IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME? |
| SPIRITWO has her
debut single out on ORG on FEBRUARY 19th
Part 29 of the ever evolving
ORG-AN-ISED
SINGLES SERIES, hot on the tail of January’s LEAVE THE CAPITAL
single. February’s release is a rather delicious left-field four tracker
from SPIRITWO
You may recognize the lead
track Foundling, Spiritwo’s rather warm version of the much loved CARDIACS
classic, indeed that second track might be bugging you just a little, a
rather different interpretation of SEPULTURA’s Inner Self (the band
love it, there’s been talk of a collaboration, Spiritwo knows her metal,
she’ll argue with you for hours over the merits of Carcass and Kreator).
The other two tracks here are Spiritwo originals, a taste of her rather
lush debut album, I think I like her originals more that her rather unique
covers.
Who is she (or are Spiritwo
a band?) She has a big big underground following, shows in performance
art venues, gay clubs where hoards of cross-dressing Spiritwo lookalikes
in big wigs and high heels mob her
The four track CD, part 29
of the ORG-AN-ISED SINGLES SERIES brought to you by ORG Records and ORGAN
zine, is out on FEB 19th. Part 30 is on the way, first week of March, it's
gonig to be a good one

The Pink Fairies are
very sad to announce that due to circumstances beyond their control they
will not be playing the Roundhouse on January 22nd 07. Unfortunately guitarist
Larry Wallis has sustained a painful back injury making playing the gig
impossible. The Pink Fairies' management say "Larry
has tried Osteopathy, Acupuncture, Chinese Massage and strong drugs, all
to no avail. Short of sacrificing a goat and dancing in the woods, he's
run out of options... " There are no plans to reschedule in the foreseeable
future so any bookings made on a credit/debit card will be fully refunded
back to the card. Any cash or cheque bookings will be refunded by a cheque
sent out in the next two weeks. Any queries please contact the Roundhouse

as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy
eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post
man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity

DEMO TIME |
| Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
LILY
GREEN - An exceptionally good female composer-singer-songwriter,
sailing way above the usual. She writes in a way that combines accessible
experimentation and emotive melody reminiscent of Peter Gabriel at his
best, whilst her luscious and romantic voice dares to evoke comparisons
to Kate Bush. Yes, that good. This collection of songs are
vivid, extremely contemporary and timelessly atmospheric. Soft-edged
electronica, packed with ideas, is woven with acoustic and classical instruments,
somehow avoiding the cliches heard from so many similar artistes. Beginning
with a piano-based piece, Patience, with the feel of the Sea Nymphs/Bill
Drake, this eight track demo/mini-album explores variations on a spacious
sound, a folky yet dark feel, gothic in the best sense of the word. Starry
Sky is simple and elegant and haunting. Lily Green has a beautiful,
easy, unforced voice that you rarely hear, matched with a genuine talent
for production and composition - the kind of talent you can't put a finger
on, but know when you hear it. This is something special. www.myspace.com/lilygreenartist

SHILOE
– Please Remove Your Teeth From My Neck – Another six track demo from the
LA band with a rather 80’s Cure meets Fuzztones meets X set of flavours,
once you let them breath and get under your skin a little they’re really
rather good. www.shiloe.com
BUTCHER
BLUES FOUNDATION – One – Five track demo, raw edgy blues, five slices of
quality edgy raw blues delivered with attitude. Nice production, classic
three piece line up, bit of a Blues Explosion, Saint Silas vibe - although
they do have their more restrained melodic hard rock side, which kind of
makes it hard to actually get a fix on them, this is going to need a little
more investigation and a sneak in to the back of one of their gigs. I really
like four of the five tracks and that raw White Stripes feel they have,
that fifth is dangerously Gary Moore melodic blues metal though, watch
this space – or better still, go make up your own mind – www.butcherbluesfoundation.co.uk
DIRTY
PROTEST – Whole filthy bag load of festering old school proper scratchy
catchy itchy street punk (and bad language), slices of ska and blasting
real deal crustcore squat noise’d up brewcrew shouting and skanking. Raw
d.i.y punk rock chaos and creative destruction and yes. I love it like
you love the versatility of the f word - don’t f with me buddy, who the
f was that, I like what the f is going on here. For people who need a fix
or two of bulshit free proper punk and Citizen Fish and Doctor And The
Crippens and Heresy and The Stupids and you get the picture... Seven tracks,
from Ipswich if I remember rightly (I lost the letter that came with it
already, hey look, things get busy around here, hundreds of things coming
right at our heada every day, everyone demanding attention and throwing
hissy fits when they don’t get it, not Dirty Protest, they were disturbingly
polite). Go find out where they’re from via www.myspace.com/realdirtyprotest
And
sometimes we have to say something....
FAHRENHEIT
451 – The Battleground Is Everywhere – Fahrenheit 451, is that where the
fun had just begun? Not here, a little more substance and some roughage
wouldn’t go amiss. Blustery indie rock from Essex, it arrived here with
a piece of paper that made a lot of claims, unfortunately that’ve lost
all the anger, danger and urgent energy of last time. For some strange
reason they’ve watered it all down and opted for some lightweight passion-free
Muse style cop out small town ambition-free compromise . I see they’re
quoting an old Organ review on their press release. How embarrassing, they
really don’t back it up here with these latest insipid gutless moves. If
they weren’t quoting us then we’d have just ignored this demo, but hey,
it you’re going to use our quotes you need to back it up a little more
than this, it’s our reputation. Wonder what happened? Next please.... www.f451.org.uk

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK…… |
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
NUM
9 – The Glo-Worm’s Resistance (Acuarela) - Acuarela are turning out to
be a rather good label, they keep serving up these little treats, the Madrid
based label is not one of those you can easily pigeonhole, there isn’t
an Acuarela sound, you just know that the music is going to be interesting,
challenging, and you know that it will be coming in from somewhere left-field.
Num 9 are strange and intoxicating, they’re introspective, slightly dark,
rather mysterious and delightfully impossible to describe – let me try.
Think a New Order or maybe even a Pet Shop Boys for the avant post-rock
audience, delicate left-field pop laced with warm found sound, glowing
textures, reward details, challenging arrangements. Clever songs, songs
and sounds that pull you in and offer you more with each listen. Layers
of analogue sounding synths, swollen contentment, sweet fluctuations, stark
interludes, spoken word passages, beauty that pushes buttons, warm delight,
ambitious, delightful. www.acuareladiscos.com

FURZE
– UTD (Candlelight) – Black metal from Norway, Furze have always been a
little more interesting/challenging/disturbing than most. What is going
on this time? Woe J Reaper is back from the woods with a bizarre album
title for a start, let me give it you in full; “UTD: Beneath the Odd-Edge
Sounds to the Twilight Contract of the Black Fascist / The Wealth of the
Penetration in the Abstract Paradigmas of Satan”. Seems the album is split
in two, two different sessions. Lots of long (silly?) titles and lyrics
that naturally can’t be made out, I don’t know how dubious they are and
frankly I can’t be bothered to go and find out what all the deeds that
grasp at the candle’s shade mean - and as for the fascist stuff, who knows
what their angle is? Comic book death seems to be their only real interest,
no other agenda. What we do have here is a black metal band who continue
to have the musical guts to not want to sound like all the others, it is
(as Celtic Frost’s Martin Aim has pointed out whilst talking about Furze)
still possible to make black metal and sound unique. Extreme wasp stuck
in hell’s own jam jar buzzsaw speed metal sound, avant interludes, clever
music excerptions, all at breakneck speed. Sparse haunting almost lo-fi
raw production that perversely adds to the quality when it really shouldn’t
– odd-edge sounds indeed, organic thought of microcosm and transcendence.
www.furze.net / www.candlelightrecords.co.uk
LITTLE
BARRIE – Stand Your Ground (Gen) They have me a little more interested
now, still sitting on the fence, but hey, at least they got me interested
enough to climb up on that fence and watch now, last time I saw them I
walked away. I don’t know, are they the real deal? This follow up to their
“critically acclaimed” debut then (nice looking package as well, shiny
shiny gold disc). Their sound is a little more immediate now, a little
more lean, taut. I don’t know though? Do I buy their 60’s flavoured English
jazzy beat rock and various shades of Cramps, Gene Vincent, Yardbirds and
hints of funk? I don’t know, I buy it a little more now than I did with
the debut, I still don’t know though, still doesn’t quite sound natural
labour of love... www.littlebarrie.com

SINGLE
OF THE WEEK 2
FEAR OF MUSIC – We Are Not
The Enemy (Faster) – Stompy, glammy, indie, lush, full-bodied new wave
rich infectious guitar pop with a neat enough dark dynamic edge. A lead
track that’s laced full of cooky hooks and playful blows to the back of
your head (it kinds of reminds me of Pura Vida, bet no one remembers them!).
We Are Not The Enemy has a kind of meaner tough hooligan slant on a sunny
American flavoured Placebo for Horrors fans who like Weezer (Pura Vida
became Carrie and then Little Hell or something or other, the name changes
were something to do with their constant whore like chasing of the man
and that fated major label dream, that was the last century though, this
is now...). Fear Of Music have that classic slightly quirky US new wave
pop sound (that really could be from anywhere in the world). The darker
edge and piano-flavoured bite of A Blueprint is where they really start
to seriously impress and almost get in to dramatic (male fronted) Dresden
Dolls territory in a restrained not quite kind of almost kind of brilliant
way (kind of). I kind of really like this in an all icons losing
their meaning kind of way, yeah (kind of) this second track is how radio
friendly pop kind of really should be – kind of intelligent, laced with
substance, lyrics that open doors and yes yes yes! Sounds like it could
be in their blood stream, b-side of the year (so far) and no perfect world
from no shiny magazine, sign me up, I may soon be a fan if they have more
like this. Ah but but but it is still real cold out so do dress in your
long coat. Track three has a problem then, how can it possible follow the
glory of number two, it doesn’t, still goooooooood though, still very good,
still very very good. I like this band! I’m hooked, they got me, three
tracks and I’m a fan. I get the impression they’re from Manchester, I don’t
know, never heard of them ‘till today (and now my heart races in my chest)
and they will get you in a twist and a tangle and kind of yes! Hang on,
I’ve made like a proper reviewer now and got some actual facts, they’re
from South Manchester, they’re ridiculously young for a band with this
much class and song writing composure, this is very very good, hey, the
sun came out, it was raining, now the sun is out, pass my long coat, watch
the film, dodge the icons – YES! No kind of about it. www.fastermusic.co.uk

message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space
page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a
positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and
underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works
around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews
and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please
do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information.
We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a
little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we
had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going
to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to
do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you
want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s
how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only
a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words,
we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please
tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others
have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things
the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way.
