ONE'S FOR KELLY |
Did
you miss us last week? Of course you did. Where were we? None of your damn
business, what about this weather eh? Ducks mate, bleedin’ ducks, crunch
crunch, those fish have teeth, it is indeed pure reason for revolution
and throwing bombs with Louis Lingg. Check your anarchist history – org-an-archy,
fly them black flags high and crash everything down, drown in real something
or other. Anyway Kelly was always the coolest, they were all cool, Kelly
was the coolest
.
Kelly was always the coolest.
You see, back before Riot Grrl and back before the fury of Hole and the
scream Babes In Toyland, the attitude of L7 and confrontation of Tribe
8 there was no real proper girl rock bands – sure there was the occasional
band that seemed a little manufactured and gimmicky, there were a few punky
new wave bands but there were no really greasy T-shirt and jeans, fuck
you, loud, full-on, stamp-on-your-toes-and-spit-in-your-face rock bands
just up there and doing it all on their own terms – besides Girlschool
that is. Girlschool came scratching and biting out of London punk/pub scene
right at the end of the 70’s and racing with the devil right in to the
middle of the NWOBHM with their independent singles. They were like Motorhead’s
tough little sisters, you did not mess, they looked like they could take
on anyone – c’mon let’s go! Kim, Denise, Enid and Kelly and their no messing
metal, delivered with no thrills and a real attitude. Motorhead took them
under their wing and out on a tour or two, Girlschool were easily good
enough to handle the full on philthy animal that was a Motorhead audience
back in the times of Overkill and gigs like the Roundhouse full of rucking
Angels and Damned fans. Those first two Girschool albums and handful of
singles were brilliant – raw no messing street metal delivered with a London
punk rock attitude, the blueprint for bands like L7. Yeah, it all went
off course somewhere there after Screaming Blue Murder when label pressure
and managers got too involved and image became an issue, hair metal started
infringing and it all lost direction. Back there for a glorious two or
three years, in ’79 and the start of the 80’s Girlschool were right up
there challenging Motorhead for the tittle of coolest band in the world,
they had a big following of their own (the original Barmy Army) and I guess
their highlight was headlining the Reading Festival in 1981. Kelly Quit
the band after the not so hot forth album Play Dirty and with her went
a lot of the magic of Girlschool. She did rejoin in the 90’s, it was all
a little messy though and illness forced her to quit again in 2000. Girlschool
are still going strong, they’re out on tour now with most of the original
line up, indeed last we saw them (opening for Motorhead again a couple
of years ago in Brixton) they were sounding damn good again, back to their
roots, not quite the same though, couldn’t really be, and anyway Kelly
was always the coolest.... And so last weekend Kelly Johnson finally lost
her battle with Cancer and passed away, damn, life can be annoying sometime... |
IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME? |
TO
THE BONES can be caught live in the North West of England at Wigan
Tavern on 2nd August, at the Leverhulme festival in Bolton on 4th August
(on the mainstage, time not known right now), then they hit the road to
share stages with DEATH OF LONDON (who in turn are some ex Team people
and have a track featured as one of the bonus treats on the HER/BONES single
– that’s tight, we’re getting lazy in the ORG office now, we’re down to
the short hand of Herbones, things to say you see). Death Of London and
To The Bones play The Varsity, Bolton on August 9th, The Criterion, Leicester
10th August, The Sunshine Lounge, Birmingham 11th August. TO THE BONES
are already hard at work on the follow up release to their ORG split single,
expect it at the end of August on Bolton’s on Repeater Records (home of
other fine Bolton bands like those scuzzy punks The Kiss Offs, and Bookstore
– they play loud and fast you know!) Something is a brewing up there in
Bolton.
HERZOGA
play a couple of gigs at the end of July – you ca n catch their unique
bland of infectiously spiky wrong pop at Luton’s George 2nd on July
27th and in Brighton (with Yuxhi) on July 31st at The Greenhouse Effect.
Meanwhile the Stoke on Trent band continue to promote their Wrong
Pop nights at the Glebe in Stoke On Trent – August 11th will feature
SABOTAGE LEFT, FURNITURE SESSION and ALREADY THE GHOSTS, the September
show will feature CHARLOTTEFIELD... |

TRUCKDRIVER
JNR (single of the week around here last week) are opening up a good
looking all-dayer thing in Sheffield for the Nine-Hertz
webzine. Nine Hertz is a rather good on line zine with a healthy thirst
for stoner rock and things of that nature. The gig happens on Saturday
28th July at The Cremorne, Sheffield. Full line up is: Grifter, Bad Date,
Suns of Thunder, Witchsorrow, Naked Shit, Flatlands, Stubb, Outburst, Domes
of Silence, Rob Himself and Truckdriver Jnr.
THE
DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN AND MESHUGGAH TEAM UP FOR EUROPEAN TOUR
- Our generation is lucky enough to experience one more stunning event
in human history (so says this very subtle press release) : two of the
most important bands of our time are teaming up for an exceptional clash
of the titans. Yes, it is true: THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN (USA) and MESHUGGAH
(Sweden) will embark on a co-headlining tour through Europe during November.
Both bands are well known for polyrhythmic music far beyond the imagination
of sane listeners and explosive, energetic and memorable live shows. A
complete listing of UK tour dates / cities can be found below. More than
fans are looking forward to this powerful match-up; the bands themselves
also can’t wait to hit the road together.
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN
says of the tour: "MESHUGGAH are our brothers from another mother. This
tour makes so much sense. Like flies on shit or white on eggs or something.
We are very excited to play on foreign shores again".
Both bands are currently
working on new albums, MESHUGGAH in their own studio in
Sweden, and THE DILLINGER
ESCAPE PLAN in L.A. with producer Steve Evetts.
THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN/
MESHUGGAH Tour Dates are November 3rd - Portsmouth, Pyramid Centre, 4th
- Sheffield, Corporation, 5th - Birmingham, Academy 2, 6th - Manchester,

Part
33 of the ORG-AN-ISED SINGLES SERIES is a split single featuring HERZOGA
and TO THE BONES. Herzoga are from Stoke, self confessed makers
of “wrong pop”, To The Bones are an urgent alternative guitar band from
Bolton (haven't we said all this once already?). Both bands have had Demo
Of The Week reviews on these Organ pages in recent weeks. The single will
feature two tracks from each band and a whole loads of bonus extras just
because we can, The single is released on July 9th, as with all the single
series releases, cost is a mere £2.00 (inc P&P in the UK for
those who wish to mailorder rather than
buy it in a shop or at a gig...). That's about an hour's worth of exciting
cutting edge genre defying music for just two quid The single is a limited
edition of 1000 (as all ORG-AN-ISED SINGLES are).

for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when
we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
MR
PHORMULA and LEWS TEWNS – Now what is going on here? No idea, trippers
with tactics and wonky wax mixes wrapping straight jackets around your
brain. More hip-hop and angry beats, straight out of Wales looking like
some mutthafuggin role models. Don’t come here with your couch potato blight.
More issues that Dafydd Iwan with a megaphone and an Overload X fixation
- burning down far more than your holiday cottage. Bi-lingual ‘cause it
Is all just word right – here you come with that sheep shagging shit but
remember this, they do ‘em on Friday you eat them on Sunday, don’t look
too closely at that gravy now. Mr Phormula is out of what Lews says is/was
one of the best Welsh language bands ever – Pep Le Pew (better than Crys?
Can’t be!). Hey look, most of this is in English, all of this is cool,
excellent lyrics that will have you paying total attention – tales
from Wales and Cymraeg is so right for rhyming and ducking and diving,
bake beans and bullets. A whole album of it and such well crafted beats
and tunes - impressive. Two Welsh guys rocking it old skool, taking you
on a journey, like a magic toadstool... excellent tunes, excellent music,
fine lyrics, fine fine fine and rather recommended - www.lewstewns.com

HOUSEHOLD
– Driving new wave (no-wave) punk rock from Scotland, urgent and rather
dynamic, tight and focused yet rather messy in a healthy way. Shouty man,
girl drummer adding words, boy bass played adding more - fizz, lo-fi buzz
and scratchy angular guitars and slightly discordant and right there in
your face. This is good, they have an edgy edge of their own, an edge that
could well push you over the edge. Really good packaging as well, I like
it when a band takes the time to get the artwork right, shows they care
a little more about life and such don’t you think? www.myspace.com/inthehousehold
FLIES
ARE SPIES FROM HELL – The Mountain Language EP - Another demo then, third
that’s turned up here now I think (maybe the forth). More instrumental
post-rock flavoured progressive composition from the Chichester band and
lots of those tiny-epic explosions in the godspeed. Next Hour is the stand
out track of three here, suffering a little in terms of recording quality,
can you do epic instrumental post-rock in a lo-fi way? Flies clearly have
loads of ambition, they need to add a little finger print of their own
now though, they’re kind of treading water a little and there’s suddenly
a lot of bands about who’ve worked out the same formula. Time to up the
stakes a little and give us something with a bit more identity, something
that doesn’t sound like a lot of things we’ve already heard in recent times
- the signs are here, the sublime old school prog feel to the start of
King Sly that blends so well with the almost glitchy texture of the drums.
I really like Flies Are Spies, I really like this new set of demo recordings,
I like the way they add a hint of old school prog to their post-rock epicness,
they have some truly beautiful moments here, Flies are a fine band, but
they really need to push it now though, too many bands content to just
sound like the big names of post-rock - www.myspace.com/fliesarespiesfromhell
SOUL
DESTROYER – Sound like an old school trad metal band band from around 1983
messing with The Prodigy’s machines in a rather obvious way, lyrics are
a little dumb, we’ll leave it with you, here’s a link if you’re interested
- www.myspace.com/souldestroyerband
KIARA
SCURO – Well they certainly want to sound a little different, kicks off
and demands instant attention with a great big sizzing bleeping siren of
a synth riff over a punky guitar attack. A three piece from London who
are threatening to be rather infectiously good while they stomp all over
you. Bit of a Franz/Bloc Party undercurrent, tougher sounding though...
Here Come The Razorsnakes will probably be all over the radio in the not
too distant future - www.myspace.com/kiarascuro
IYE
– In Shrouds Of Confusion, A Promise Was Made – Only one track on this
demo, it is just over twenty three minutes long though. so I guess one
track is enough. Instrumental ambient post-rock and another set of Silver
Mount Godspeed flavours, not quite so obvious this time though, they’re
taking their own sweet time and threatening to go down a slightly different
path. Iye are a five piece from Stoke On Trent, they add a slight menace
to the usual Godspeed/Red Sparrowes euphoria. Iye are half way there, no,
hang on things are getting rather too familiar again, these instrumental
post-rock bands are going to have to take another step forward soon, the
sound is good but they’re all using the same chords sequences and rhythms
and textures and, as fine as Iye are, things are getting a little predictable...

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK |

week we’ve been listening to...
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
WEEDEATER
– God Luck And Good Speed (Southern Lord) – Now what the hell do you think
a band called Weedeater are going to sound like? Yeap you got it Sherlock,
they sound like they’ve eaten a whole load of weed for tea and now they’re
figuring out where to place their chord-forming fingers next while they
stomp on those superfuzzedmuthafugga peddles and Sabbath right at your
booming gut. Super-sludged and megaheavy, produced by Steve Albini this
time around, the first two albums were Billy Anderson productions. Albini
gives them a freer feeling, raw and loose yet massively expansive, one
great bit edgy gigantic head-messing rewarding whole. Out of the
ashes of Buzzov-en, a three headed doom monster fronted by a man called
Dixie and just when you think you’ve got them pinned down and pigeonholed
as more doomed-out stoner rockers, they go and caress you with an inspired
slice of Southern picking and a minimal piece of bluegrass blues called
Alone. Alone is probably like nothing you ever heard before – quite
beautiful. And then they sludge it right at you again Orange Goblin style
before taking you right down to the depths and grab your last breath before
you can take it yourself with a beast of a riff heavy monster called Dirt
Mechanic. Ah look, there’s loads of this stoner doom kicking around, most
of it along the same lines – most of it is good, most of it very generic,
most of it you don’t honest need in your life – as long as you got a bit
of St Vitus, a slice or two of High On Fire, your supply of Eyehategod
close to hand and your Sabbath fix when you need it then you’re pretty
much sorted - you need this though. Damn fine sludged-out filthy
dirty version of ZZ Top’s Give me Back My Bullets, thought it sounded familiar
– righteously good version! File this album in the dirty filthy Southern
doom section, go praise the lord and pass me that square whisky bottle
there for this review has ended with all the godspeed and good luck needed
, they are the weedmonkeys and this is a stoner rook classic. www.myspace.com/weedeater.

EYVIND
KANG – Athlantis (Ipecac) – Eyvind Kang has played viola with Mr Bungle
and Secret Chiefs, he’s arranged for Laurie Anderson, he’s collaborated
with a whole load of interesting people/bands (and spent time in Bad Brains
pits) this is his eight album. A rewarding classical epic, an avant hybrid
of Arvo Part, Ligeti, of choirs, and soloists, of dark voices, minimal
drones, gigantic operatic drama, Gregorian chants, Renaissance textures,
medieval plainsong, haunting, minimal passages – monastery-like and really
rather beautiful. This doesn’t really sound like it should be coming at
us via a rock label (even if it is Ipecac), sounds like it should be there
alongside the more challenging classical composers like John Adams – good
that it is then. The work is something of an oratorio, lead voices Mike
Patton and Jessika Kenney get it so right - a rather remarkable performance
from Mr Patton actually, you can just about hear the tiniest inflection
of rock singer, which make it stand out just a little from the more formal
classical voice you would expect with work like this, makes it just a little
more human and approachable. There are lots of things in this piece that
will probably sound familiar to those who know their avant/contemporary
classical music, this is a rather beautiful and rewarding album though,
something really rather special and highly recommended. Available in Europe
via Southern – www.southern.net
GIRAFFE
RUNNING – Giraffe Running (Red-F/Learn To Live) - Now this is rather
different, rather intriguing, and yes it works. Let me explain, Giraffe
Running are a two piece instrumental band from Dublin, and this is a rather
fascinating two CD set – it looked good from the start, excellent packaging
and inviting artwork. Designed by Matthew Bolger of the rather excellent
Redneck Manifesto and hand printed at Dexterity press in Chicago by Jeff
Mueller (Shipping News/June Of ’44). So anyway, this two piece band, Giraffe
Running (great name, bet they eat leaves and run oh so very fast), Greg
Barrett (bass guitar) and Hag (Drums) – yeah, that’s all, bass and drums.
So Greg and Hag make this rather fine, rather different bendy pronky post-rock-ish
instrumental music that really doesn’t sound like anything or fit anywhere
that obvious. I guess if we were going to vaguely namedrop in the interests
of pointing you vaguely in the right direction then we might mention Battles
or Don Cab or even Monkey Boy or Rothko, nothing really like any of that
really though – vague signposts. So they recorded a five track album of
clever instrumental compositions featuring only drums and bass guitar,
an album that would have been impressively good by itself had they just
gone and released it – but no, that was only the start. The duo then sent
off the tracks to friends and admired musicians, who then in turn added
guitars, vocals, violins and all kinds of extra musical dimensions. People
like Ian Williams from Battles, Agata from Melt Banana, Max Tundra, Eoin
Dillon (Kila), Bryn Cloke (Montana Pete) and a whole load more. The second
CD features the results, 15 collaborations – the original tracks embellished
in all kinds of fascinating ways, all held together by the now rather familiar
bass and drum lines. The skeletons taken to a whole host of colourful places,
dressed in different coloured flesh and out in all kinds of different directions.
All rather intriguing, and yes it works in a rather rewarding and strangely
beautifully fascinating subtle idiosyncratic set of ways, well worth checking
out – www.girafferunning.com
HARPIES
– Lily Wry (Fortune And Glory) - Finally got our hands on the new Harpies
album then (50p down the Record And Tape Exchange, no doubt sold off my
some journo or radio DJ who got it free and couldn’t be bothered to actually
listen). Been out a couple of months but hey, better later than never and
when did good music ever come with a sell by date anyway? We’ve always
had good things to say about Harpies, well back in their early demo/single
days at least, kind of lost touch with the Birmingham band in recent times,
completely missed their first album - this is their second. Still the Harpies
we knew back then then, that skin peeling metalcore and the abrasive smell
of confrontation, scathing brutal beauty yet again. Fronted by the terrifying
voice of Nicola Honey, she sounds like she takes no shit from anyone, sounds
in complete control – soothing and seductive one minute, ripping your mind
apart with her violent aggression the next. Tiresome comparisons to Tarrie
B are an insult, Nicola sounds like she’s rip her apart as well. Her band
still taste of nu metal, they always did have an edge though, never did
have any regard for the rulebook, the light and shade is deliciously dramatic
– intelligent progressions, delicate and way left of centre, the obvious
route that so many others choose to take is not for these Harpies – shape-shifting
charm and calm before the left-field brutal storm of screams and pummelling
riffs, some genuinely beautiful moments, bravely different – almost gothy
but that’s lazy of me as well, they’re really not that easy to pin down.
A million miles ahead of the obviousness of all those girl fronted goth-metal
band. There’s some genuinely surprising moments here, this is a quality
metal album from a fine band who really deserve the attention of you metalheads
far far more than a lot of bands we could mention - www.myspace.com/harpies
RECOIL
– SubHuman (Mute) - Back after a six years with a new album, this time
Alan Wilder collaborating with New Orleans bluesman Joe Richardson as well
an English singer Carla Trevaskis. The result is a sublime cross pollination
of murky low slung mellow blues and Portishead-ish sub dub n’ beats that
come laced with the finest of warm inviting seductive detail. Dark,
refined, whispered, ambient, eclectic, blended, uncluttered yet complex
and really rather fine... And then when you dip a little deeper in and
start to explore the questions he/they are asking – the essence of being
human, subordinate – subhuman, then there’s a whole set of fresh layers
to unpeel. As impressive as you’d expect a Recoil album to be and
as different as you’d expect as well, rather fine on several levels www.mute.com
/ www.recoil.co.uk / www.myspace.com/recoil
THE
COLUMBOS – Thousand Ways To Look Clever (Regain) – They’re from Sweden,
they play energetic alternative infectious indie pop with a quirky slightly
psychedelic edge, a kind of slightly cooler/more geeky Weezer for Lilys
fans. www.regainrecords.com
MANSBESTFRIEND
– Poly.sci.187 (Anticon) – Tim Holland’s other alias, he’s better known
as Sole. Mansbestfriend is where he gets to play with instrumental hip-hop
textures and cut up sound bites. Human strife and political contradiction,
rhythmic cross pollination. Hip-hop collage and ambient free-flow, a melange
of textures and rhythms, sound bites that flow and never really infringe.
Mellow electronica, intelligent composition, mostly instrumental, rich
textures – glowing fizz and crackle, not too much glitch, all rather refined.
And you know Anticon releases are always of a certain standard, always
a label to take note of. www.anticon.com
/ www.soleone.org
SHAPED
BY FATE – The Unbeliever (In At The Deep End) – They appear on the face
of it to be a rather standard issue modern-ish sounding extreme metal/hardcore
crossover of a beast, until that is they flick a switch six tracks in and
decide to grab themselves some identity and make some attempt to stand
out from the crowd a little. We were getting ready to hit the eject button
when the ambition of My Sun Set To Rise Again kicked in with some rather
moody smouldering and potentially epic intent. Shaped by Fate have been
kicking around the metal underground for a few years now, they’re from
South Wales and ultimately My Sun ends up going nowhere. The promise led
us into a six minute instrumental then, disappointingly, they came charging
back at us with their growling hardcore pitbull vocals and rule obeying
constructions again. Shaped By Fate are pretty good at doing the blistering
bleeding modern extreme crossover metal thing, as good as anyone of a number
of bands we could mention – and thereby hang the problem, heard it all
so many times already. Shaped By Fate hint at an ability to do so much
more yet they seem content to just conform to the genre standard and fit
in with the crowd and as a result they’ve made and album that does really
excite like it should – www.iatde.com
MOTHER AND THE ADDICTS –
Science Fiction illustrated (Chemikal Underground) – Well now, second album
and a whole other edgy stew of Fall and Joy Division and Aztec Camera and
Orange Juice and all kinds of 80’s new wave and funk and pop. Right now
it sounds like Ian Bunnyman fronting Haircut 100 and bits of krautrock
flavoured agit pop and Heaven 17 and a every bit of the 80’s and long coats
and earnest boys and OMD all crammed in to every song . Now it sounds like
Kajagoogoo and where’s the eject button, the 80’s were crap....
CENTRIFUGE – A Document Of
Selected Works (We Like Danger) – Edgy alternative post-punky indie guitar
rock, this is good, where have this band been hiding? They’re from Stoke
on Trent as well, damn, they’ve split up! Oh well... Infectiously awkward
edgy rewarding raw and tasty in a complex way where it needs to be. If
they hadn’t split up a earlier this year then we’d going on far more about
this rather tasty home made album. Damn. This is an ever optimistic optimist
club though, this is a fine album and well worth you checking out. Seems
some of them are now in a band called Ox Scapula. www.myspace.com/centrifuge
STILL REMAINS – The Serpent
(Roadrunner) – More of that over-slick modern metal with everything piled
in there with the kitchen sink and the screamo nice polite/monster growl
vocals and the melodic keyboards and the Trivium battle metal riffs and
the moody bits and the Hawthorn Height bits and the Bullet For My Whatever
and guess they do it rather well and hey the Download sheep will happily
part with their money and no doubt be more than satisfied with what they
get, can politely leave it with you and cynically smile now please? www.stillremains.com
MAN OF THE HOUR – Destroy
The Machines Of Slaughter (No Face) – From Scotland with some no messing
proper old school power/thrash metal pounding. Plenty of chug and scream
and an Armoured Saint feel (that’s a serious complement). Think Pantera,
think Priest, and a singer with a name like Tommy Concrete has to be worth
checking out – yeap, metal thrashing good! www.manofthehour.co.uk
FARRAH – Cut Out And Keep
(Lojinx) – I like Farrah, they’re extremely infectious live, hard not to
smile at a Farrah gig. Infectiously slick bubble gum flavoured indie pop
rock, squeaky clean. Extremely slick and just a little quirky around the
edges. Carefree, breezy, upbeat, bright, slick slick slick – alright, that’s
enough of the slickness and the sugar now – www.farrah.co.uk
HEMLOCK – Bleed The Dream
(Candlelight) – Out of Las Vegas and yet another band called Hemlock, this
time we’re talking violently pounding hardcore thrashcore metalcore hatecore
brutality – core! No messing, straight at your head Hatebreed styleeeee.
Muscled up, pounding, this is ugly - brutal breakdowns, relentless and
ugly is in the case good. A brutally heavy onslaught of relentless hardcore
metal – www.hemlockworld.com

SINGLE
OF THE WEEK
ZAN
PAN – Sirens Of Titan/Swati (Pigeon Coup) – Sirens is a large slice of
completely and utterly self indulgently preposterously over the top epic
operatic fest of 70’s glam rock riffs and new wave prog rock. Bowie messing
with Meat Loaf and bats out of hell via Roxy and The Adverts and Hawklords
and Megahype and Nik Turner style space rock and a doomed relationship
between a stuntman and a 50’s monster b-movie monster queen out on freeway
59 somewhere beyond infinite suns and the Sirens of Titan and we’re gonna
hit the highway like a battering ram on a silver black phantom bike and
time to end this sentence now. The Squire of Somerton’s volcanic supergroup
and some rocky horror transverberation where the super suns collide at
the end of time - or the back row of the show you’ve seen twenty times
already – a work of genius. Swati meanwhile is all pastoral and petal sweet
and reflective and “the end is a mathematical puzzle where all the parts
come together in a schizoid harmonic union” – brilliant, that’s what we
call a single – www.myspace.com/zanpanband

SINGLE
OF THE WEEK 2
THE
GENTLE GOOD - Dawel Disgyn EP (Gwymon) – The Gentle Good is the wonderful
work of one man, Cardiff’s Gareth Bonello. The EP, his debut, features
two very easy on the ear Welsh language songs and two sung in English.
All four songs are delicately beautiful, all four gently flow, all four
will make you feel good about absolutely everything. Delicate acoustic
pieces, simple glowing uplifting songs that will leave a spring in your
step and smile on your face. Wonderful song-writing, melodies that take
you to everywhere you need to go – radiant songs, restrained stings, simple
guitar and a beautifully warm friendly voice that drags you in to the words
in such a delightfully rewarding way. Think Nick Drake, Martyn Carthy,
oh just go and find out for yourself, this EP is a treasure, so much good
positive music around at the moment, these are rich musical times. www.myspace.com/gentlegood

CHECK OUT
THE
BLACK KEYS – Just Got To Be (V2) – More of that edgy raw loose authentic
blues rock retro thing that the duo from Ohio do so well, The Black Keys
are the real deal, low slung swampy 70’s progressive blue rock – Zeppelin,
Pat Travers cool, yeah black Betty! Another cool record from those Black
Keys, named thus because a black key is someone not quit right – just right!

DAVID
CRONENBERG’S WIFE – I Couldn’t Get Off (Blang) - London Lo-Fi left-field
artsy scenesters (based down in the Smoke but from the North) with some
spiky observations. Scratchy new wave surf guitar driven by demandingly
heavy garage flavoured (even more scratchy) drums and a bit of a Wreckless
Eric/John Cooper Clark/Billy Childish feel to things. They do feel like
their home ground of Manchester and the late 70’s and Joy Division and
punk-edged mechanical psychedelia and a dark twisted edge – www.myspace.com/davidcronenburgswife
/ www.blang.co.uk
FABLES
LAST STAND – Bite The Hook (End Of The Trail) – Big rock, big riff rock
– think Horse London, The Almighty, The Cult, 70’s style dirty power riff
‘n raunch and things like Montrose or Starz or Hellcats or Starfighters
and all tattoos and sunglasses and... Sounds they’d kick up a storm live.
www.myspace.com/fableslaststand
PATRICK
WATSON – Luscious Life (Secret City) – I guess I kind of like it in a Radiohead
tease Coldplay kind of way, I guess, I mean the thing is harmless enough
and there’s no Kaiser-fi crimes going on here and it is better than claiming
everything is average and... next please – www.patrickwatson.net

message to you bands, labels and anyone else with a blog or a My Space
page or a webzine or who are generally out there getting involved in a
positive way and spreading the word about fine music and creativity and
underground/alternative art that go bump in the night. This is how it works
around here; we’re perfectly happy for you to cut and paste our reviews
and put them on your band/label pages or where ever you want, please please
do go spread the word, that’s what this is about – the spreading of information.
We encourage you to do it (unless you’re involved in something that’s a
little unsavoury like one bunch of nasty little right wing scumbags we
had a run in with a few weeks ago), There’s no ego here, we’re not going
to come chasing you about copyright and all that crap. All we ask you to
do is credit the material and add links to our pages with anything you
want to use. Please feel free to use our words to spread the word, it’s
how it works – word word word it’s basic netiquette, it’s weblove and only
a massive ego-inflated no-mark would think any other way. Use our words,
we take it as a massive compliment – please do add the link though, please
tell people where you got it from and cut 'n paste away (like many others
have already done), the more people who read about these bands and things
the better don’t yer think? It’s the underground way.
