ORGAN #211 > JUNE 28th 2007 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon
Organ is about the things we encounter each week, simple as that...
Act Art 5What was it? He had no idea. There is only one way to rock. Is television where you still get you information? Oh, wrong page, wrong conspiracy, this thing will not blow over, contact and switch the other, we’re done with under cover and I still need to know who the creature in the red dress was, if you could rely the message that would be good. Organ is about the things we encounter each week, the things we feel are worth you time, effort and mouse manipulation and I’m sure we don’t need to keep explaining ourselves and it is indeed your **** on which we feed, or your fate or your date or the late arrival of your train. Time to make a switch or write another introduction editorial and I can’t wait for that smoking ban to kick in and hair won’t stink anymore and neither will my shirt and neither will my eyes and grand theories bearing no relation to reality or Marxism or no-fault auto insurance or the fate of the people involved or a holiday in hell and one night stands and itchy feet and no limit set upon your mind learning ways of men or mice. Tim Tim Tim, sorry Tim.... and she lost her patience and it was all my fault.
IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME?

Resonance 104.4fm broadcasts a series of live programmes 'A Month of Sundays' from the stage at The Corsica Studios in London every Sunday in July.

We invite our most efferent comedians such as Simon Munnery, sound artists such as David Toop and renowned artist Bob and Roberta Smith (Apathy Band) returning radio to the live theatre. Dexter Bentley presents an open bike night show with the audience as batteries and Jonny Trunk brings his convivial auction to the floor.

The July 1st launch night features acts spread over two rooms. Headlining the night are the male members of The Guillemots, playing a "boulder 'n' roll" set. They are joined on the bill by pastoral laptopper Leafcutter John, vest-clad jazz-punkers Morviscous and melodramatic folk songstress Mary Hampton. There's also a voltaic tape splicing performance by audio magician Sculpture and station manager Chris Weaver delivers a conflux of animate hand-built electronics.

HARRY SMITH ANTHOLOGY REMIXED (featuring visual work by :zoviet*france:)

The alt.gallery launch exhibition, Harry Smith Anthology Remixed, brings together the work of 84 artists and musicians, who have been invited to make a visual artwork in response to one track each from the groundbreaking music release the Anthology of American Folk Music. The Anthology was edited by seminal New York artist, musicologist and experimental film maker Harry Smith, and first published by Folkways in 1952.

The Anthology is comprised entirely of recordings issued between 1927 and 1932. Harry Smith used the new LP technology to create an unbroken sequence of songs, divided into three colour coded sets, which represented three elements: air, fire and water. The Anthology is considered to be one of the most important collections of information in modern society, and has contributed to numerous folk revival movements.

This exhibition aims to create a new visual collection of the Anthology, as seen through the eyes of contemporary visual artists and musicians. It includes artists from Europe, Japan and the USA, reflecting a diverse range of practice including visual art, outsider art, comic book, design and illustration.

The exhibition includes work by: Dave Allen, Jonathan Allen, Diane Barcelowsky, Marcia Bassett, Eric Beltz, Hisham Bharoocha, Jesse Bransford, Vashti Bunyan, Jelle Crama, Jaron Childs, Rob Churm, Marcus Coates, Karen Constance, Christian Cummings, Dearraindrop, Arrington di Dionyso, Graham Dolphin, Bill Drummond, Jorn Ebner, Peter J Evans, Yamataka Eye, Jad Fair, Feathers Family, Kyle Field, Alec Finlay, Devin Flynn, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Luke Fowler, Chris Graham, Susie Green, Doug Harvey, Rama Hoffpauir, Dan Howard-Birt, Zoe Irvine, Rich Jacobs, James Johnson-Perkins and Mat Cowan, Juneau Projects, Seth Kelly, Jeffrey Lewis, Linder, Derek Lodge, Lone Twin, Robert AA Lowe, Ant Macari, The Matinee Orchestra, Maya Miller, Gean Moreno, Heather Leigh Murray, Michael Nyman, Dylan Nyoukis, John Olson, John Orth, Paper Rad, Mike Paré, Plastic Crimewave, Dave Portner, Devin Powers, Adam Putnam, The Rebel, Ginny Reed, Clare E Rojas, Chris Rollen, Arik Roper, Giles Round, Royal Art Lodge, Mathew Sawyer, David Sherry, Brooke Sietinsons, Ross Sinclair, DJ Spooky, Andre Stitt, Philip Taaffe, Vernon & Burns, Daryl Waller, Flora Whiteley, Michael Wilson, Simon Woolham, Andrew Jeffrey Wright, C.  Spencer Yeh, Yokoland, :zoviet*france:.

CRAP ARREST OF THE WEEK

For robbin' the rich... Whilst SchNEWS doesn't generally have a very high opinion of bank managers, in the small town of Tauberfranken, Germany, one example of the species, Peter Taubinger, has broken the mould. Clearly overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the bank-induced social injustice all around him, he set about taking direct action by nicking £1.5 million quid from rich customers' accounts - and started redistributing it into the overdrafts of more deserving punters like single mothers, pensioners, and those unable to work due to ill health!

It's no good playing Robin Hood if you grass yourself up though and it all came to an end after Pete turned himself in, realising he couldn't hide what he'd done. Receiving a 34 month jail sentence he has at least set a tremendous example to banks and their bands of merrymen everywhere!

DEMO TIME
Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood

DEMO OF THE WEEK
ONSEGEN ENSEMBLE – Hottoizzoh (Hell Fi) – Now this is rather special, flowing old school proper prog (none of this neo wimp-out politeness). Prog with a driving heart and an undercurrent of locked on fusion. Warm, organic, analogue flavoured and sounding like a long lost treasure from1973 (yes that good!). Three tracks, two throbbing pulsing instrumentals and a middle track sung warmly in what I guess is Finnish by the feminine voice of Alisa Saila. Think King Crimson, Jazzy Gong, Acid Mother Temple and even Magma... A surging space-jazz flavoured art/prog rock set of treats. A whole roller-coaster ride of glorious progressive colour from deepest Finland, excellent – www.myspace.com/onsegen

ALSO CHECK OUT
SEA ON FIRE  – Ambitiously epic sounding restrained dramatic smouldering big-rock of a healthy left-field Soundgarden/Smashing Pumpkins nature. A new London based band fronted by a man called David, the one time voice of Tense (and before that Pipedream). Four dark moody slightly psychedelic tracks that you can investigate over at www.myspace.com/seaonfirebandsite

'NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK
This week we’ve been listening to...

ALBUM OF THE WEEK
TWO BANDS AND A LEGEND – Featuring Cato Salsa Experience and The Thing (Smalltown Superjazz) – Now if you’ve been paying full attention you’ll know we’ve been playing the hell out of this FM radio friendly set of easy listing treats on our easy on the ear Resonance FM show. This is indeed the shit my friends – this is the shit! Messed up feedback-drenched free-form blues and garage-noise. Jazz as violence - insane horns and honking sax, intense guitar, ridiculously tight bass and drums - this rocks the fuggin! fuck right the f out – there is no other option that the option of profanity with this beautifully glorious noise fest of an album. Some kind of meeting involving two rather out there bands – The Thing and Cato Salsa Experience – the filthiest sax sound this side of a fuzzed out Van Der Graaf Generator walking barefoot over hot coals and broken lighthouse keepers glass. An insanely raw version of PJ Harvey’s What The Fuck that renders the original (almost) redundant. An album that sees the perfect pairing and blending of the dirty 60’s flavoured free jazz of The Thing and the raw progressive garage rock of Cato Salsa Experience – recorded pretty much live in one insane take. Their preposterously avant version of Louie Louie has to be heard to be believed, especially the remarkable way they return half way through the jam to the original riff, check the way it bleeds out of the speakers   - and check Thursdon Moore’s sleeve notes, we are not alone in declaring this a garage-jazz-noise masterpiece. “Is this superjazz? Yyyyyyyesssssssss!!!” said Thurston,  YEEEEEEEEESSSSS say us!! – What the F?! The glorious art of noise - www.smalltownsuperjazz.com

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 2
ANEKDOTEN – A Time Of Day (Virta)  - Sweden’s Anekdoten have always been kind of out there on their own - launching deep in to the great unknown, space and time passing by, swallowed whole by the starless (and bible black) sky. Embraced by the real proghead underground simply because they’re happy to embrace all that is good about classic seventies prog rock. Previous albums have been glorious in a very King Crimson/Van Der Graaf way, Anekdoten are now taking those elements to places very much of their own making. Anekdoten are now rewardingly different. Powered by the heavenly glow of those gloriously gentle Mellotrons (yes plural, they have two of the wonderous beasts - double the aaaaaaahhhhhhh). A sound that gently reverberates in a rich restrained Van Der Graaf Generator meets Can manner - golden, restrained, something warm and beautiful, a rich sounds you can almost reach out in to the air and touch. Folky at times, very psychedelic (never obvious though), a hint or two the mellow restrained quiet side of Led Zeppelin, flavours of Caravan, Soft Machine.  Eight fine compact (compact in terms of prog rock anyway) tracks, turn that key in the door, it has been a long time coming, Anekdoten do things their own way. Glorious ambitious Seventies flavoured prog rock that has an almost alt-rock undercurrent – early REM, The Church, the more refined shoegaizer bands – Chapterhouse, Cocteau Twins, Slowdive. Anekdoten are a special band, A Time of Day retains all the goodness of their previous releases, far less obvious now, far more refined, their finest album so far. Glorious grandiose (proper) prog rock.  www.anekdoten.se

ALSO CHECK OUT
DJ MAYONNAISE – Still Alive (Anticon) – “File under beat driven electronica” says the accompanying piece of paper, “for fans of Fourtet, Alias, Tortoise, Sneaker Pimps, Sage Francis, Boards Of Canada...”  Yeah, that’s the short version, all we need to tell you now is that it has some X factor, that finger print of unique identity and comes rather highly recommended – I mean you know Anticon always deliver right? Just save yourself time and buy everything they ever release. You want more? Oh come on...  DJ Mayo has returned with a fine follow up to 55 Stories – the sublime master of the mellow sample and the left field beat is back with more intelligent inspiring composition and refined musical collage – alive with  subtle details and glowing with quiet restrained mellow rainy-day beauty (yes, it is a rainy day again). Warm easy on the ear trip-hop-ish electo mind-massage, instrumental electronic pop occasionally laced with clever spoken word sound bites and subtle hip-hop interludes. Atmospheric, jazzy, perfectly American, refreshing, relaxing and just right. Recommended – hit the links and discover for yourselves, so much good music around if you go look for it – www.anticon.comwww.myspace.com/djmayonnaise

DEKAPITATOR – The Storm Before The Calm (Relapse) – With a name like that you just know they’re either going to be brilliant or utterly dreadful don’t you! Dekapitator are a classic Bay Area thrash metal throwback – (early) Metallica, (early) Exodus, (early) Anthrax, (early) Testament, bit of a punky edge to it, regulation death grunt that you knew was coming, speed metal guitar solo delivered with attitude – yes! Death Strike Command! Death to false metal, FOAD, wooooaaggghhhhhhhhhh, metal up your ass, Rip crunching metal, massive devastation, kiss your ass goodbye! You knew they’d have to be good to pull off having a name like that! A whole pile of shit, blood and bones – proper thrash metal! “Dekapitator started as an idea between Matt Hellfiend, Dan Bulldoze and Andy Maniac, their vinyl collections growing alongside their distaste for modern metal...”. With a name like that you just know they’re either going to be brilliant or utterly dreadful didn’t you! - www.myspace.com/dekapitator or www.dekapitator.com

BEATNIK FILMSTARS – Sheneniganism – Tape Hiss & Other Imperfection (International lo-fi Underground) – New album, limited edition of 500 all in hand drawn CD sleeves, more importantly though, new material from the respected cult English alternative pop band from Bristol. Back in full swing now then and although they’ve been around for years and years (and years), still it seems a well kept secret. Hey look, a band good enough to be invited back to record sessions on no less than five occasions by John Peel, a band who’ve been called the English Guided By Voices, a band who should be right up there in terms of respect with The Fall and The Wedding Present 9they certainly are in our book). Lo-Fi, not that lo-fi means low quality, lo-fi recording aesthetic, high quality control (despite their self effacing hand written put-down notes). Infectious lo-fi brit pop (real brit pop, not some Kinks/Beatles rinky-dinky re-hash) laced with Casiotone-like details and bright-light fizzing noise, laces with little trumpet details and most importantly real songs. Clever songs, simple songs put aside for the likes of you. There’s no one quite like these Beatnik Filmstars, this time around they seem a little more relaxed, they’ve taking a few days off from all that raging against the music machine and the attack of the clones. Triumphantly good English lo-fi pop, are the Beatnik Filmstars finally enjoying themselves? www.beatnikfilmstars.co.uk / www.myspace.com/internationallofiunderground

MIDNIGHT CONFIGURATION – Parallel Worlds (Nightbreed) – Pulsing darkwave elctrogoth darkness - pounding blackness and another album from the respected underground cult English band. Sinister slabs of sheet metal and underhand seduction for those who like it on the darkest black side of life. The goths and electro darkwave creatures will be more than happy – www.churchofnightbreed.com

PIG DESTROYER – Phantom Limb (Relapse) – Boiled-down no messing stripped right to the bone extreme metal intensity. Stark, violent relentless pummelling thrash and grind – no interest in being clever or different, just straight in your face and never getting out again, you’ll crack before they do – violent human animal music.  www.myspace.com/therealpigdestroyer

3 INCHES OF BLOOD – Fire Up The Blades (Roadrunner) – Fresh line up, fear not though, the aesthetic is still the same, this is M-E-T-A-L! The Canadians are on top top screaming pounding old school sword waving Ravenesque form. Harmonised Maiden style guitars and all proper Manowar, Maiden, Anvil style top quality metal. www.3inchesofblood.com

MONSTERWORKS –Spacial Operations  - Some kind of ambitiously overblown  relentlessly intense progressive metal concept album – hystrionic vocals and screaming solos lace with bombastic melody and throwing the kitchen sink right at your head. Hey look, I can’t stand Queensryche (got trapped at one their gigs once, it was a tedious hellfiend of a boring night that i thought would never end). Trivium surely must be a comedy act and Dragonforce too silly to actually be funny.  Monsterworks and their stew and slew of screaming technical-thrash and screaming guitar progressive metal are not my thing,  they have to be admired though, defiantly ploughing their own furrow and doing their chosen thing, it has to be said, really rather impressively well (just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean I can’t be respectfully impressed by it now does it). And they’re given the album away free, go explore the website to find out more – they do their thing very very well. Catch Monsterworks at the born again all new Intrepid Fox in central London on Thursday July 8th (St Giles Street, just down the end of Denmark Street, over the road from the Astoria). SINGLE OF THE WEEK
FRAN RODGERS – I fell To You Under Winter Sun (On The Bone) – warm delicate restrained sublime mellow heart-warming gorgeously emotional delicate folk favoured half English/half French chanteuse Fran Rodgers with a Sandy Denny/Nick Drake flavoured three track debut solo single. Simple, glowing, beautiful, timeless, strong, angelic, enticing, seductive... perfect. www.franrodgers.co.uk / www.onthebonerecords.com

DDD –Trojan Horse (White Heat) – Some kind of rushing stabbing new wave-ish elcctro-lashing frantic staccato thing for the Franz fans who like it a little edgy. Kind of thundering yet pin-point precise and laced with a certain paranoia and we’re left with the impression that they’d like to think they’re a lot more musically radical than they really are – not bad. www.whiteheatrecords.com

'RE-ISSUE OF THE WEEK

Ah...

PREVIOUSLY - OMD

MEDIA, VIDEO, PRINT AND.... A
SPIRITWO videoeyes DVD: SAMMY AND THE WABOS – LIVING IT UP IN ST.LOUIS (Cabowabo) – Now it probably isn’t too cool to come right out and admit in public that you actually like Sammy Hagar – Sammy Hagar is cool! There, I’m out and proud, the red man rocks!  OK, so we don’t want to look too closely at the dubious Nugentesque politics and we’ll quietly brush over the Van Halen years and pretend they didn’t actually happen. The idea of Van Halen without Dave Lee Roth was just stupid and Sammy Hagar always did have the better back catalogue. Sammy Hagar singing Jump or Space Station Number Five? No contest! Ah yes, the Red Rocker was always wasted in Van Halen. Why is he called the Red Rocker anyway? Closet commie? Nah, Sammy is the original all American rocker, no witch hunt needed here. In terms of classic American hard rock has there ever been anyone better? And has there been a better live rock album that Loud And Clear?  OK, so everyone else around here is moaning like hell about my constant playing of this “dumbass no brain American radio rock bullshit”. Heathens! Have they not heard Montrose? Sammy Hagar always has rocked!
Let’s cut to the chase here, and no obeying the speed limit either, no driving 55 around these parts, it is after all just mental masturbation (what does that mean Sammy?). Like we keep on saying, DVDs are for the already converted – and what the already converted want to know here is, is the DVD actually any damn good? I mean how many times have you been bored to death watching a dull DVD of a band you like? Music is for listening not watching, most live DVDs are boring. Hell yeah, this one rawks! Excellent actually. Well shot, well edited – cuts that linger long enough for you to actually focus. Why do so many live concerts look like they were edited by an epileptic gibbon, quick, let’s have another cut, heaven forbid the viewer’s eyes should actually have time to focus on an image. Clever viewer-freindly multi camera shoot, filmed very well in an excellent outdoor area during a wonderful sunset that looks like an extension of the very very colourful carnival style stage set – confetti guns and giant tequila worms everyehere. Good band he’s got together as well, great performance - we can almost forgive those harmonies on One Way To Rock (almost! Those harmonies are so wrong, there is only one way to sing One Way!). Turning Fight For Your Right in to an AOR rock song is a remarkable achievement, alright so there’s a few old classics missing, good set though. This is one big colourful Cabo party of a rocking gig (audience are a little polite though, what’s going on there?). Great live show, Sammy Hagar and his band on top form, loads of extras – videos, interviews and such – actually I haven’t bothered with the interviews – great gig, great band, there’s only one way to rock - www.redrocker.com / www.cabowabo.com

What's On? Check out our Party and Protest guide at www.schnews.org.uk/pap/guide.htm - it's updated every week, has sections on regular events, local events, protest camps and more...

As always, thanks to SchNEWS for their alternative news bulletins - www.schnews.org.uk

Open message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information. We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words, we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way.
