| "I'll
keep on building these ships till they get me the hell out of here" |
You
must be able to see the splashing of the swan now, no time to be majestic
and serene and it is a non-stop operation, your non stop organ organisation
org-an-archy and chaos and bite the hand that can’t be stopped and poor
little thing kicked out at the world, the world kicked back. Get
rock, throw rock, smash radio, what an annoying whinny voice that guy has,
why is he always on the radio? Why do I listen to the radio? What is evidence
based medicine? Who? What? Where? When – hey here’s some music for you
to explore, I think you’ll find it worth your time, we for the best music
don here in the undergrowth where things aren’t watered down for crossover
market potential and everyone wants to be Elton John and I do not feel
like dancing when the old joanna plays and we're way up with our strike

THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME |
RED
SPARROWES are to play: Exeter Cavern October 15, Birmingham Custard Factory
16, Glasgow Barfly 18, Dublin Village 20, Sheffield Corporation 21, London
King's Cross Scala 22, Bristol Croft 23, Southampton Nexus 24, Milton Keynes
Pitz 25.
MASTODON have been confirmed
as support Tool on their upcoming UK tour. The dates are Manchester MEN
November 25, Glasgow SECC 25, London Wembley Arena 27, Cardiff International
Arena 30, Nottingham Arena December 1.
Unfortunately HUNDRED
REASONS have postponed their October UK tour. Singer, Colin Doran has been
complaining of hoarseness and pain in his throat since before HR played
in Japan in early September. He took a week off from rehearsal and it seemed
to be a lot better, but since he returned to the studio last week it's
actually been a lot worse. Having seen a specialist this week it appears
Colin has nodes on his vocal chords, which if left unchecked could leave
him unable to sing permanently. A spokesperson called Dani said “Canceling
or postponing shows is something the band never do lightly, having only
ever done so on a handful of occasions over the last six years. The dates
are being rescheduled and new dates / details of what to do with existing
tickets will be announced as soon as possible”.
DEFTONES ANNOUNCE LONDON
SHOW - they will play a one-off show in London on 12 Oct at Electric Ballroom
in Camden. Tickets go on sale on Friday. The band release a new album,
'Saturday Night Wrist', which features guest appearances from System Of
A Down's Serj Tankian and Giant Drag's Annie Hardy, on 30 Oct.

Whoooooo, I tell you who
was on the phone this week, telling us we have a bad attitude because we
didn't give them and their albums good reviews and how they'd advertise
with us if we did and how they never have this problem with "bigger magazines"
and how they had heard from several labels that we have a bad attitude
- too damn right we have a bad attitude, if your music isn't good enough
then you can't buy a good review, you're mistaking us for the music business

ORGAN
ON YOUR RADIO @
RESONANCE 104.4FM -
NOW IT'S WEEKLY! - every Sunday night, 10.30pm, one hour of us on the radio.
X |
The new year long series
of
ORGAN TV is on your screens
in the UK right now. Every Wednesday evening, 10.30pm
on the OPEN ACCESS 2 Channel on SKY
173. And now due to the
fine response, repeated every Sunday on SKY 883 at 11.30pm.
What's it all about? Simple,
just good music, and the art of good video making... Same musical
policy as we've always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts,
as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy
eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post
man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity
for the open minded
(and if you think your video
should be on then shout in our direction)
Music TV done ORGAN style
Coming up in the next few
weeks things such as Mastodon, Weapons, Zero Ciper, Cats And Cats And Cats,
Liars, Colt, MC Lars, Trencher, High On Fire, Tiger Force, 65Daysofstatic,
Spit Like This, Gene Serene, Hafdis Huld, Against Me, Soviettes, Amon Tobin,
Deerhoof and who knows who or what.... |

DEMO TIME |
Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
LEAVE
THE CAPITAL – beautifully strong explosions in the sky, people have been
talking about this very fine five piece band from Cardiff for a little
while now (and we’ve be watching and waiting to see what would emerge when
they finally thought it right). Rather than rushing headlong in to the
maelstrom, the five of them have been cleverly refining and crafting their
rather beautiful, rather powerful, rather delicate sound. Keeping out of
the light until they were ready to stand up and do it their way – seems
they spent time building it, like a whole ship out of matchsticks (out
in a watershed) and now they’re ready to be explored, ready to leave. It’s
a swooning delicate sometimes sparkly sound, slow and creamy and deliciously
moody and laced with slowdives and emotive coldlight and little details
that delight. Prone to the occasional outburst of quiet restrained
cleverly reigned-in post-rock noise - strong strong songs though, don’t
let that first taste fool you, there’s real depth and substance here, not
just another set of Mogwai post-textures. Matchstick really does get inside
and set your sails - those infectious lines will be coming out of your
mouth before the daylight appears – children stand up, children put your
hands up in the air – and it won’t be the first and it won’t be the last,
there’s lots of ships to build here. They have that drama of Doves, there’s
more to hold on to though, more detail in there with the beauty of Sigor
Ros and yes, Explosions In The Sky (you have to be special to have Explosions
name dropped in one of our reviews). Leave The Capital are a five piece
from Cardiff, the important thing is that they have songs that will stay
with you. www.myspace.com/leavethecapital

APPARATUS – blustery solid indie rock, the kind of thing bands like Novacaine

here's the link). www.myspace.com/theapparatus

ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
CATS
AND CATS AND CATS – Sweet Drunk Everyone (Win Win Win) - Thanks and thanks
and thanks, oh look, it’s going to be another one of those frothing Organ
reviews, this is why we do all this, this is why we stick to doing all
this Organ stuff, this is why it’s worth every single minute and putting
up with all the frustration and everything that comes our way. Cats And
Cats And Cats are just wonderfully uplifting and so so so good for your
soul, they can lift you right up so you really can touch the very top of
the sky. Five fine tracks and forty minutes of musical angel delight and
Heinz chocolate sponge pudding and custard and indie-edged post-rock warmth
and stars and clever intricate time changes and everything is just right.
I don’t know how they manage to do it but they somehow sound like both
Cay and 65Daysofstatic at the same time, two of the finest bands of the
last decade, Cats have both the delicateness and strong need for musical
adventure of them both – ah yes, we like Cats los and lots and lots. They’re
kind of fragile and rather indie and slightly scratchy sounding and yes
so rich and full and vast and big and like big clouds of hope and every
bit as triumphantly good as say Sigor Ros and dripping in positive prog
rock adventure to keep the most demanding tales of topographic prog-snob
happy as well. Oh look, five brilliant tracks, five long tracks,
five musical adventures that you really should explore, they’re from Southern
England and the world is theirs – glorious www.myspace.com/catsandcatsandcats
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK 2
I LOVE POLAND – ILP (Denial)
- This is really rather good, they’re from Leeds, they have this certain
sense of texture, a warm dusty analogue take that probably comes from old
keyboards and things that make you dance dance dance to the radio. They
sound like they obsess over old broken fragile temperamental stnths, the
sort you find unloved in second hand shops with broken hearts and gaffa
tape bandages, the sort that create those sparse soundscapes – the
bedsit textures of Joy Division. The band prefer to talk of Mark Almond
and kitchen sink drama and glam rock and camp electro disco, sounds more
like Joy Division (without ever being another clone) to me (I can’t hear
the glam), lighter in tone, sweeter taste, sounds wonderful – sounds bleak
and sleazy and a little in need of a wash and brush-up, sound dirty, tastes
of forbidden things. They’re a duo, there’s a delicious sparseness and
space to breath and drum boxes but they don’t really sound like a duo –
they do sound like a full band, alright, they sound Pet Shop Boys in a
bathroom when you probably shouldn’t look too closely in to what they’re
doing. This is very very good – tales of integrity and the death of England
and the lack of social disorder and imposters and they sound like some
long lost treasure from 1979, something off that Some Bizarre album and
this is very very very good – I love I Love Poland. www.ilovepoland.org
oh look, we've been busy
and those Cats have taken up all our ear time so so so not much else to
check out this week but hey....
ALSO
CHECK OUT
AGE
OF CHAOS – Portobello Knuckle Fighter (A.O.C) – No messing, ready for a
ruck, in your gnarled and scared messed up face, old school shouty London
streetpunk. More Sid Vicious and Ronnie Biggs doing time until he done
a bunk than Johnny Lydon art attacks. Real Professionals (yeah, capital
P), they could only be from Landen town. Swearing and Oi and Rejects and
Upstarts (what yer gonna do?) and www.age-of-chaos.co.uk
is where you go for more.
SANCTORUM
- The Heavens Shall Burn (Rising) – Debut album from the UK band, they’re
very very good at what is a standard issue technically proficient brutal/melodic/extreme
thrash metal sound. All done rather well and abrassively powerful and all
that, but hey, come on - they’re as faceless as their name, surely there’s
already been 37 thrash metal bands called Sanctsomethingorother already?
All extremely professional and brutal and crunchy. Melodic bits when you
need them, epic when it needs to be, relentlessly powerful and it’s pretty
hard to fault what they’re doing and it’s all very predictable (and wrapped
in cliched forgettable artwork that kind of warns you before you get there)
and I’ve had enough and I’m going to leave it with you and go find a band
who aren’t content to sound like a very good version of things already
heard too many times. www.sanctorom.co.uk
/ www.risingrecords.co.uk
LOVEMAT
– The Fearless Hairdays Of Youth (Disturbia) - They’re from up North, they
do that poppy punky slightly glammy garage rock thing that tastes of Turbonegro
and bits of Hanoi Rocks and The Damned. They have a finger print (and a
swagger) of their own and that brass, along with the healthy pop edge,
for some reason gives them a Zutons (with a rocket up their arse) feel
- maybe more Rocket From The Crypt in their with that adolescent energy
that Zutons adultness. A youthful energy that explains the fine album title
and “five best friends in the early stages of adulthood, messing around
with ideas and having a great tome releasing their debut album on their
own label. Isn’t that what it’s all about?” yes it is - www.lovemat.com

LIVE |
WOVEN HAND @ Neumos’ Seattle,
WA. - September 19th
“This circle is vicious
Spoken by the hand
It is the storm
That brought me in
Hallelujah
Hallelujah” *
Sometimes music makes me
think in plain words. Sometimes I am unable to resist the urge to move
or dance, and sometimes, it takes me to places where I’ve never been, where
I see places and things in my mind. Tom Waits’ songs, for example, always
give me good visuals. Sad drunken lost souls sharing stories in sleazy
hotel rooms, where the neon is blinking and buzzing through the window,
and the odor of damp garbage is wafting up from the squalid, dank alleyway
nearby. You know, things like that. Song noir, I call it. Okay - I just
made that up on the spot. I don’t really call it song noir. When
I listen to Delta Blues, I sometimes wonder if reincarnation is in fact,
possible, because I can feel the music so profoundly - I absolutely know
it. And while I am listening, it’s as if I’ve been transported to that
space in time Did I live then too? I suppose I’ll never know.
There is music out there,
that brings me to a place I’ve never ever been, and strangely enough, the
setting in my head, is always surreal in the sense that it is usually dark
and dreary, as if set inside tintype photo. That, or I am astride a swayback
nag, clip-clopping through some strange sepia-toned woods. The colors are
always grays and browns, with hints of promise. I am not sure exactly where
this music takes me. Somewhere into the recesses of my soul is where.
David Eugene Edwards, formerly
the foremost songwriter and lyricist of Sixteen Horsepower, has been playing
and writing solo, his project called Woven hand for the past several years.
Mainly touring in Europe, so I was thrilled when I got wind that he was
touring the states.
When I first heard his music
on the radio by chance one day, I was pulled in immediately. “Who is this?”
and “I must go purchase some right away” were my first reactions. I don’t
remember the song, but I remember the banjo, and the feeling that permeated
my depths. Was this old music? Or old music re-captured? I had to find
out, and I did. Low Estate was my first 16 HP cd purchase. I listened to
it again and again. It wasn’t long before I’d decided that David Eugene
Edwards’ songs and lyrics were in the ranks of Tom Waits, Nick Cave, et
al, and I later came to discover that I wasn’t the only one to lump him
into this elite category. Over the years, he has been lumped here many
times over, by many people. The music has been called “from the Old
world to another world”, “Bauhaus meets Billy Graham” and “an anathema
to Christian music” D.E.E. is a man of strong faith. In his lyrics, he
uses scripture indirectly, his strong conviction in his faith to bring
his version of truth, the need for redemption and salvation, the darkness
of the human soul, the depravity of man, into his music, and he truly believes
that the Lord enables him to do what he does, i.e. write music, tour, and
bring it to the people, whether it causes them to praise the Lord along
with him, or squirm with discomfort for whatever reason, all the while
tapping one’s toe, or swaying to the music. Personally, I find it
interesting that I am so completely and utterly drawn to this man’s music,
because I have never been of the religious sort. I was not raised in a
religious household at all, I have yet to read the bible in full, I don’t
believe in original sin, nor do I fear being cast to hell. I am perfectly
comfortable in my own spirituality, and the destiny of my soul. My inner
peace is intact, thankyouverymuch. With all of that said, DEE delivers
when he plays. A skilled musician, he plays a variety of instruments, banjo,
bandoleone, concertina… I’ve heard word that and his newest guitar is some
40+ years old. He has an intense presence, barely talks to the audience
at all, and what he does, is steeped in Old world, traditional song stylings
reminiscent of the deep American south. Appalachia, the Bible belt, but
with a dark and moody undertone reeking of fire and brimstone, and maybe
some sulfur. Whatever the HELL kind of music it is, I burn for more.

a song on Mosaic.

SINGLES |
SINGLE
OF THE WEEK
JESUS
LICKS – Dalek Chorus EP (Post) - There’s almost too much good music around,
treats and delights and things you just can’t easily put your finger on
– it’s no wonder they choose to ignore it all at places like the NME, your
head could very easily burst with all the brilliant music that’s around
right now. We’ve never had it so good, the music is better than ever if
you’re prepared to go look for it. I’d like to think that somewhere in
some universe this is number 1 and no one is force feeding you the bad
Elton John hair-transplants of those twisted scissor sisters. Jesus Licks
are just a perfect delight – delicate voices, acoustic, kind of folk flavoured
but nothing like that idea of folk that most of us have – totally un-folk
actually. Banjos and beautiful songs, and glowing voices and songs of Doctor
Who and the bad curvature of Barbie and anarchy and high heel conformity
and rich textures and the Battle Of Evermore goodness. Jesus Licks are
two boys and two girls from London, they play with banjos and flutes and
ukuleles (and more convention rock-friendly instruments). The lead track
on this fine (crushed raspberry vinyl) seven inch ep is a delicate romantic
thing from the perspective of a the very much misunderstand daleks and
how they need some help from Doctor Who (or something like that), Harr
Barbie meanwhile is words adopted from the side of Barbie packaging and
oh look, it’s overwhelmingly good and unreasonable to expect us to put
its haunting beauty and lyrical bite in to mere words and you really should
go to www.myspace.com/jesuslick
and see what we mean or alternatively go to www.jesuslicks.co.uk
