#169 > AUG 10th 2006 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon |

Snoopy
the snoop dog and everyone else at London Transport can go stick those
damn oysters right up their blink 182s with those damn razor shells and
the woodpecker fallout, they’re having a giraffe with those adverts while
they demand our names and numbers. More terror, get everyone’s name and
number, deal out the fear now, nothing hiding behind this picket fence,
there’s that crazy old woman smashing bottles again, she can’t use London
Transport anymore, she doesn’t understand how it works Ken. Arthur Lee
just died as well, some say she wasn’t so crazy back then before oyster
cards when people talked t each other and you could ask for help. Going
over to Susan’s place. 169, it’s a non stop operation, it’s still illegally
hot in here even if it has gone grey outside - hotter than a docker’s armpit
(that’s this week’s metal bit) and I don’t see how you expect an on-line
version of Organ to just magically appear here every week under these circumstances
– here it is, magic you see, as expected, turning worms and finger nails
that shine like justice. Peck peck peck peck, seems Ginger joined the Goddamn
Whores and off it all went at long long last. What happened to Keene, we
just watched their new video, that new album is very very disappointing,
we defended then with the first one, did they really have to let us down
like this? I guess we knew they would, all bands do in the end, everyone
does, almost everyone. Stung in my own garden by a bee, revenge indeed....

THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME |
MARK
E SMITH DOESN'T PRAISE MONKEYS and if Mark E Smith was coming to town,
would you wear a smile or wuod you wear a frown? So, Mark E Smith isn't
raving about Arctic Monkeys, however raving he may be in general – he is
a bitter Bertie Magoo but hey, we still love him and yes, let’s have him
running the Stasi once we’re in power (why aren’t we in power yet?). Mark
E Smith told Arena Homme Plus: "I think that the Kaiser Chiefs and Arctic
Monkeys should open a chain of chips shops in North Yorkshire. I think
that the East Germans had it right, actually. Every group used to have
to have a permit. Until they came up with anything culturally relevant,
like a classical composition. I think they should bring them in here. I
should start a musical Stasi. If you can't play in fookin time, then fook
off back to the factory." |
|
THINGS TO GET EXCITED ABOUT |
Ooo, there must be something?
You tell me, what excites you? You know, I must have listend to over 150
CDs in the last week to come up with this, and that's not even thinking
about all I listened to on line and all the videos I watched and the daytime
radio and
John on the phone...... |
| Arthur Lee (March 7th 1945
- August 3 2006) was the enigmatic, highly influential and sometimes
rather volatile leader, frontman, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist
of the legendary/pioneering Los Angeles psychedelic band Love. Love
were best known for the critically revered ground breaking 1967 album,
Forever Changes. Lee was often been compared to Syd Barrett, indeed Barrett,
early on in the brief pop star phase of his life, freely let it be known
that Love was an influence on his band, Pink Floyd. Love were an influence
on a lot of people, you may not have known Arthur Lee or Love, but his
music will have reached you via his influence on many of your favourite
bands. |

The new year long series
of
ORGAN TV is on your screens
in the UK right now. Every Wednesday evening, 10.30pm
on the OPEN ACCESS Channel on SKY

What's it all about? Simple,
just good music, and the art of good video making... Same musical
policy as we've always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts,
as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy
eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post
man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity
for the open minded
(and if you think your video
should be on then shout in our direction)
Music TV done ORGAN style
Coming up in the next few
weeks things such as Mastodon, Weapons, Liars, Colt, MC Lars, Trencher,

DEMO TIME |
| Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
SHADY
BARD – Three Songs – This is just right, three mellow, warm, beautifully
soothing songs, simple yet clever and with more than enough to invite you
deeper in to the delicious melancholy with every repeat play (I’ve had
it on repeat keeping me company for most of the evening now). Crafted delicate
songs that sway in a gentle emotional uplifting in a quietly magnificent
way. Three songs to make you feel good even when faced with environmental
catastrophe and shooting at the sun, shine on, shine on. Warm strings and
organic indie folkness, handcrafted beauty and hope and torch songs and
uplifting and kind of Calexico and the brilliant I Like Trains -
just quietly beautiful and everything that’s good about everything ever
– yes, just very very special, make the effort, you’ll be thankful you
did. www.shadybard.co.uk or www.myspace.com/shadybard

CROWNED
GLORY – Path To Glory - They start off like they want to be Saxon, then
they morph in to early Maiden, very very NWOBHM and all 1981 and pretty
good at doing it. We’ll leave you to decide if that’s a good thing or not,
if you do then there’s nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, here’s the link
that takes you to the other side, me? I love that NWOBHM stuff, something
not quite hitting the spot here, little more Krokus when I want Trespass
– www.crownedgloryuk.com
GOOBLER
– Pretty professional well crafted well made Tom Petty, Kinks style middle
of the road pop /soft rock should you want it – www.myspace.com/gooblar
ATIKUS
– Panacea – Pretty much a standard crunchy melodic modern metal outfit,
kind of Breed 77 style melody and crunchy brutality. Six tracks, London
band, they’re pretty good/technical competent at doing something we’ve
all heard quite a few times already. I need to be challenged a little more,
this is far too easy to pigeon-hole, sounds like far too many things we’ve
heard far too many times while the biog waffles on about how fresh new
and un-pigeonholeable they are. There could well be a decent modern metal
band somewhere in here if they just had the guts to take a few musical
risks – if there wasn’t a potentially good band threatening to break out
of this tedium then we wouldn’t bother with this review - www.atikus.co.uk

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK…… |
| ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
WHORES
WHORES WHORES - Unicorn (Seduction) - Abrasive scream fest of blistering
hardboiled stabbing screaming bloody noise and a band who clearly understand
that power of restraint and hell-bound politeness before the come back
to administer the next sharp edged beating, ah no, they’ve done away with
the light and shade now, it’s all jumping up and down and abrasive violence
and rabbit punches and Locust style creative tantrum and scream yell screeeeam
scream yell.. Oh, hang on we’ve hit a beautiful (brief) dreamy mellow bit,
the smog and swinging baseball bats with nails have gone and it’s love
and peace and waterfalls and arrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhh, aarhhhhhhhhhhh woo, GET
OFF ME, GET OFF ME! Arrghhhhhhhhhhh, relentless scream bloody gore and
more tantrum thrashing and Botch and scream and notoriously incendiary
and ten tracks that fly by in a screaming bout that only lasts seventeen
minutes – no standing about, no ref stepping in, just blazing noise and
clever off-kilter violence and The Locust and furiously chaotic relentless
sonic onslaughts and can I go sit down now please? Excellent noise, put
in on again, it’s not a matter of improving the world, it’s just about
clever satisfying challenging noise that saves us once more from all the
peck peck peck.... more, now, put it on again please! Whores Whores Whores
are an explosive quartet from Leeds, you can find them here – www.whoreswhoreswhores.tk
or here – www.seductionrecords.co.uk
and throughout history millions of people have been able to connect to
god without wires.
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK 2
THE
LOW LOWS – Fire On The Bright Sky (Monotreme) – There’s this warm reassuring
glow, or is it a hum? It’s a glowing hum, whatever it is, it’s warm and
inviting and just very very easy on the soul. I first found the Low Lows
one fine night whist out there surfing for those sounds that we know are
out there if we look, they pulled me in and downloads were downloaded and
played on the radio and burnt off tracks placed in the special treasure
box. Came as no shock whatsoever when our favourite label announced they
were to release the album over on this side of the Atlantic – Monotreme
strike again. The Low lows have that same understated magic that makes
us love Thee More Shallows so much and the production here is just so so
perfect, it’s that 2.00am warm summer nightness again. Listening to the
Athens GA trio is like siting outback in the quiet of the night (while
the rest of the world is sleeping) watching and listening to the insects
glow and hum – not right there in front of you, out in the distance somewhere,
just out of reach, kind of like gloworms somewhere out there hard to focus
on in the starlight. Deliciously dreamy and glowing in a wonderfully understated
Galaxie 500 alt.country kind of way. Walls of gentle dissonance and country
narcosis and soothing gentle caressing white noise beauty and steal guitars
and Tindersticks and Yo Lo Tango and a radiantly slow rolling panorama
that makes you so sure all is right. An almost distant sound, a stark warm
caressing beautiful sound, a rather unique and rather special sound, and
blue enough to float in. Beautiful. And then jsut when you think you have
a handle on it there's The Russian Ending. www.thelowlows.net
/ www.monotremerecords.com
– out in the UK on September 18th
ALSO CHECK OUT
FILTHY HABITS – No Sympathy
– Scathing angry shouty, badly recorded (just right, just how it should
be) raw, puss-drenched old school DIY angry shouty messy splattered to
the walls anarcho hardcore crust punk for people who love to lose themselves
in the almost nostalgic always glorious sound of Discharge and Conflict
and Seventeen Stitches and unsavoury, unwashed, righteously good things
like that (and sentences that go on far too long). Excellent, packed with
organic protein and dirty filth wholesome punk rock goodness – nine songs
including a Discharge cover (Fight Back) and just what you need in these
watered down shopping mall Hot Topic times... Stay away from this band,
you’ll hate them, they’re not good for you, your mummy wouldn’t like you
listening to them, stick with those nice bands with the pretty haircuts,
the ones you see on TV, the ones the glossy magazines say it’s OK to like.
Ban this filth, I thought we had this punk rock thing all cleaned up and
sanitised and in line and behaving now – what next? People spitting and
swearing and questioning authority? This in not what we want – go listen
to that nice bands Angels and Whatever, you know, that one that that nice
boy from Blink 182 started? And where are Good Charlotte when we need them?
www.filthyhabits.tk
SHOTGUN MONDAY – Read, Compare,
Adjust (Modern Radio) - Shotgun Monday are a rather clever, raw, tense
and melodically edgy frantic thing, a band for people who lust after that
slightly lost (here in the middle of 2006) lurching hardcore sound fine
bands like Helmet, Scissormen, Rosa Mota or Fugazi cultivated back there
then in the last bit of the last century. Shotgun Monday are not one of
those instant bands, they’re maybe not going to demand your attention straight
away, you may want to hang around and take the time to let the sound and
feel of Shotgun Monday seep in to your head though, let them peck away,
let their dynamic sound get inside your head, let them get their edgy discordant
cultivated hooks in and you will find they have a little extra all of their
own The frenetic angular guitar work is deceptively manic, it’s a
slightly filthy slightly gritty, and rather relentlessly urgent sound.
Classic intelligent alternative American post-hardcore guitar rock at it’s
very best. Plenty of twists and turns, satisfying amount of dark-edged
light and shade, give it time, it’s well worth it. www.myspace.com/shotgunmonday
THE OVERDOGS – Pawnshop Masterpiece
(Zero Youth) Pretty much standard issue decent quality satisfying enough
fast pace raucous raw driving low budget US drunk punk. Fifth album from
the Springfield band, and they sound like a Springfield band, apparently
the Springfield Newsletter was not amused with their foul language controversy.
This Springfield is Laciede County (isn’t there a place called Springfield
in every County in the UsofA), wonder if that’s where Bart lives? The Overdose
are OK, at least it’s not shopping mall product pushing Hot Topic style
‘punk’ bulshit. www.theoverdogs.com
VICE SQUAD – Defiant (S.O.S)
- Polished and slick, and rather 80’s/90’s sounding slightly melodic well
played metal that’s thankfully scuzzed and punked up more than a little
by Becky’s raw voice and hints of anger and kicking out and yes, her ageing
defiance. Not quite how you want Vice Squad to be musically, more for fans
of Warlock or maybe middle period Girlschool, still, Becky retains some
of the original Vice Squad defiance as she kicks at authority and systems
and apathy and yeah, oh bondage, up yours – www.sosrecords.us
CAMERA – Ashes And Dim Light
(My kung Fu) - Polite squeaky clean adult friendly rock, a slicker smoother
Stereophonics, actually in comparison Stereophnoics are Slayer (and Keane
are Motorhead on very bad drugs and preaching very dark revolution) – do
what you will with that brief bit of information, I feel like I’ve been
drinking coffee with seven sugars, here’s the link, they’re from North
Wales, I hung around for three tracks, I can’t stand those Stereophonics,
if this polite musical unadventure sounds like you’re thing then what the
hell are you doing on the Organ site anyway? There’s the link, off you
go (hey, I was in a good mood, I told you about it, I didn’t have to, you’ve
got the link, stop complaining, I could have just thrown it in the corner
and waited for them to get big enough for me to sell it on ebay for three
pound twenty plus postage) – www.cameratheband.com

this in from SchNews, hello hello....
Ifew weeks ago (See SchNEWS
550) SchNews mentioned that Bono's company Elevation Partners had bought
up Pentagon-puppet Pandemic Studios, makers of such eco-people-friendly
computer games as Mercenaries 2:World in Flames and Full Spectrum Warrior.
Because there was a joke or two in the article it seems many people didn't
believe it and thought it a spoof - clinging on to that rosy-tinted Live
Aid do-gooder image no doubt. Well...it was true. And it seems he still
hasn't found what he's looking for, but is wide awake in America when it
comes to one desire... more cash.
In another ethic-lite money-making
investment, Bono-head's California-based venture capital firm has now bunged
around $300m to Forbes, the US business magazine which is frequently described
as the 'bible of capitalism'. Meanwhile, having nailed his true colours
to the mast finally, Bono is obviously not fussed about the bad press from
switching U2's financial affairs from Ireland to Amsterdam in a massive
tax evasion manoeuvre. Nice work, comrade, lets hope it's a beautiful day
when your stock finally goes... pop. |

OF THE WEEK
DEAD
DISCO – Automatic (Fierce Panda) proper real throwaway pop music with substance
- the antidote, this is how it should be, why is pop music such a synthesised
sanitised over polish soulless thing? Why can’t it be like this? Gloriously
throwaway in the best of ways, 15 megabites of pop art fame and Blondie
and The Rapture and Bananarama and The Bangles and contagious hand claps
and synth pop indie dayglo lipstick and three girls from Leeds armed with
b-side indie anthems to put on repeat play – www.myspace.com/deaddiscohq

What are your favourite
United songs?
“[I am the] Resurrection’s
a United song, isn’t it? We launched my Golden Greats LP at Old Trafford
in 1999 and we released all these balloons. The game kicked off and all
these balloons were still flying about and my sons were bashing them out
of the way, saying: ‘I can’t see dad, these balloons are flippin’ doing
me ’ead in’. And I’m like: ‘They’re my balloons, they’ve got my
face on!’ They didn’t care
that I was launching my LP, they wanted to see Beckham going up the wing!”
