KEEP ON BUILDING THESE SHIPS... |
And
the survey says bang bang you’re dead, music is a contact sport and freedom
is just another word for nothing left to lose. Black is the absence of
colour said the man on the radio talking about a very white beetle that
will make my paper even whiter and you know who or what. Why the hell don’t
bands get out and gig when you release their music? I don’t understand
bands sometimes. Not that they were going to crush the white beetle, just
learn from the science of the fungus loving thing. Black is my favourite
colour, so much colour in there if you really look and auditions in rubber
gloves, hinges fixed on gates. When did Biffy Clyro turn in to the
Foo Fighters? Oh dear, stoop to feed the crows, some scraps, already cold,
they were never that good but oh dear Biffy foo.. Don’t give me no have-a-go
heroes either, hang on hang on, I got something to say here. We’ve been
doing this Organ thing for far too long now, we’ve seen a million things
come and go, a million people shout the odds and tells how wrong we are
(only to have them come back three years later to tell us how we were right
after all, always so amusing) , it is still all about the excitement and
passion of the really good music that’s out there waiting to be found...
So much good music out there if you can be bothered go find, of course
you could just stick with the ‘outrage’ of those same jeans for four days
now. . |

biscuits, Shawn Wright Phillips in full training kit looking like a shifty
shoplifter kid, that woman with pink hair from Lush.

the upcoming compilation album 'Black Sabbath: The Dio Years'. Is there

NEW WU TANG READY
- The Wu Tang Clan are back with a new studio album, there first since
2001. It is due to come out this summer, via the Universal Music imprint

All nine Clan members appear on the new long player, including the late
Ol Dirty Bastard, who will make a post-humous appearance on one track.
Another track, 'Life Changes', is a tribute to the late rapper, who died
in 2004, of course.
'GIRLS GOT THE BLUES'
is a brand new one day Music event to be held in Manchester on 6th May
2007 celebrating the best in Female fronted bands with an emphasis, but
not exclusively, on blues based music. “This is the 1st event of it's type
to be held in Manchester, possibly the 1st in the UK. All of a sudden there
is a plethora of Girls picking up guitars and rediscovering the musical
heritage that is the Blues, whether it be in the style of the Delta or
more of a Stevie Ray Vaughan vibe, and following right the way through
to Country blues. 'Girls Got The Blues' stated aim is to highlight and
showcase this amazing talent. We hope this will become an annual
event”

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE,

DEADLEE
ANNOUNCES GAY HIP HOP TOUR - LA based rapper Deadlee, unusual in the hip
hop community by being openly gay, has announced he will headline what
he reckons is the first ever hip hop tour featuring exclusively gay, lesbian
or bisexual artists. Going by the name HomoRevolution Tour, Deadlee, real
name Joseph Lee, hopes the venture might change opinions within a community
traditionally perceived as being pretty homophobic.
Lee
told AllHipHop.com: "The HomoRevolution
Tour is a direct challenge to the old status quo in hip hop. Times are
changing and if openly gay rappers aren't invited then we are kicking the
door in - and inviting ourselves... we are taking the mic. It's our turn
too".
Possibly
in a bid to ensure column inches for the tour, Lee has been dissing some
of the hip hop genre's biggest names for their past homophobia (which is
probably justified) while publicly questioning their sexuality (probably
less so). Lee: "Eminem was called out for his juvenile, hateful approach
to homosexuality, especially in his song 'Criminal. He was the biggest
rapper at the time and if he used the same song as a diss to Blacks or
Latinos, he would probably be dead. Eminem likes to pick on the 'weak'
but gay[z] ain’t weak and he might be a fag himself. He knew all the subcultures
in that song".
Meanwhile
on 50 Cent, who once told Playboy "I don't like gay people around me, because
I'm not comfortable with what their thoughts are", Lee continued: "Fuck
him. I don't like ignorant bitches around me, so he can suck my gun. He
is a classic man who had homo-feelings and chooses to lash out because
he is afraid he might act out on his true feelings. 50 Cent has deep rooted
homosexual tendencies". (CMU)
The
HomoRevolution Tour kicks off in San Diego on 29 Mar.

DEMO TIME |
Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos,
we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more
time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective,
when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
FOUR
LETTER FRIEND – Four And Twenty Blackbirds - You know, this may sound like
the laziest of lazy lists (the sort you read in a million substandard reviews
written by wannabe NME student journos drowning in their own festering
sound) another of those damn lists that tiresome small-time bands try and
throw at us via their tedious biogs or their uninspiring My Space pages
- this may sound like just another lazy list, and hey, nobody likes a freak
with another list and bloody hands are made for shaking, this is not just
a pastime and someone has to realise there’s another side to see.
Whisper
it about, let rumours rise and fall, we know what this is all about, even
if you can’t see it yet, choose life and high velocity for this time around
Four Letter Friend really do manage to sound like Soundgarden and Radiohead
both at the same time and not only that, they manage to put it off completely.
A massive Queens Of The Stone Age sound, that modern heavy rock thing,
big and brooding and full of swagger, alive with knowing confidence, a
sound that bursts right in and demands undivided attention. There’s a million
bands out there who’ll claim they sound like this, a million goodhearted
small time (hobby) bands briefly living the dream, they’ll peak with a
third on the bill on a Tuesday night in rainy Camden - to which they’ll
bring a coach load of their mates to cheer them on and no one from London
will even notice they and their noisy mates came and went (besides the
promoter and the barman with the money from the night, “can you bring a
coach? Yeah, great, we’ll book you, yeah, the guy from Kerrang is always
in and the record companies, yeah yeah, bring fans and that will impress
them) strictly third division at best, bands trying to sound vaguely like
their record collections - dead bands walking so put all your guns away,
no need to be wasting good bullets on them.
Four
Letter Friend (from London) have a sound and style (and indeed an attitude)
that suggests they may well have what it takes to be a name on the list
of others. Of course we haven’t seen them live, and I have nothing to go
on but these four extremely well recorded impressive tracks and words about
good demos have a habit of turning around and kicking you in the teeth
when you get along to a gig – hang on though it isn’t just me, others have
come in to ask who I’m listening too, coming in with words about subtle
bits of math rock and Made In Mexico and Arab On Radar, and how Four Letter
Friend sound like they’re from some vast canyon in America. Four Letter
Friend are already miles ahead of the hobby bands, the imitators and the
wannabes, they’re already shaping up for some giant killing and they could
well be in the big league very soon (if they can back this up live and
they can back it up with more material as strong as these four slices).

HERZOGA
– This is good toooooooo, we are now officially on a roll, we are motoring
this cold sunny Thursday morning, we are we are we are, we’ve done with
undercover, contact and switch the other. “We’re a powerful ‘wrong pop’
trio from Stoke” say Herzoga, and indeed they are, straight out of the
Potteries with some rather sharp wrong pop. “What is wrong pop mummy?”
“I don’t know sonny boy, eat your greens and sit home on your sofa in the
house and watch some TV sport”. Waiting, waiting, wrong pop sounds good
– clever, quirky in a moody new wave brooding smoldering kind of way, Taking
Heads without getting all wacky and look at us aren’t we arty about it.

DEATHSTAR
PREVIEW – They sound (and look) like they’d fit in perfectly with the current
crop of glossy magazine radio/video channel emo/indie/pretty boy American
pop rock indie disco pop-rock bands, you know the ones I mean, those band
like The Thingies or The Whoever hthey're called or... They’re actually
from London. Heavy bass lines and tailored hair, synth crunch and infectious
bite, The Cure meets some Emo poop or other and if they get the breaks
they could be neon pink massive (or at least half way up the second stage
at Reading and all over the NME in 2008), I think they’d like us to say
they’re all 21st Century Rock n’ Roll and right, I’m out of here, this
does nothing much for us, they have their sound and their packaging and
everything else together, if it sounds like your thing then they do it
very well indeed and you'd do well to check them out - www.deathstarpreview.com

ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
HOLLY
THROSBY – Under The Town (Woo Me!) - Sometimes something is just so so
right. The sun came out just as the first delicate textures of Holly’s
opening song introduced themselves, it was cold and winter dull, there
was snow and I was falling in to one of those why bother kind of moods.
Then Holly started to sing of millponds and arrows and apple red things,
her music began to glow and the sun came out and the warmth came in. And
now it’s early spring bright and colours are glowing and there’s a lazy
black cat stretched out in the radiant warmth of the morning sun, colours
jumping off her back, this album is just so so right. Under The Town is
a beautiful piece of work, a wonderful collection of songs - glowing torch
songs, sparse songs, beautifully detailed songs, songs to hold you together
when you’re coming undone, songs to put air in your lungs and do what there
is to be done. Holly Throsby is from New South Wales, her songs are sparse
and delicate, they’re clever, and the attention to details brings them
in to so much life. The words jump out and grab, her words delight. Thoughtful
quiet singer songwriter songs orchestrated with the rich detail of piano,
bouzouki, clarinet, cello, violin - strong and alive and crisp. Even
when there’s darkness and the hint of turmoil she’s still full of so much
glowing poignant intimate hope and Davenda Banhart/Viking Moses brightness.
Hope, even in the longing for darkness and the downs and the intimacy,
breathy hope and warmth even in the loss and yearning. Sometimes an album
is just so so right - this is beautiful, perfect, something to wrap yourself
in for months and months. www.hollythrosby.com
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK 2
MINSK
– The Ritual Fires Of Abandonment (Relapse) – According the Wikipedia (and
this handy press release), the Belarusian city of Minsk was formed during
the last Ice Age by water flowing from melting ice caps. “Where there’s
ice there’s fire”. I see why they chose to open the press release
in that way, Wikipedia may as well have been talking about the band and
their profoundly powerful hypnotic sound. Layers of restrained percussion,
banks of slow moving guitars, chanted vocals, shamanistic calls, Mescaline
sunrises, eruptions of molten-hot power, passion, aggression and mostly
brooding brooding brooding rhythm. Sculpted post-rock noise and slowly
uncoiling musical violence, searing slow-motion melodies, spiritual vocal
ruminations. Opening with a thirteen minute forty-eight second slice of
restrained boiling delirium and building on those foundations to take on
whole mountain rides of power and doom and sacred fire rituals, this is
a massive sound. The Ritual is searing and volcanic and thundering
with all kinds of giant erupting magma gushing things. Minsk have delivered
an astonishing album, an album that will have a lasting impact on all who
dare approach it - and if you can stick around with the hypnotic intensity
right the way through to the final fifteen minute epic that is Ceremony
Ex Stasis.... whooooooosh. Seriously heavy, innovatively heavy. www.thesoundofminsk.com

TYPE
O NEGATIVE – Dead Again (SPV) – Seventh studio album and to be brutally
frankly lime flavoured honest about the whole thing, I couldn’t really
give a fig one way or the other about a new Type O release. The new album
(silly title) has been on the pile waiting for attention for a few weeks
now and I finally got around to unenthusiastically throwing it on today.
I was kind of expecting more of the same, well at least the same and they've
been churning out in their own moody gothy way for the latter part of their
productive life. No, hang on! What’s this? Type O are kicking it in a rather
unexpected way, they got a bit of that Brooklyn hardcore back in to their
dark-blooded their veins, hopefully they’re not sinking back in to those
dubious lyrics of the early days, doesn’t sound like they are. Still distinctively
Type O, kind of Danzig flavoured, maybe a bit of Misfits (hey I saw this
great all girl Misfits covers band, Miss Fits – name of the year if you
ask me, better than Cheap Chick don’t you think), I was kind of expecting
another load of moody goth food and Friday 13th horror movie junk, and
yeah there is some of that (and you legions of goths waiting for this are
going to be morbidly happy when you hear it), but hey, there goes a charging
old school Sabbath gallop of a riff and hey, I’m rather impressed.
Type O never sounded so good. Moody goth laced with all kinds of journeys
down side streets when before they kind of stuck to the main roads and
the obvious routes. Plenty of metallic maliciousness and self contemptuous
cynicism, right now they’re sounding blackly psychedelic and Mr Steele
is screaming about his soul being on fire (anyone remember that fine English
band Dreamgrinder?). Epic melancholia and yes, more of that love-weirdness
and right now Pete is getting all mellow and Elton John goes bars and blackness
on us - Pete Steel and his morbid sense of mischief, ... Stop press, Type
O Negative drop great album shock, would three albums of the week be stretching
things? Released in the UK on March 13th. www.typeonegative.com
OBSESSIVE
COMPULSIVE – The Corpse Of Thought (OC) – I’m going to stick this in the
album section, I don’t know, the lines are blurred these days – is it a
six track EP? A very professional looking demo? A mini album? A bird, a
plane? This is an extremely good looking well put together well packaged
six track CD and once again the Manchester band seem to be doing it themselves.
Once again the Manchester band seem to be doing it rather well. Heavier
than last time, meaner, more anger, more everything. This is impressively
good progress, not that they weren’t impressive before. Girl fronted tough
dark-edged powerful colourful (nu) metal (no! come back, ignore that nu
bit or the goth metal thing I really should throw in but won’t in case
you get that wrong idea), Obsessive Compulsive are good, they’re passionate,
they have attitude and they have a lot of class and they get out there
and do it rather than sitting on their arses thinking the world owes them
a break. We like everything about Obsessive Compulsive, they still have
their glammy/punky edge so don’t go getting on your worry beads out. O.C
are probably playing in a town near you any day now, they’re one of the
hardest working bands out there, hey do things right and with this six
tracker they really do demand your attention - www.obsessivecompulsiveband.com
IN
LIARS WE TRUST – In Liars We Trust (Foss Face) – Politically charged angry
question throwing issue flagging old school (proper) punk rock. And damn
fine music as well. They’re from LA, they don’t like their government or
the war on terrorism or the political system or the oil industry, they
don’t like a lot of things (and rightly so). They do like to reach out
and provoke thought and learn and education and communicate and question,
they have a positive outlook. “In Liars We Trust is our outlet to express
how we feel about the current state of affairs through music”. In Liars
are a rather fine female fronted old school Crass/early Vice Squad/Dead
Boys kind of band. Josi from Piss Ants is in there, so is Foss Face himself,
In Liars are a positive creative front line punk band and a positive way
in which to point accusing defiant fingers at the insanity of the system
and those in power. Hey look, they’d be good if they were just singing
about beer, parties and fast cars, they’d be good without the political
statement and the intent, the fact that hay have that anger and intent
just adds to the positive delight – well worth checking out - www.foss-face.com
/ www.myspace.com/inliarswetrust
MORNING
BRIDE – Lea Valley Delta Blues (Letterbox) - Delta blues and finely refined
alt.country from eh.... Hackney, East London. Crafted, potent vocals, two
girls, three boys – oh hang on, the girls are from the North Eastern United
States, the boys from English seaside towns, that makes a little more sense
then. Amity has a gloriously beautiful voice – an angel-voiced front for
the balladeering country quartet. Well worth checking out if alt-country
blues is your thing – www.letterbox.com
/ www.morningbride.co.uk
SEAGULL
STRANGE – Better Angels Of Our Nature (Shifty Disco) – Some kind of big
bold slick indie pop band with a lush synth undercurrent, formed out of
the ashes of some band that got dropped by some major or other, ah sheeeese,
that sounds awfully cynical of me doesn’t it? Yeah it does, and this rabbit
know what’s coming for it, they kind of bring it out in me. I’ve tried
and tried to get in to Seagull Strange, maybe that feeling that they’re
trying tooooooo hard to be “eccentric” stops me connecting with them. Things
somehow don’t quite sound natural. You and me waiting here for love’s sick
disease and the senseless destruction of someone’s magical creation, we’ve
all been there so what’s to tell. Hey look, if you like R.E.M melodies,
Moby’s restraint and sitting here quietly trying to find something good
to say and here it is coming to get yer... Hey look, I really tried, if
you like those 80’s melodies of R.E.M with an edge of eccentric Englishness
then I leave you to go investigate – www.seagullstrange.com
THE
AGENCY – Turn (Perch) - Another one of those bratty American emo singers
who needs to be taken out back and have the My Chemical Romance beaten
out of him. Oh look, members of Dashboard Confessional and Seville, why
do they want to be in side projects that sound just like the bands they’re
in already? Ok I got the facts, The Agency did it first, they split years
ago, they’ve been on and off since ’95, this is their third release, they’re
back again, so what? If you care then they do it as well as any of the
current crop of American (or South Wales) bands, their better moments
- like the rather good indie pop lish/lushness of Found – point towards
jawbreaker or Ben Folds, if any of that interests you then here’s the link
and hey, check your hair, it’s a little out of place there – www.perchrecords.com

THE
FURTHER ADVENTURES OF WEASEL WALTER
Thursday, January 25, 2007
new shit and news
Current mood: chipper
Things don't slow down here.
They can't - we might all be dead tomorrow. Now is the time.
Weasel Walter quartet's "revolt
music" cd still available. Buy it you f**kers! you know you need
it. Coming up next on ugEX is the long feared complete studio recordings
by To Live And Shave In L.A. 2! yes . . . they said it couldn't be done.
well, f**k them - it's out on march 1st, 2007. 78 minutes of insane brutal
prog with an eight page booklet crammed with art, photos and liner notes.
You'll freak. It's LSD made out of plastic. Also out around early march
will be my "early years" comp on savage land. The birth of the brutal,
y'all. This spring will be jam packed with excitement from me. In February
xbxrx heads to Mexico for four shows, then I fly out to the east coast
with bassist Damon Smith for a bunch of shows with folks like Henry Kaiser,
Marshall Allen, Marc Edwards, Lisle Ellis, Elliott Levin, Mario Rechtern,
Marco Eneidi and Mary Halvorson. There will be a shitload of local
gigs in Feb, including one with the massive Marco Eneidi Orchestra and
a guest hit with Mochipet. March will have a few more local ones before
I leave on a 3 week tour with Lair Of The Minotaur of the U.S. totally
metal. April will see the release of the new xbxrx record "wars" on Polyvinyl.
We will be on tour throughout the year and, surprise, I have switched to
bass and Michael, the original "gop" era drummer returns to the fold. Imagine
that? May will be about recovery and maybe some other surprises before
Lair Of The Minotaur leaves for Europe in June. My hope this year is to
get the Weasel Walter Sextet into the studio for a total blowout. A new
Luttenbachers record will hit the shelves this winter, although the DVD
might be on hold for a while due to circumstances beyond my control. whew.
thanks,

OF THE WEEK
GIRL
SCOUT HAND GRENADE – They Want You Sedated So You Never See The Truth (Nuclear
Goat) - Well the label is based North Branch M.I (wherever the hell that
is in the) USA, and the rather violent sounding four piece aren’t big on
information or website urls or contact addresses or band names or indeed
anything, well their CD cover artwork isn’t anyway. Looks like three males
and one female, I don’t know, could be a pretty boy glam fan, I could be
wrong though, what does it matter, dicks or breasts they're al lthe same,
sounds good and the four of them sound like they’d give you or me a good
stomping. Hey look, violent intense brutal violent relentless violent grindcore
violence with a yappy math edge and some colourful Trencher/Locust style
left field noisecore. No idea what he’s yelling and growling about, sounds
rather angry, he’s clearly out of milk and sugar and it’s raining outside
and no one else will go to the corner store. Hang on, he is the she, I
worked it out now, “the acid throat of Tanya”, no, they’re dishing out
twin vocal attack, two lots of yelling and throat ripping Taya is violent
front woman, Mike is guitarists/vocalist and you would not want to live
next to their practice room. I rather like this – experimental, caustic,
brutal and they clearly have an escape plan, I love this! They bring a
little extra all of their own, they have a Medulla Nocte edge to them (that’s
a compliment, a Medulla edge is always a healthy thing). Time for a websearch
and some more Sherlock style fact finding. Opening track Miasma definitely
has a healthy hint of The Locust about it, even more intense though, I’m
liking this lots and lots, nurse get my boots, we’re going in for lots
more. Hang on, I take it all back, there’s all the contact details waiting
for us on the actual disc that was hiding in the player, goddamnit
you bands, there was I searching the CD artwork and cursing your asses.
My feet are cold as well, just where the hell are my boots? Just who is
going to go out and get the milk anyway? Look, I went surfing so you don’t
have to and naturally, just like the rest of the world, they’ve got a My
Space page (and MI is Michigan and you probably knew that already didn’t
you). www.myspace.com/girlscouthandgrenade

CHECK THIS OUT |
| As
always, thanks to SchNEWS
for their alternative news bulletins - www.schnews.org.uk |
Open
message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space
page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a
positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and
underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works
around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews
and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please
do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information.
We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a
little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we
had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going
to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to
do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you
want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s
how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only
a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words,
we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please
tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others
have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things
the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way.
