophets that were written on the studio wall and Mark E. Smith is coming to town, wearing a crown and a frown I don’t feel pain won’t you hit me again. We’ve already been, we’ve already seen and it turns out the grass wasn’t greener on the other side at all – oh yes it was (based on a survey of 156 BT customers). Oh sweet lungs please don’t fail me now, why has this new Dashboard Confessional CD just turned up in the shiny morning post? Why? Why? Why? And ex members of Babyshambles) sending us messages via My Space (coz that’s the way the ‘kids’ do it right) asking us to review them – yeah right, funny one that  “We are compelled to do what we are forbidden to, I won’t sleep if you won’t sleep” sings the clued-in man from Dashboard (see, we do listen to all this stuff, we do give it all a chance), hand me the big red CD crusher, here’s another that clearly needs putting out of that misery the thing clearly is in with those rooftops and invitations and secret places. If you could take all the love without giving any back would you do it? Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah.....  yeah yeah yeah, more idiot troubled boys and a little destruction.

Whoooooooo, you didn’t like our choice of Lost Prophets as single of the week last time around did you? Tough, we’ve liked them since their Lozt Prophetz demo days and they just get better end better –  don’t mistake us for some kind of elitist set of indie small is best snobs, a band can be big and still be good, it doesn’t happen very often and it just so happens that most of the time small is best because for some strange reason the best usually get ignored while the watered down and compromised gets hyped. One on the case e.mailer told us he was never going to read Organ again if Lostprophets are going to get coverage – hey, we just about good music and eating nothing but purple food for three days of the week to clean out your system... so we didn’t put an issue up last week, what you foing ot do? Call your lawyer? The World Cup is on, We’re making magazines and TV shows and a lot of mess and arrhhhhggggggggggggg....

THIS WEEK WE START WITH SOMETING A LITTLE TOO SERIOUS AND FAR TOO REAL THOUGH. Our thoughts are with Billy

Message posted by Billy’s Brother:

Ok. Things are no longer positive.  Today Billy underwent a 5 hour operation, a piece of his skull was removed to relieve pressure on his brain, this was done successfully. However his brain is now very inflamed, this inflammation has spread to the rest of his body.

The next 48 hours are crucial, there are three possibilities. The first is that the inflammation causes him to pass away in the next 48 hours, the second is that he makes it through, in which case he will be in a coma for a considerable time, he may wake up and no longer function properly, he may however also wake up and be ok.

Bill has damage to his brain, the next 48 hours are crucial. Things are touch and go. Essentially Billy could pass away. The doctors say the brain is so complicated that they cannot tell us how likely any of the possibilities are, we just have to wait and see.

Please try to think positively for bill, however irrationally this may sound I cant see this being the end, its just not bill. We can only hope and pray. We will keep you updated, and please, respectfully do not come to visit the hospital.

Thank you again for all your messages of support, Im sorry I havent responded to many. Your kindness is touching at this trying time. Stan xx

ALBUM OF THE WEEK

JOHNNY CASH – American V: A Hundred Highways (American Recordings) - Four tracks in and there’s a version of Gordon Lightfoot’s If You Could Read My mind, it’s every bit as time-stopping and tear-building as Hurt was (and still is). There’s a lot of emotion here of course and we were all expecting this last album to be something very special – and of course it is, how could it not be? The last recordings the great man made, the songs he chose for what he knew would be his very last album – including the last song he ever wrote “Like The 309” – and his grasps for breath (everybody take a look, se I’m doing fine, put me in my box on the 3.09). Just brave and sparse brutally honest and full of extra heart-wrenching poignancy because it’s all so simple and strong and full of faith and frankness and you know exactly what he means when he sings about going home on the evening train. It’s just all so at ease and peaceful and simple and right and just a beautiful thing to leave. Uplifting and full of hope and reflection and hints of regret and not quite knowing. A content and very much at ease reflective mellow relaxed beautiful album. His new version of Love’s Been Good To Me is so uplifting and pure, the whole thing is. Rick Rubin deserves so much credit for the production and just for getting the very very best out Johnny Cash with these final albums – the finest things he ever did. A flower not faded or falling apart – the whole thing is just so warm and sad and happy and mesmerising and time-stopping and in the end, as he points out, we all get cut down, the rambler, the gambler, the long tongue liar. And then there’s the last of the twelve songs – I’m Free From The Chain Gang Now -  whoooooooooo, no words needed, just make sure you pick the right time and space to listen to it for the first time.... a final album as special as you knew it was going to be. www.johnnycash.com

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 2

THE WEEGS – The Million Sounds Of Black (Hungry Eye) – Ah yes, you just know this is going to be so right from the off. These Weegs have us won over in the first delicious half minute, those new wave squelching keyboards, those bouncy springy dirty filthy Devo synths... Now let’s get this bit in early before we start with the ridiculous Organ type frothing and drooling that you already know is on the way. The Weegs are very Devo, very very Devo, very very very Devo. No mere set of clones though, if they were then it wouldn’t be anything to really shout about and indeed we wouldn’t be doing any goddamn fish swirling and purple and sky blue shouting that’s on the way right now. Yes indeed, it’s 4.30pm and time to shout about The Weegs. This is highest grade distorto-skronk, and wholesome no-wave bouncy pronk of the finest orer. Awkwardly fluid and easy on the ear and very much for disciples of those beautiful Cardiacs and Pere Ubo and the finest Californian No Wave and 21st Century crypto-sarcastic Residents style squonk and oh yes yes yes, shout shout shout shout! Ladies and gentlemen we have a live one here! Those bizarre honking squelching synth lines, the frantic rushes (in cheesecake trucks) and the throbbing hypnoticness of it all sucking you in like moths to a washing machine. Beautifully frantic and art-damaged and yes maybe a Birthday Party undertone or two in the scratchy outbursts and the darkness beyond and the proper angular bits (not your slight degrees in kink, proper angular) and my wars have heard the glory and squelch squelch squelchy squelchy transmission futile. Ah yes, they sound a little like Servotron, they sound a little like everything we love and there is no room for you at the top of the stairs, show yourself the door, go get your own. They’re from San Francisco (who isn’t these days?) and their fizz is filthy and pulsing and so pleasingly disjointed in such a fluid easy way – this is how it should be. Hey look, a band who sound like all the bands we just mentioned and laced with their own flavours as well, what yer waiting for? www.realgone.org/weegs or www.hungryeyerecords.com

ALSO CHECK OUT
RIPCORD – Live At Parkhof Alkmaar (Boss Tuneage) – The late 80’s UK hardcore minor/semi major/quite big/legendary monster legends recorded and captured in a raw warts’n all naked live state back when they were at the height of their musical powers. Blasting and roaring their way through some seventeen songs in just twenty minutes. Well we say songs, this is more like seventeen relentless rounds with a violent middleweight who has no time to stop for anything like breath or any kind of hint of even the most subtle of mood changes. Hey, this is Ripcord, who wants mood changes? Who wants light and shade? Blastin’ raw old school proper hardcore pounding and pummelling like they don’t do anymore (don’t tell anyone, but I got a little bored with it half way through, it does get a little one dimensional after the first nine or so rounds) – www.bosstuneage.com

LUXURY CAR – Annie’s Well (Biphonic) - Luxury Car are an electronic keyboard pop duo, the press release is eager to tell us they don’t sound anything like the 80’s or indeed anything like those Pet Shop Boys - they do though, in the most positive of  ways – and anyway, I have control of this review and those Pet Shop Boys are one of my favourite bands and Luxury Car are good good good. Luxury Car are nothing like Pet Shop Boys, they have all best bits of Pet Shop Boys, none of the kitsch and thankfully none of the Erasure side so don’t be worrying about the possibility of dreadful Goldfrapp alarms going off. Luxury Car are not retro or industrial or camp of searching for Berlin in 1977 (so they tell us). Luxury Car are not minimalists or goths, they are not cold, they are not stark – they tell us all this and more. Luxury Car don’t tell us that they are warm and lush and that they make the finest of warm lush wholesome (slightly dark) pop with minor explosions and a fire inside. Pop made just like those Pet Shop Boys (and Kraftwerk and Joy Division) and like none of them – Luxury Car are from Perth, Scotland and this is a rather fine album (with one or two really wonderful moments). www.idriveluxurycars.co.uk  or www.biphonic.co.uk

CAPSULET – The World Is A Tragic World, But There Is Grace All Around Us, So, Attend To The Grace (Motivesounds) – Long long passages of minimal instrumental post-rock, yes indeed, even longer than that preposterously silly album tittle. Hang on there’s some lyrics kicking in just as I was thinking about a cup of tea or walking the dog we don’t have or something like that. Post rock of a YouthMovie Explosions in the Sky Soundtrack Slint kind of nature and oh I don’t know.  Needs a little more substance and genuine invention to pull off being this pretentious and I’m a little bored three quarters of the way through the ten minutes that take up the fourth track. A little like Mogwai in that they make all the right moves without ever grabbing hold of anything interesting...  www.motivesounds.com

BUSH GIRL ATTENDS RADIOHEAD CONCERT
One of George W Bush's daughters, it's not clear which one, attended a Radiohead gig in New York recently, according to a post by Thom Yorke on the band's official website. Which is interesting, given Radiohead's obvious distaste for the US president.

Here's what he said. All spelling and grammatical errors are his, and nothing to do with me. The messanger decided not to care about Thom Yorke's abuse of the English language. “I have become too worn down by his blatant disregard for apostrophes”.

Yorke: "this'll make you laugh. i was told yesterday that one of the daughters of the president came to NY show 2. we were playing The Tourist at the end of the show.. and yes we did wander what the shuffling manhandling fighting was in the distance of the audience. turns out it was her 6 bodyguards clearing the way for the first daughters exit. and some pour soul objected at being manhandled by the secret service. i think i would have to. infact if i had known all this my objections would have been more forthright and extensive...if you know what i mean. which is perhaps why our lot chose not to tell me who was in the building before we went on. probably a good idea.

YEAH YEAH YEAH.... GIVE US A MOMENT,
SINGLES
SINGLE OF THE WEEK
SHRAG – Pregnancy Scene / Mark E Smith (WWAIWYA) – Ah yes, debut single from the Brighton band, climbing up your inside and sucking on your walls and getting all shouty (but not too shouty), couldn’t they have waited until we’d come out and woken up properly? It’s only 10.30am and now they’re telling me Mark E.Smith is coming to town (and wearing a frown) and all animated and wearing a crown (along with that frown). OK, lazy description time (come on, we already told you it’s only 10.30, I haven’t got my reviewing head on yet and I need coffee! Make me coffee now please). Shrag are all spiky and lo-fi and slightly shouty in a not too shouty way (yeah, I know we said that already) and she and he and they sing together and it’s very very infectious and damn them, I’m going to be sing about Mark E.Smith coming to town all day now! Damn, damn, damn, I am! I was right! I just went to put the kettle on and I’m singing it after just one play, play it again play it again, never mind the coffee. And I don’t reek of a museum at night do I? Mark E.Smith is coming to town, which town? Must be Brighton? Shrag are from Brighton. I’ve got no milk! I bet that happens a lot to Mark E.Smith (would he have milk in his coffee? Would he bother with coffee?), Shraq sound like they would never run out of milk. Shraq sound like they could save the world without ever wearing a frown (and they would always have plenty of milk just in case what’s-his-name came to town. And they’d have a crown). Shrag fizz and they buzz and they bounce and they clearly have the ability to make everyone smile and maybe Mark E.Smith knows where the Lost Dog is (but then that’s another thing for another time and we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves). Three girls, two boys and loads of energy. Shraq make spunky pointy indie pop with just the right attitude, shouty fizzy pop that tastes of all the best moments of all those Bis, Disco Pistol, I’m being Good types types - argghhhhh, it's too damn infectious like an animated boy on the shelf.  Limited to just 300 7” singles and I think most of them are in the Rough Trade record shop... www.wiawya.com or www.myspace.com/shraq
