ORGAN #212 > JULY 5th 2007 - new issue on line every Thursday afternoon
Organ is about the good things we encounter each week, simple as that...
Got to keep it together and walk this trapeze, can’t you see what you have done?

ORG-AN-ISED SINGLE number 33 is out on the loose, a four track splitter from two fresh new bands. Herzoga are a self confessed Wrong Pop set of clayheads from deepest Stoke On Trent, To The Bones are an explosive set of contradictions from Bolton, both bands sent rather impressive demos in to us and so bang, here they are. And just because we can and we want to and this is after all DIY and actually walking it rather than just talking it, along with the four main tracks you get a bonus 12 tracks and over one hour of fine fine underground independent music, 12 hidden extra bonus tracks from like-minded bands and people on the same creative/musical/diy wavelength and all for the sake of clarity and the twisted crowman and racing through the city lights and I can change, you can change, everything stays the same. The whole thing is yours, all sixteen tracks and over one hour of music for just two pounds. Real D.I.Y, Organ style...

ALIVE & KICKING - This weekend, the TVs will be alive to the sound of second-rate popstars jetting in from around the globe in an attempt to save their flagging careers as well as the flagging state of the planet. But the big commercial souled-out Live Earth concerts aren't the only available way to enjoy music and concentrate the mind on eco-issues. A grassroots alternative way of holding a concert has been organised by charity COIN,  the Climate Outreach Information Network, who have set up a open web site where artists can submit their more genuine anti-ecogedden material. Acts signed up so far include Seize the Day,  David Rovics and a range of punk / folk / ska-ists  and various satire-istas all venting their spleen at climate chaotic behaviour. To check it out, turn up the volume and see www.aliveearth.org

IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME?
MEAT PUPPETS are set to release a new studio album, 'Rise To Your Knees', following their 2006 reunion. The LP is out on 23 July via Anodyne Records

THE SHOREDITCH FREE MUSIC FESTIVAL is happening in August, featuring loads of people including Har Mar Superstar, The Paddingtons, The Whip, Man Like Me, Shy Child and The Rakes. The 1234 Shoreditch Free Music Festival at Shoreditch Park in deepest London on 5th Aug. It's free, as the name suggests, go take a look - www.myspace.com/1234records.

SUMMER OF 69 - Following the eviction of the Youth House (Ungdomshuset) in Copenhagen which lead to much rioting but not much success for the residents (see Schnews 579), the anarcho-squatters have got their first real six string (stole it from the five and dime) and decided to make the whole city their home - with an open invite for EVERYBODY to join them! How's that for thinking  outside the box?

When the State moved in and took the House after two days of fighting in March, they thought they had stamped out the bugs for good. Little did they realise they only turned the whole city into a "free zone", with activists spread out and popping up everywhere. The plan is to hit the city where it hurts and demand a new Free Space.  Tourism is a big part of the city's economy and is also very sensitive to  disruption. A spanking new hostel is being built in Christiania - the long established squat town on the city outskirts (see SchNEWS 513) - to house people arriving to join in the (good natured) chaos during the newly christened 'Summer of 69'*. Their general invite reads "Let's show them that tourism is not about money, but about visiting our European neighbours and having a blast". Indeed.

* No, they're not Bryan Adams fans - 69 refers to the street number of the evicted Youth Houseand standing on your mammas porch and you knew that it was now or never and those were the best days of your life

THINGS TO GET SHOUTING  ABOUT?
SITES FOR SORE EYES - At the Hill Of Tara, where they are fighting the building of a motorway near important archaeological sites in Ireland the battle became more intense after a huge ancient monument near Baronstown was razed to the ground by machinery this week. The site, which had been recommended for National Monument status by archaeologists, is one of over 30 important known historic sites in the path of the road (and more are being discovered during the roadworks). There is a permanent protest camp at the frontline of the destruction. See www.savetara.com & www.tarawatch.org

John on the phone...
Part 33 of the ORG-AN-ISED SINGLES SERIES is a split single featuring HERZOGA and TO THE BONES. Herzoga are from Stoke, self confessed makers of “wrong pop”, To The Bones are an urgent alternative guitar band from Bolton (haven't we said all this once already?). Both bands have had Demo Of The Week reviews on these Organ pages in recent weeks. The single will  feature two tracks from each band and a whole loads of bonus extras just because we can, The single is released on July 9th, as with all the single series releases, cost is a mere £2.00 (inc P&P in the UK for those who wish to mailorder rather than buy it in a shop or at a gig...). That's about an hour's worth of exciting cutting edge genre defying music for just two quid The single is a limited edition of 1000 (as all ORG-AN-ISED SINGLES are).

What's it all about? Simple, just good music, and the art of good video making...  Same musical policy as we've always had with Organ - the labels are just handy signposts, as long as the music and video making has that X factor - expect a healthy eye/earboiling mix of metal, punk, prog, beats, post rock, post punk, post man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever..... music and creativity for the open minded

Want to get your video on? Well all you need to do is make us aware of what you have, send us a link to your video on MySpace or You Tube or wherever, or a VHS or a DVD and if you have something that we want to broadcast then we'll chase you for a master broadcast format and wallop, sorted
DEMO TIME
Like we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood

DEMO OF THE WEEK
THE APPLES – Two really good songs, one of them – This Could Easily Happen – rather exceptional in a rather mellow understated way. Kind of refined easy Tom Petty dreamy easy listening pop, maybe a little Beatles in there influencing things. The Apples are from Yekaterinburg, apparently Russia’s third biggest city, The Apples in truth could be from anywhere. What we have here are a couple of really nice pleasant well written enjoyable uplifting simple songs. They’re over here in London and Liverpool in August no doubt searching for those streets paved with gold, song writing like this deserves a break... Contact S. Ukhanov, 13-27 Ultsa Vali Kotika, Yekaterinburg, Russia, 620017.

'NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK
This week we’ve been listening to...

ALBUM OF THE WEEK
LASSE MARHAUG – Alive: Live Recordings 1998-2006 (Smalltown Superjazz) - Eight tracks in, I need a break, I think I’m eight tracks in, things are a little blurred and rather fractured now, it seems like hours already, this is seriously seriously hard-boiled avant head-messing, it is indeed a fine line between art and mere fractured violent bloody-minded confrontational noise. This is either an unlistenable challenging designed to drive you over the edge or a beautiful caress of gloriously corrosive noise art. This is difficulty good. I love it (I suspect I may well be in an insane minority). Norwegian Lasse Marhaug has been working within the fields of noise-music for over 15 years now, he has a reputation both as a solo artist and as a member of Jazzkammer (Jazkamer). Merhaug has also collaborated with noise artists such as Sunn o))), Merzbow, Mats Gustafsson, as well as dipping a toe or two in to the world of extreme black metal – the man is a respected noise artist. Apparently this live album deliberately carries the same name as the classic Kiss live album. A selection of live recordings that may well make ears bleed, he’s certainly sent shockwaves through unsuspecting audiences, not sure if I’d actually like to be there in the flesh without the luxury of a pause button. We’re talking corrosive feedback, screaming low end rumble, violent electronic hum jarring against pained reverb and spiraling spiteful spitting currents and arcs of sonic analogue god knows what. Angles that contradict, obtuse violence, everything on eleven, noise upon layer of hard boiled instrumental eyeball popping noise and for some reason it all makes perfectly rationale reasonable beautiful enjoyable challenging rewarding sense. The art of noise never felt so right. www.lassemarhung.no or www.smalltownsuperjazzz.com

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 2
MOTORHEAD – Better Motorhead Than Dead – Live At Hammersmith (SPV) - Of course it should say live at Hammersmith Odeon on the front, we know the real name of the place we were all at that night. Motorhead’s 2005 30th anniversary concert and just what the hell have we got left to say about the national institution that is Sir Lemmy and the best damn band on the planet. A double live 23 track CD set, the full show laced with classics old and new. Motorhead sounding as good for your ears, hearts and minds as they ever have. Shut up you talk too loud – you either love ‘em or you’ve got no class – too late, you’re way out of line.  Hey, look, those of you who pay proper attention to things that go on around these Organic part know the score when it comes to Motorhead. This gig was the band on top form (could have done without all the Phil Campbell who’s the loudest crowd panto crap on the night but hey...), the album documents all that went down that night – including a fine version of I Got Mine – another perfect day indeed. So, another lie album then, you either want it or you don't. If you do then all you really need to know is yes, good recording, they nailed down the night on CD, great set list, good packaging, everything louder than everything else, as good as any Motorhead live album you already have (why was No Sleep just a single album anyway?) I got mine have you got yours? Right now, right here, 23 classic motorbombs and all ending up with a very very ast version of the national anthem that is Overkill – did they have a train to catch or something? Motorhead then, no sign of them slowing down yet – good, now leave me along while I turn it up and attend to the neighbour's lawn.  www.imotorhead.com

ALSO CHECK OUT
BANG BANG – The Dirt That Makes You Drown (Morphius) - So Chicago’s rather fine Bang Bang mutated again, mutate and survive and two, four, six, eight, see you later alligator... More urgent new wave garage like it could be 1982 and Devo rule the world and Richard Hell fronts The Knack or maybe The Cramps only it really is 2007 and this sounds fresh in a timeless US garage punkrawk kind of way. They’ve all this soul and attitude in there with the new wave fizz and the yeah yeah yeah strut and yes indeed, only the strong survive. www.bangbangband.com

THE ORB – Orbsessions Volume Two (Malicious Gossip) – More unreleased material from the ORB vaults and those re-assuring beats and lines of bubbling dub that fit in to such a defining place and time. Not sure why these tracks from the vaults didn’t see the light of day at their time of creation, this collection is up to the usual standard of Orbness. That blissed out melding of ambient techno/house, blending of natural sounds and spoken word, those trademark heavy dub lines and those constantly shifting beats. The Orb are re-assuringly good to hear. www.maliciousdamage.co.uk

HED(P.E.) – Insomnia (Suburban Noise) – They almost sound retro in 2007, still cynically smiling and raging against whatever machine you got with their mix of energetic soul-edged American rapcore, aggressive nu metal, hip hip confrontation and X-rated funk. Lot of cussing and what sounds like it could be sexist nonsense or maybe just throw away dick-in-hand dumbass party punk. Sounds like they want to get stoned and ball with you one minute and bring the system down with you next – lot of political anger here, plenty of wake up call raging. I guess they’ve stuck to their guns and kept to their path while a thousand Limp Bizkit trend sniffers have jumped off the ride now the shallow media isn’t spoon feeding them out as this week’s flavour. I guess they’re doing their thing as well as ever, actually probably better than ever. For you rage heads and bad brains – and just when you’re think, hell yeah I’m with you Hed, let’s bring down the whole lot, time for revolution, they slip in to the sub Snoopjayblingboy sexist small-dicked rap-crap again – what a schitzoid confusion of a band, I don’t really know how I feel about this. www.hedchop.com / www.suburbannoizerecords.com

ARTHUR & YU – In Camera (Memphis Industries) – In which Seattle’s own Arthur and Yu (real names Grant Olsen and Sonya Westcoft) make some fluid and creamy, rather tranquil, easy listening lo-fi sixties psychedelic alt.pop Americana that kind of feels like the experiments of Lee Hazlewood. Soft and easy and drifting. www.myspace.com/arthurandyu

DECADENCE WITHIN – Reflections (Boss Tuneage) – Double CD set of demos and unreleased tracks, 49 of ‘em, from one of the mainstays of the UK late 80’s/early 90’s DIY driven hardcore anarcho punk scene. Sounds a little dated and rather messy and just maybe a little naive now in these far more cynical far more corporate times we find ourselves wading in. Rather nostalgic and I wonder where all those people all went? www.bosstuneage.com

BEASTIE BOYS – The Mix Up (Capitol)  - The Beastie’s go instrumental, I guess they can if they want to. A very mellow album, a collection of groove and funk and analogue buzz and Farfisa/Clavinet fizz and all very nice and mellow and sounding like the soundtrack to a million over-slick mobile phone adverts and Channel 4 idents. All very pleasant and funky and retro and coffee table trendy bar bottled beer with a slice of lime fashionable and you know if the Beastie Boys are going to do something like this then they’re going to do it well enough. Next please... www.beastieboys.com

SKIMMER – I’ll Tell You What (Boss Tunage) – They’ve been around for years with their punk pop, something like 13 years (and back before that half of them were in The Sect, a band from Birmingham who back in the day got a lot of Organ coverage and such). This is standard issue melodic harmonised (slightly off key) Ramones/Mega City 4 flavoured punk pop, here’s the link if you want it, cutting corners off won’t stop us, have a nice day now -  www.bosstuneage.com

SINGLE OF THE WEEK
TRUCKDRIVER JNR – And You’d Burst into Fire... Forever (We Like Danger) - Five scathing challenging tracks (six if we count the intro), intense metal-edged noise rock with a jagged alternative grungy post-hardcore edge to it. They’re from Leek (Staffordshire) and they’re certainly not interested in taking the obvious route, good a new band with a debut EP on a new label and showing some kind of need to become than just a summing up of their record collection. This is intense, epic, hard boiled where it needs to be, they’re not afraid to play with the dynamics of quiet and unconventional song lengths are not a problem, neither is galloping straight at your head with a punch or two of full on metal violence, chargers indeed.  Something good kicking off here both in terms of the label and the band. A damn fine start, we look forward to more from both parties, we like danger - www.myspace.com/truckdriverjnr or www.myspace.com/welikedanger

Open message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information. We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words, we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way.
