WHAT’S
WEASEL
WALTER UP TO TODAY?
“Whazzup . Whew. I'm on tour
playing drums with Lair Of The Minotaur and having a really good time.
I'm finding lots of new inspiration in playing metal right now. We're on
tour with some really great bands... Cattle Decapitation are totally killing
and Goatwhore rule old school Satan style. I was always a little skeptical
about Cattle, but their new album is miles beyond their old stuff and with
Kevin Talley sitting in with them on drums for the tour, they are just
totally destroying. Goatwhore are great guys and they play a totally kickass
mixture of black/death metal with catchy riffs and great drumming. It was
a lot of work for me to learn the 50 minutes of material I needed to get
in my brain for this tour, but it's been worth it. I'm going to continue
to play with Lair as long as everything works out (the long distance thing
is the only big issue, but shouldn't be a problem). It's nice to take a
break from being a f**king goddamn avant gardist for a while and just go
out there and assault a drum kit, making some intense rock happen.”
Coming soon: Weasel Walter
Quartet "Revolt Music" CD on ugEXPLODE 12/15/06,
Barr/Walter/Hillmer 10"
EP (finally), Aurora Josephson Group CD early 2007, Weasel Walter early
4track recordings CD on Savage Land, xbxrx experimental record on important,
xbxrx "wars" lp on polyvinyl 4/07, Luttenbachers "Tales Of The Mad Robot"

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK…… |
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
INTRONAUT
– Void (Lifeforce) – An instantly grabbing rewarding debut album from Los
Angeles quartet Intronaut. Powerful sonic metal, epic adventure and an
ever changing challenging demand musical landscape. Nothing can distract
from the instance attention-demanding sounds, not even a Tornado hitting
us four tracks in. No really, that did happen here
today while we were listening to this for the first time!. We have some
serious front line top quality progressive metal music-making musicians
here, and one seriously good band – all kinds of diverse route taking.
Intense, aggressive - minimalist intensity, sometimes jazzy, sometimes
brutal (sometimes very brutal), sometimes sparse and restrained. The vocals
are growly, not too invasive though, the vocals work well, Intronaut understand
the power of light and shade and less is always more, quite a few long
instrumental passages here. very Neurosis in a very positive way, Neurosis,
the ambient journeys of Isis, the quality and power of Mastodon, the discordant
melody of Voivod, the death metal-fusion of Cynic, not a problem though,
Intronaut add more than enough colour and edge of their own, they’re already
right up there with the best as equals rather than mere followers.
Void is a seriously satisfying album, and on more than just one level;
you’ve got more then enough to keep the demanding of inventive polyrhythm
math-metal heads happy, yet they’re accessible enough to just rock in the
most magnificently easy to listen to kind of way – intelligently clever,
rewarding, deep, pioneering, yet never indulgently wanky – Intronaut have
it all just so right and Void comes very highly recommended. - www.lifeforcerecords.com

SEASICK
STEVE – Dog House Blues (BronzeRat) Rather fine old school real-deal lo-fi
blues, Seastick Steven Wold, genuine American freight-train hoping blues
playing hobo and a rather impressive album that really could have been
made any time in the last fifty years, actually if someone had told me
this was recorded in 1947 I’d have believed them. Seems he’s pretty much
done it all, played with Lightning Hopkins in the 60’s, left home at 14
and learnt his first chords off old Delta guys in his teenage years. He
has a gravel-sweet voice, he’s drenched in soul. Seems he was in Seattle
in the 90’s and people like Modest Mouse and Bikini Kill got his vibe.
Hey look, thirteen fine slices of raw stripped back to the bone old school
lo-fi blues played with just the right amount of soul and attitude. Pretty
clear why people who know far more than me about this kind of stuff say
he’s one of the finest bluesmen in the world. www.bronzerat.co.uk
TRISTANIA
– Illumination (SPV) - Lush dark symphonic Norwegian female/male duel vocal
goth metal with an occasional heavy edge for fans of HIM or Evanescence
or Lacuna Coil. They add an edge of their own, if this is your kind of
thing then they’re rather good at it, bit of a Sisters feel here and there,
actually you dark disciples of the old school will be more than happy .
www.tristania.com
AS
SILENCE FALLS – As Silence Falls (Sugarshack) - Melodic, energetic emo
screamo metal with an old school epic edge. A debut five track mini album
from South Wales and they’re for all you Bullet For My Valentine fans who
like a bit of Maiden on the side. ASF (hey, isn’t that Alien Sex Fiend!)
do it really well, heard it all before though, no identity, no x factor
- really good at what they’re choosing to do but hey, (and they’ve gone
very very Maiden now and there’ll probably be a free pull out poster and
a load of hype in Kerrang any week now) just what is the point? I don’t
know, if it sounds interesting here’s a link, live and let live and they
do do it really well, they deserve a mention www.sugarshackrecords.co.uk
THE
SINISTERS – Terminal Volume (Fading Ways) – Some kind of politely scuzzy
Stooges/Zodiac Mindwarp/Dictators thing from Canada, they have all the
moves, feels a little safe though. Kind of like trying to get trashed on
low alcohol larger or stabilizers on your push bike or no sugar in your
expresso shot or putting coke in your Jack or oh I don’t know, we were
just going to let it pass but ya man kept on insisting we review it. www.fadingways.co.uk

Early
Napalm Death cited by UK Turner Art Prize Nominee Mark Titchner
Mark Titchner, one of the
Art world's nominees for 2006's prestigious ‘Turner Prize’ has declared
the music of Napalm Death as distinctly influential in his work. Titchner
explains the appeal of ‘abrasive music’ and describes his interest in how
bands such as Napalm Death are able to use the voice as an instrument and
push the boundaries of language.
Titchner sees a vivid resemblance
between the style of Napalm Death’s music and what he depicts within his
art, choosing one of the founding members Nicholas Bullen to speak on behalf
of his work. In an interview about the artist, Bullen describes the similarities
between the two stating that “I think in the work that I’ve made in the
past in terms of music, we’ve always tried to be very dense, to distil,
to compress sound into sudden bursts and forward movements, to try and
move towards what we would perceive as the future, and I think Mark does
that in the sense of, his work, whilst never stating a utopian vision,
always hints at that and hints at a sense of joy of being alive”.
You can take a look at Mark’s
work and listen to Nicholas Bullen’s opinions on it at www.tate.org.uk/britain/turnerprize/2006/marktitchner.htm
Earache Records issue a 20
year anniversary edition of the highly influential debut Napalm Death album
Scum in early 2007, complete with an recently filmed in-depth DVD documentary
about the making of the album.

THEY
CAME FROM THE STARS. I SAW THEM - The Spitz, London
Another ill-fated gig, all
the way to the East End for Cleckhuddersfax, but I didn’t see them. Billed
to be on early, instead Cleckhuddersfax were shifted to last on the bill,
and with the clock heading for 11pm I gave up, this after enduring some
truly awful art college performance ‘music’. The evening wasn’t entirely
lost, however. I did catch They Came From the Stars, I Saw Them, and saw
something worth reporting. It’s essentially the spirit of late 80s rave
without the revolutionary posturing. It’s about dancing and having a good
time without worrying whether the rozzers are going to invade the place
brandishing a copy of the Public Order Act. Musically, it’s an uplifting
amalgam of 808 State (lots of digital technology abounds), The Shamen’s
commercial edge, complete with a smattering of ‘real’ instruments that
give the music an authentic edge. The lead singer, in white boiler suit,
looks young enough to be at school, but he’s positively bubbling with confidence,
dancing non-stop and seemingly convinced that everyone in the place is
as much into it as he most obviously is. We’re a fluorescent stick away
from a nightclub rave, but it’s all rather innocent and infectious, and
seems at this early stage to be far less self-conscious than the initial
movement which ended in the alienated scene drawn by Pulp in ‘Es and Wizz’.
There are some other young outfits doing the same thing, with The Klaxons
leading the way. Not my cup of tea, but, then again, we can’t ignore the
kids when they start running with their idea of tomorrow’s music.

YOUTHMOVIE
SOUNDTRACK STRATEGIES - 93 Feet East, London.
A much-anticipated London
outing for Oxford’s Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies tonight. Not much
has been seen of them in the capital since they finished touring their
Fierce Panda debut, an unusual outing at the Soho Curzon excepted. Reports
from provincial gigs suggest that there’s a lot of new material in the
bag, though tonight they start with ‘Ores’, their single. Though probably
the shortest and most un-crooked song in their repertoire, ‘Ores’ is still
a tour-de-force of invention, and they follow with a number of newer songs,
all of which I’m hearing for the first time. Initial impressions are that
Youthmovies are still packing the ideas in, and aren’t afraid to work them
out for as long as they feel necessary. But what is apparent is their conversion
to singing. The less warbling the better seemed to be their mantra before,
but now singer Andrew Mears, a plaintive crooner in the Morrissey vein,
finds himself at the microphone more or less continuously. This doesn’t
imply songs in the verse-chorus structure, but maybe an indication that
the Youthmovies have found their voice in cultivating more of an identity
beyond their twisting, epic songs and the wordy titles. There also seemed
to be less input from the keyboard, none of those warm Orb-like thermals
drifting around as before, though the venue is a bare room where I’ve rarely
heard a decent sound.
Towards the end of the set
they give an outing to ‘A Little Late He Staggered Through The Door And
Into Her Eyes’, a song that wends its way through a number of moods before
a short section of terrace-like chanting and clapping, with which the whole
front section of the crowd join in, before the raucous finalé comes
crashing in. It’s a reminder of why Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies made
such an impression during their first prolonged period of exposure a couple
of years ago (yep, two whole years since they blew everyone away at the
Barfly, including Biffy Clyro and their gob-smacked cheerleaders). It also
shows they have recruited a small band of devoted followers – and that
support is no bad thing. Before the final song, guitarist Al innocently
asks if anyone can lend them a floor for the night, a reminder that even
with a critically-acclaimed album behind them, it’s not made things any
easier. But they have persevered and, if tonight is anything to go by,
Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies have been brave enough to move their sound
on. They still don’t subscribe to convention or accessibility, and their
set couldn’t be described merely as a series of songs. If they played the
whole lot in one go it would be possible to describe it as a series of
movements within a symphonic whole – there is that sense of cohesiveness
within all the awkward tangents, and that’s what makes Youthmovie Soundtrack
Strategies a band to cherish. Good to have them back.

SINGLES |
SINGLE
OF THE WEEK
THOMAS
TANTRUM – Armchair (Marquis Cha Cha) I like this, I wasn’t sure first time,
do be sure to give them a chance, I love it now. Female fronted and scratchy
and wiry, not too scratch though, kind of relaxed Sonic Youth/Cat Power
edge, almost folky in a very unfolky way. They are quirky, but in such
an unquirky way that it makes no sense to really say they are, nothing
ever does make sense, this fine debut single makes perfect sense and I
really don’t know why I didn’t get it straight away, off off off to jail.
They’re from the English South Coast and the second of two tracks – Trust
Rhythms With Crust is rather beautiful and indeed special. The press release
mentions “little red riding hood vocals with the wolf lurking somewhere
in the background”, I like that, I’m going to steal it for this review,
you’ll never know. Limited to 500, I’d grab it quickly, order it
from www.puregroove.co.uk or
