#174 > SEPT 7th 2006 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon |
|
| Sometimes
you have to think of other things, normal service will return next Thursday |
A
freak accident too, they hardly ever kill anyone, the only other death
by stingray happened exactly the same, the barb skewered his heart as he
swam over it, I liked that croc hunter, that kind of positive passion always
gets you in to trouble. Whoooooooooo I was gonna let you win but... Another
week, another on line Organ (and another couple of TV shows and a radio
show and...). And who has their hands on those links of power anyway, who
is leader of party anyway? Mr Brown? Butterfly racing? Ten foot wings?
Let’s not sit on the fence here, Little Man Tate, what an absolute load
of crap, the next big Arctic Kaiser hype, same again next time, things
don’t seem to get much better, these four walls won’t forget and if you
tolerate this then your children will be next. Are you really going to
do it this time?
Hang on, stop this, it’s
not just another week is it? Well you see we could just put another
weekly on line version of Organ, but then we hear our fellow zine writer
and underground music activist is back in hospital again – so we stopped
writing this week’s issue and you can go check out George Tabb and see
why, we’ll be back next week... hopefully George will still be... |

as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy
eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post
man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity
for the open minded
(and if you think your video
should be on then shout in our direction)

LIVE |
| GADDAFI: A LIVING MYTH -
ENO, London Coliseum
An opera based on the life
and times of Libyan dictator Colonel Gaddafi is going to be toe-tagged
'controversial' even before birth. I'm fortunate enough to attend the final
dress rehearsal/preview of this major work before the flak, plaudits, pontificating
etc begin, so bring only a vague memory of Asian Dub Foundation being pretty
good, and looking forward to something with a bit more spectacle than,
say, the back room of the Dublin Castle what with it being the English
National Opera n'all. Ok, and hope that no crassness will be done,
fluent arse spoken, ideas half-baked, none of that kind of thing.
I really could have left
my cynicism glands at home, because Gadaffi: A Living Myth mesmerises from
the opening moments. This is great story-telling. Projection-driven
staging that creates bold, elegant statements; incredibly immersive when
meshed with the human action on stage. These relatively new technologies
of clear, near cinema-quality projections, controlled with precision, are
becoming an art form in themselves within the rock world, but the potential
is greater. Here, it's sychronised with inventive theatre and bold on-stage
action. The music - a blend of electronica (often leaning towards
drum n bass), middle-eastern orchestral arrangements, hints of garage and
pop (think M.I.A at her best), and a choral, massed-chant combination of
all this that sounds pretty unique and wildly compelling - this music carries
the story via a (usually) spoken rather than sung libretto. In fact, the
story of, first, Libya, her people, her bloody history, then the rise of
Gaddafi, even the political wranglings of revolution and counter-insurgency
- the story comes through loud, clear and involving. The style achieved
by Asian Dub Foundation with the ENO orchestra becomes very natural in
this context. There is nothing tacked-on or culturally jarring to fear
- it works.
Superb cast - great choreography...
Ramon Tikaram perfectly cast as Gaddafi. This is a tale of a real country,
and real events, but an examination of how a real person becomes a symbol
- the living myth of the title. Almost a documentary, as told vividly by
the desert village storyteller. This is not, as a couple of papers
have suggested, Jerry Springer The Opera with terrorists. (There
are some sharp laughs). Gaddafi: A Living Myth is thought-provoking,
rather than just provoking. Terrorism is not condoned or even romanticised
(those high-stepping women with guns and battle fatigues are Gaddafi's
famed personal guard). This is much more about dictatorship, and
the inevitable post-revolution downward curves, and Western dissembling.
Of course, the first thing
you want to know on hearing about this work is: how are they going to handle
the grim stuff? Lockerbie - simple and dignified, short. Conspiracies
mooted over who really committed crimes. Gaddafi's funding of international
terrorism provides one of the most memorable moments - certainly the most
chilling. A stage full of dancers dressed in the uniforms of such
organisations freezes, long enough for their stance to sink in. I don't
think I've ever had a gun pointed directly at me before.
Gaddafi: A Living Myth is
long, but aside from scenes concerning revolutionary committees where the
action was hard to follow (possibly a dress-rehearsal sound issue) it was
absorbing all the way through, with moments of sheer exhilaration, of imagination,
sometimes poetry. If you can, go see it. (Marina)
