#166 > JULY 13th 2006 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon |
|
| DID
YOU SEE US? WE WERE THERE STANDING THERE WITH OUR ARMS IN THE AIR |
You’re
the cold iron hand that claps the party of clowns outside and I guess you’re
wanting us to find time to put another weekly on-line Organ up here as
well as everything else we’re trying to get in this week? This week’s Organ
TV show just finished, Did you like The Assdroids? OK, We’ve got a spare
minute or two somewhere in out twenty seven hour day and let no one say
that once more it blighted, even in this land of traffic lights. We love
the monster, where disgust meets the deliciously perverse (in Ballardian
high-rises crashing imaginations in Albion). All is right when the bells
on Sunday ring before Sailing By, this week a round of eight from St Dunstan’s.
Just got home via the bendy eighteen from the Resonance FM studio,
and this week’s Other Rock Show, in time for the equally heart-warming
reassurance of Sunday night Radio Four, the two finest stations, it’s good
to see that Dirt namedropped the BBC, I’d hate it to just be the others.
We had to fight our way through the hoards of celebrating Italians clogging
up
central London, seems like everyone who ever ate pasta had suddenly found
some Italian blood and clambered on that rich tomato sauce drenched bandwagon
- it was a depressing end to a poor tournament, a sad final stoop to the
double Zd’s career. Meanwhile Ordinary Dave From Eton is down with the
kids in the hoodies, how many bandwagons can Dave jump on? I bet ordinary
Dave the football fan has found a slice of Italian pasta in his un-european
blood. ID cards are falling apart though, jump on that one Ordinary Dave,
we’d like you for that one. And now there’s fires in the Morongo Valley
taking up our mind and a lot more for the Californian branch of the Organ
team.
Will you keep on the track,
I know that you are, you’re the cold iron hand that claps the party of
clowns outside, send the cage through the post, please please baby lemonade.
I hope Syd found some happiness... |

and the art of good video making... Same musical policy as we've
always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts, as long as
the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy eye/earboiling
mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post man pat, hardcore,
indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity for the open
minded
(and if you think your video
should be on then shout in our direction)
Music TV done ORGAN style

DEMO TIME |
| Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
TThere
is no demo of the week this week? Why? Because there isn’t one that’s why.
Take it up with your local MP, take it up with yuor local bands – we demand
better demos and we only have a demo of the week when there’s something
worthy of the honour, we are very very picky and this week there is no
demo of the week.

ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
VIKING
MOSES – Crosses (Poptones) – Oh I wish I didn’t have to do this, the last
thing I really need to do right now is to have to dare think about what
might come or a need to run or question ending what has begun or to try
and write words here (before the rise of the sun). I’d rather just lie
on my back and let it move the whole world and leave you to hear it from
someone else – this is such a beautiful, strong powerful simple glorious
soothing calming album and the last thing I need to have to do is to have
to put it in to words.
Such a strong delicate fragile confident thing. I’ve had Crosses for about
a month now, I’ve played it pretty much every day, gentle fingers pressed,
another whole world window (not staring back this time). It’s been on repeat
for hours and hours today and I still have no idea how to tell you about
it, and I’m nowhere near tired of it (and I don’t think I ever will be
tired of it). Truth is, I’d rather just cop out and look, it’s late, the
sun will be up soon, I don’t have enough hours in the day as it is, I’m
tired, we’ve been playing tracks on the radio for you, we chased the video
down for the TV show last week, we have in on again this week. I could
sing about fishes and honey bees and waltzing on the world and night hours
heading for the coming day and watching as the boats move along if you
really wanted, do I really have to write about it all as well?
Break my pride and all its forms, push away all doubt and fear and let
Viking Moses install in their place the beauties of faith and comfort.
And those simple piano bits when she’s home and I’m delighted. Viking Moses
aka Brendon Massei makes cleaver simple minimal freak-folk (I really didn’t
want to call it freak-folk, we’re dancing around architecture again) Americana
gospel (and Michael row that boat ashore) with quiet piano notes that celebrate
the silence between the sounds almost as much as the strong-quite sounds
themselves – delicate acoustic guitars and fragile atmospheres and coats
of many colours sewn together by hand - so full of stories. Music and sounds
and songs and lines to totally abandon yourself in. We’ve heard talk of
white noise and free jazz when he’s live, and yes you can hear all that
in the quiet delicate silence and the smiles waiting until you come home,
no noise here though, this is all very very peaceful and all so very easy.
A childhood in the Ozarks, an upbringing in Las Vegas with Leonard Cohen
and Kurt Cobain and Dolly Parton and banjos and a stint with Devendra Banhart’s
band and garlands of flowers and Golden Apples of The Sun. Crosses is stripped
down beauty and less is far far more. Crosses is almost primitive, Crosses
is so so full and he couldn’t get any more in there even if he wanted to
– the silence is packed and bursting. Every bit of silence and scratchy
guitar and booming whispered word is packed with so so much hope and love
and smiles and things so wholesome and beautiful and blessed to be here
on this floor and no, I have no idea how to tell you why I like this album
so much. An unrighteous wait for a beat of a heart and I knew right from
the start.
Hey look, forget all that, what I meant to day was - simple delicate uplifting
Americana and (freak) folk for Elliott Smith, Brian Jonestown Massacre,
Beck, Devendra Banhart fans, go enjoy, it's special. Interact with Viking
Moses here - www.myspace.com/vikingmosescrosses

EXIT TEN – This World, They’ll
Drown (Deep Burn) – Now you see, there’s nothing wrong with metalcore when
it’s done with a added slice of imagination and a bag full of intelligent
passion. For once we have a band who aren’t style over substance, a little
bit more than just another bag load of underachieving English fashion parade
metalcore poseurs here. Reading’s Exit Ten aren’t massively different,
it doesn’t matter though, for they have, with this latest release, a well
of class. Now someone today tried to tell me they had a lot of Muse in
there and I can see why, but no, Muse are about pomp. Muse are the indie
Queen, Exit Ten are making intelligent for people who like a little substance
with their intensity. Think Mastadon, Earthtone 9 style intelligence (ok,
yes, with a hint or two of Muse), melodic adventurous complex anthemic
almost progressive metalcore - rather recommended – www.exit-ten.co.uk
DIRTY RIG – Rock Did It (Escapi)
- Kory Clark from the once excellent Warrior Soul back and not quite so
angry or political now as he was back then and oh well...... Kind of a
shame because those first two Warrior Soul albums were classics. There
are hints of his magic here and this is still good, but but bit... If you
missed out on Warrior Soul then think a far better Amen with a slice or
two of sarcastic wired up Killing Joke – Casey Chaos with even more attitude
and far better music (yes, that good). There’s hints of that much missed
Warrior Soul edge here with Dirty Rig and it is still very much Kory Clark
but this is far more early Aerosmith, raw Motley Crue or Guns ‘N Roses
(dumb) punk(ish) metal – good if feel the urge for slice or two of party
pizza and throwaway songs about guns, porno stars and who know what (guess
we’re in a dead century?). It’s OK if you find yourself in the right state
of mind, but hey, Kory Clark set far higher standards back there at the
start of the 90’s. www.dirtyrig.com
VOIVOD – Katorz (The End)
– Ah, more legends from the last century. There’s no doubting the massive
influence the mighty Voivod have had on the more creative ground breaking
progressive end of (extreme) thinking person’s metal, there’s no doubting
their brilliance and their hand in shaping things back there. This is their
14th album (has it really been that many?) and the last before the tragic
loss of founder member and highly respected guitarist Piggy. Piggy died
of colon cancer last year and these were the guitar parts he left behind
(along with instructions on how the songs should be constructed)
Now this is better than the last album and those Voivod chords and fingerprints
are there, that angular chord that is Voivod’s very own. Still tastes
of Voivod, this is no Nothingface or Dimension Hatross or Outer Limits
though, nowhere near we’re disappointed to say – if you really want the
Piggy magic then it’s back there forever etched on those glorious albums.
And what a nice guy he was as well, we we’re involved in a gig with them
once, over at the George Robey (or was it called the Powerhaus by then?)
He wanted to talk about Van Der Graaf Generator for hours and hours – top
man, top band, one of the very best and we really wanted to tell you there
was one more slice of the magic here, alas there are only hints of it.

PATCHWORK
GRACE – Zebra (Trash pit) - Off hinge Daisy Chainsaw/Queen Adreena types
with an extra off-hinge singing girl (called Tori Trash) who doesn’t
want to be a zebra – why? Why would you not want to be a zebra? I want
to know! Off-hinge trash rock, Wednesday 13 and trash queen flash bombs
and Those stripeeeeeey horses are never black and white and I love this
second track even more than the Zebra thing. yeah I know it’s wrong. I
love it, buying shit with your expensive card, smile, lovely – be your
own pet, oh yes, never mind the zebra, now you know where you’re gonna
go – trailer trash clearly -.lovely, b-side of the month, lovely lovely
– do you think they’ll notice that bad language if we play it on the radio?
My policy is to never mention it and hope the complaining types and the
radio police aren’t paying attention. Four minutes long - they probably
didn’t need that last minute, the first three explosive minutes rule in
a throw away drunken screaming girl jumping all over your toes kind of
way... Actually no, hang on, I like the Zebra song better now, and the
Queen Chainsaw thing was just damn lazy of me, it gives you a vague idea
though, nothing more – they’re from Nottingham, they’re brilliant, you’ve
got me on a leash a damn damn leash.... Zebra crossing and YEAH!

SENNEN
– Let You Down (Hungry Audio) – Whirling creamy dreamy indie pop (anyone
remember Whipped Cream and their orgasmic sound?) Lush, expansive, the
new wave of shoe gazing part 72. Cascading, euphoric, dynamic, like a slowdive
ride in a catherine wheel. Great big Explosions in The Sky and that euphoria
that 65 Days of Static touch on (none of the glitching though). Sennen
are from Norwich and to lump them in with the current crop of post rock
bands would be to miss the point – this in lush dramatic adrenaline rush
indie pop with a Byrds/Stone Roses edge. Beautiful and recomended and...

ARRAN
JOHNSON – In Metaphor And Sentiment (Dysfunctional Web) – Here’s a list
of words and names and places: acoustic, emo, Dashboard Confessional. Jimmy
Eats World, very mellow, singer songwriter, Barnsley – a whole list of
things I like to avoid. Hey I stuck it out for almost three songs. He does
what he does very well, he’s harming no one, if he wasn’t good at this
damn emo acoustic thing then I wouldn’t have bothered to type this and
give you a link now would I? No, I damn well wouldn’t, it’s a nice big
live and let live world and I’ll leave you with it now and politely yawn
my way over towards the door and my big bad emo gun. Two barrels loaded,
start running emo boy... . www.dysfunctionalweb.com
