THINGS TO GET EXCITED ABOUT
Our TV show....

THOM YORKE has posted some odd musings on the Radiohead website, and it seems to be a commentary on the critical response to his solo album 'The Eraser'. As usual, complete disregard for grammar, spelling and punctuation, plus random symbols, are all Thom's own:

"7 out  of  10

could do better. lacks correct motivation.

(the fence whistl;es like sleighbells)

John on the phone......
Oh, how frustrating is this, we just found this e.mail in our in box from Lesley Mitchell, manager of the rather exciting youthful Scottish band Allegro  - what can we say, such sad news, our thoughts are with Motion’s family, friends and band members.

“Since the early morning of Sunday 23 July our drummer Motion has been missing after falling into the  River Tay  from the Queen's Bridge in Perth. Then on Tuesday 25 July his body was found in the River Tay. I have been with the lads since day one of Allergo when they were only 15 yars old and I am stunned by what has happened.  Motion is my son's best friend and the chemistry between them off and on stage was amazing.  At the moment we have little on the website. This is a sickening blow to us all. Only 24 hours before he died my son came home with a new recording which he was greatly excited about. A tragic loss of a great talent- he was only 20 years old”. - Les Mitchell

Here’s the demo of the week review we posted here back in May.

ALLERGO – Tasty set of demos, two discs, one loaded with earfood, the other with eye candy (just in time for another round of Organ TV), They’re a gang of Teenage mutant metalheads from Perth (that’s in Scotland don’t ya know). Converge/Dillinger Escape Plan style intense extreme metal laced with relentless raw brutal colour. Their reputation arrived here ahead of them (oh yes the word has been seeping down) and these demos certainly back up that healthy Scottish reputation. .Screaming low-end yelping vocals that could be just a little bit of an easy option cop-out. Hey look, we’re being picky, others might not have had enough of these yelping vocalists just yet and he is rather good at it – there’s certainly personality enough to makes us go consult the lyric sheet and wonder who punched the designated driver as we find out just what Matt Evans is screaming about. Oh yes, impressive demo, 43% converged and they do have some healthy musical light and shade.  Actually when the music is this good then the extreme vocal style becomes a positive. Tight sharp construction, high-risk maneuvers bursting with future possibilities – www.allergonoise.co.uk

ORGAN ON YOUR RADIO @ RESONANCE 104.4FM - NOW IT'S WEEKLY! - See, even they've noticed "An oasis of subversion within a desert of corporate ass-rimming; a place to hear tomorrow's music today" NME (shame they don't cover the music themselves though)

The new year long series of ORGAN TV  is on your screens in the UK right now. Every   Wednesday evening, 10.30pm  on the OPEN ACCESS Channel on SKY 173

What's it all about? Simple, just good music, and the art of good video making...  Same musical policy as we've always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts, as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity for the open minded

(and if you think your video should be on then shout in our direction)

Music TV done ORGAN style

Coming up in the next few weeks things such as Mastodon, Weapons, Liars, Colt, MC Lars, Trencher, High On Fire, Tiger Force, 65Daysofstatic, Spit Like This, Gene Serene, Hafdis Huld, Against Me, Soviettes, Amon Tobin, Deerhoof and who knows who or what....

DEMO TIME
Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood

DEMO OF THE WEEK

SHILOE – Guardian Ear Of The Radio Nurse  -  Slightly psychedelic sounding melodic and slightly frazzled America indie rock of a rather confident Black Rebel Motorcycle Club meets X nature. Two girls and a boy from LA. Fuzztone riffs, droning guitars, they’re rather refined and rather good. www.shiloe.com

Last week's demo of the week - THE RAMPTON RELEASE DATE / BATTLEWITCH

Previous demo's of the week - THE FLESH HAPPENING / VESSELS / BLACK JACKSON / INNER RAGE / ALLERGO / BROOKE / CARTRIDGE / PERHAPS CONTRAPTION / THE PROCESS VOID

'NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK……
ALBUM OF THE WEEK

WEAPONS – Weapons (Wicked old Lady) - The album is here, Weapons been buzzing about London and (rightly) demanding everyone’s attention, the (increasingly packed) gigs we’ve lurked at the back of have more than wet the appetite. We’ve been looking forward to this particular set of intelligent musical bombs dropping. Weapons (of Mass Belief – the name has just been shortened) have already got a lot to live up to, they’ve set standard already, people are anticipating a lot from this debut. OK, cut to the chase, Weapons are a provocative six piece from London - via all points of the globe – Wales, South Africa, New Zealand and who knows where – a multi-limbed, multi-cultural, multi-sexual, multi-dimensional indie-guitar-rap in-control hurricane of a political rock twelve leg groove machine of a band. Think the indie RageATM, think Pixies cleverness, think Supergrass fused with biting rap-rock and a slice or two of Eminem and Abba and orchestral stings and strings and dives and street-sweeping swoops that can’t be kept down and and and... Oh yes, think all kinds of wholesomely good for you things, think Blaggers or Senser back in those glorious early energy fused days back there – yes, that good.  Don’t think of trying to pin it or them down though, Weapons are not a pindownable type of band. Weapons are rather unique actually. Clever songs, intelligent constructions, lush string sounds, appealing girl/boy voices that pull you in to their varied agenda and their political fire. They pulled it off, a rather fine debut album that back up their growing reputation – www.weaponsmusic.net

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 2

THE SOUND MOVEMENT – Ichi Go Ichi E (Truck) - This is really nice, no I wasn’t being ironic or clever, I wasn’t being a smartass, this is nice, this is just really really nice. Breezy, refreshing and so much substance, The Sound Movement are busting with refreshing goodness – the musical equivalent of very refreshing shower or that tingling sensation from freshly brushed teeth or just going out in the warm (not too warm) sun – just very nice, fresh and uplifting. Very fine indeed and very Eighties in a most positive way – breezy jangling kind of tinkling sound that tastes of wholesome things like The Church, Stone Roses, The Bunnymen, Chameleons and The Smiths and The Wedding Present. A musical waterfall, beautifully voiced, all so gloriously good for you. Seems they’re from Australia and they’re now holed up in London (via a stint in Manchester soaking up the vibes of their favourite bands). Kind of like that time when the Bridewell Taxis covered Don’t Fear The Reaper in that very fine very 80’s very indie way, maybe bits of Levitation and even The Police. Hey, The Sound Movement have a sound of their own, they have a sound that’s just right and if you like any of the bands we just mentioned (and you should, everyone should love The Church), then you will love this rather simple, rather clever uplifting compelling and rather recommended album. www.thesoundnovement.co.uk

THE PURPLE COW STORY – The Purple Cow Story (PCS) – What’s the story? Who is the purple cow? Who knows? Yeah yeah, I know it’s my job to tell you, it’s not a very dirty job and it is a pleasure to do it and yes I know someone has to so it may as well be us. The never ending challenge of pinning bands down with no more than words, am I stalling here? Looking for an opening line? You see, I like this strangely named story, they’re not really doing anything radically different, they do have a certain compelling style though. The Purple Cow Story are not easy to pin down – good, we like bands we can’t pin down. Some facts then: The PCS are from, well where are they from? I’m not even sure about that, there’s three of them, they don’t have a bass player, they talk of “high-end bass-less noise-rock”. There’s an intense passion here and things that taste of Sonic Youth and Big Black  - ah, they’re from Oklahoma and this clearly is a self released labour of love (and yes, no bass player and not much low-end). Fast, scuzzy, creative, urgent, a vibrant alternative new wave bite and a band who for once don’t want to be the Gang of Four. Seems they play every single night of their lives and people were demanding a recording, seems they’ve taken a little time to deliver the goods, seems they’ve been doing it all themselves – you wouldn’t know it, certainly doesn’t sound low budget, sounds just right, Albini would be proud of ‘em. He’d like the attitude, the raw (yet very clear and professional) sound, and the bits that kind of taste like the Cure and the naked fist fights in redneck bars and, ah well he’d just like it. Proper stuff, like Big Back or Jesus Lizard or Sonic Youth and with that much needed bit of identity that’s all the Purple Cow’s own – fine fine earfood, well worth your time and effort.  www.myspace.com/thepurplecowstory

ELECTRELANE – Singles, B-Sides and Live (Too Pure) – Lots of rare, non-album and live tracks all conveniently gathered together in one place at one time to ease your life just a little (while you wait for 2007’s new studio album). It’s that easy on the ear no messing courageous space rock/Stereolab flavoured thing. It’s a decent enough collection, a rounding up and keeping things tidy kind of exercise. Electrelane are good, not sure if they’re quite good enough to warrant this collection though.

LIVE
YEAH YEAH YEAH.... GIVE US A MOMENT,

SKINNED ALIVE Rule! Why? Part One:

Yesterday at Shady Acres in San Jose it was 104 degrees outside, and probably at least 110-115 inside, and humid. Those of us from the East Bay aren't prepared for those kinds of temperatures, but shit, WORHORSE is up here from L.A. and the show was booked way before we knew about this heat wave that's been killing family pets and sending our elders to the ER.

"The show must go on!"

Both WORHORSE and SKINNED ALIVE battled through the sweat, and in some cases hallucinations, to deliver the goods in an enviroment that could be best described as a preview of hell (remember how hot Mission Records could get? Double that shit). SKINNED ALIVE even did encores, and that's after the ROTTEN FUX crew couldn't take it any longer and left. Carrie bailed finally too, and Tony S.T.F.U. just kept it going. Finally I left, leaving just the band, a couple of the most hardcore dudes in the South Bay, Phil, and Yapple in that backyard sauna. From outside I heard Tony announce, "We got two more! For all those scenesters outside that are too cool to come in and watch the bands."

WORHORSE de Los Angeles were awesome again, and it's too bad that East Bay folks can't get off their asses for more than one show in a week (they had a SF show too on Friday, but I figured we'd be the only East Bay heads there, along with Yapple)?  WE KNOW who the true hardcore peops are because they were at Gilman on Saturday and Shady fuken Acres (which is an awesome venue that you should definitely check out) on Sunday, sweating and drinking warm beers. Coolness had nothing to do with it.

-Jay Unidos (Urban Guerilla Zine – San Francisco)

P.S. Cheers to Phil for hosting touring bands at his South Bay compound.

SINGLES
SINGLE OF THE WEEK

THE BLACK TULIPS – The Dogs Home EP (Scalpel) – More of their very eccentric high tea and bone white china tiers of slightly past their finest Sunday best cakes. Deliciously English and rather hat-stand and melancholic and happy and something’s amiss in the tea-rooms of Brighton. They’re rather compelling and sometimes curiously beautiful and slightly seedy and tangled and twitching lace curtains and her voice drags you in, and very very English and an underlined smell of naughty things – www.theblacktulips.com
