TRUDY are joined by SCARAMANGA SIX for a South London show on August

rather fine (Tim Smith produced) pop bands both of whom Yous may have seen
supporting Cardiacs somewhere sometime.
WILLARD QUITS THE OFFSPRING,
PARADA SAVES THE DAY - Atom Willard has announced that he will be leaving
The Offspring to become a full time member of ex-Blink 182 man Tom Delonge's

or better still tune in to Organ TV
They Came From The Stars
I Saw Them have their ‘lost’ album finally released by Onomatopoeia
Records on August 27th (see last week’s Organ
for our thoughts), the band play The Lock Tavern, Chalk Farm, London on
2nd August and The Proud Galleries, The Stables, Chalk Farm, London on
25th August. And in case the name (or our review) didn't convince you,
the facts that the band worship the Greek goddess of chaos, are led by
one Horton Jupiter, frequently have 25 members on stage including a topless
belly dancer, all wear white, play toy instruments and round off this album
with the 25-minute *Astro National Anthem* should clinch the matter.

rock, post punk, post man pat, hardcore, indie, alternative, pronk, whatever.....
music and creativity for the open minded

DEMO
TIME |
Like
we already said - we shall no longer be reviewing a million demos, we're
just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time
for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when
we tell you it's goood then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
No,
No, nothing this week, serve lack of good demos landing, lot of average
ones, strikes me that bands aren’t bothering as much as they once did,
seem to think all they need do is put up a My Space page then just sit
back and wait for us all to come knocking. Must have been asked to check
out at least 300 My Space pages this week... There isn't the time and if
we do manage to grab a ten second sound bite before the phone rings then...

ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK |
This
week we’ve been listening to...
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
GEORGE
WASHINGTON BROWN – On The Night Plain (Static Caravan) – Who is George
Washington Brown? Well it doesn’t really matter. Actually no, that’s wrong,
very wrong, it matters rather a lot actually – I just don’t think now is
the time to tell you (well assuming you don’t already know). You see, to
tell you would be to inevitably give you the wrong pre-conceived idea.
Not that we have great big megastar hiding behind a secret identity, no,
just someone with an interesting past – oh look, dug myself a whole big
hole now. Start again, he’s been on a long journey to get here and here
is all that matters for now. Here is where you find refined delicate strong
alternative indie pop and glowing gentle lo-fi (lo-fi does not mean low
quality) wistful pop perfection and all very very English and to cheat
and steal from the press release – “for fans of Guided By Voices,
Animal Collective, Van Dyke Parks and the Elephant 6 collective”. Is that
a Melotron? Psychedelic in an uncluttered unobvious Beatles, Beach Boys,
Village Green Preservation Society kind of way – but no, that’s wrong as
well, well maybe if you came at Sargent Pepper in that English sounding
post Guided By Voices, Elliott Smith way that no one else actually has
until now. This is wonderful actually, mainly because the songs are so
good, but then also because of the details in those songs – the sounds,
the instrumentation, the mellow pace, the texture, the uncluttered warmth,
the lyrics, the style, all the piss and vinegar and wholesome positive
way that it just confidently knowingly flows and just feels so right –
this really is a work of expansive unassuming captivating beauty, yes,
a cherishable thing and yes, a very modern timeless honest record – all
those little gestures and the slights of hand. Just take the time to go
and find out, just make the time, consider this review our gift to you
and your continued musical adventure – www.myspace.com/georgewashingtonbrown
or www.staticcaravan.org

CHECK OUT
DIABLO SWING ORCHESTRA –
The Butcher’s Ballroom (Candlelight) – All the way from Stockholm Sweden
with something that falls somewhere between full blown female fronted opera,
driving jazz flavoured bombastic orchestral metal and Mexican Mariachi-style
goth-pomp – same old thing then! It works, it really does, you’d maybe
expect a disjointed all over the place dog’s dinner of an album, but no,
it flows in one great big easily digestable preposterous pronkoid over
the top whole. Dramatically fronted, dramatically stringed, dramatically
voiced, operatically voiced, dramatically everything! The Diablo Swing
Orchestra not a subtle band! Good, they don’t sound like they’d subtle
that well. Annlouice Leogdlund has the perfect voice (and presence) to
pull it all off, sounds like she was born for nothing else, another album
you need (sorry) – off you go now, here’s link – www.myspace.com/diabloswingorchestra
CARTA – The Glass Bottom
Boat (Resonant) – From San Francisco, beautifully accomplished, mostly
instrumental (save for one girl voiced title track piece of glowing delight
featuring Sarah Bell). Delicate, refined, laced with far too much challenging
character and identity to be pushed in to the convenient little pigeon
hole that “post rock” has become now. Warm ambient dusty silence
perforated with pin-drop notes of delicate crafted warm inviting relaxing
musical sunlight. Mostly instrumental and predominantly downtempo, framed
on clever unassuming melody, the dynamics of quiet (where less is always
so so much more). Hang on, I just bothered reading the press release, I
do try to make a point of avoiding press releases and finding anything
out until the music has done at least a little talking - Carta including
in their line up Sacha Galvanga, one time member of 90’s Organ favourites/regulars
Rosa Mota (still one of our favourites actually), that goes someway in
explaining the quality and the desire to challenge. The Glass Bottom Boat
is a beautifully radiant album, a welcomingly warm album to relax in to,
an album full of depth and refined joy, an album that will leave you feeling
overwhelmingly happy. It doesn’t always have to be demanding or complex,
this is a simple album (alive with fine detail), an album that you’ll find
more and more in with every listen - Recommended. www.resonantlabel.com
/ www.theglassbottomboat.com
SLOUGH FEG – Hardworker (Cruz
Del Sur) – Old school Seventies sounding melodic twin guitar harmonised
heavy rock/metal/prog and a strange kind of brew - mid-paced collision
of Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Spinal Tap and slighty Celtic sounding Thin
Lizzy (including a metal’d up Horslips cover – Dearg Doom - probably the
best thing to be found on here). Sixth album from the cult US band then,
and if you’re in the right state of mind then their heavy blend is rather
original and worth your time in a Tenacious D/Thor kind of way – real metal.
www.myspace.com/sloughfeg
COFFINBERRY – God Dam Dogs
(Morphius) – Solid alternative American indie guitar rock from Cleveland,
Ohio. Quality sound from a quality band, one for fans of 90’s sounding
alternative American music of an intelligent colourful Buffalo Tom nature
– www.morphius.com or www.coffinberry.net
LITTLE AIDA – Mad Country
(Second Shimmy) – Very mellow, dreamy, lazy-day, girl voiced, almost child-like,
enigmatic alt.country. Spiritual, early, all very slow and relaxed and
vast in a compact kind of way, deeply melancholic, slow laments, almost
eerie in a very un-eerie slightly ghostly kind of way. Rather fine – www.secondshimmy.com
ASHES OF POMPEII – The End
Begins Tomorrow (Roadmovie) - I know we have this oh so nice and friendly
policy of not bothering with anything we’re not that positive about, but
jeeeeeeeeeeezzzus h woodpecker on a big yellow pogostrick, how many more
of these damn bedwetting bands are we going to have to endure before something
else is broken?! Emo scream beano nemo bullet for my brain cliched indie/hardcore
conformity with that now extremely tiresome regulation two vocalist thing!
You all know what this all sounds like, you’ve all been there far too many
times already. One whinny emo life-is-hard-I’m-deep-and -I’m-going-to-cry-soon
voice and one screamo-meano-cookie- monster-growling-broken-washing-machine
-I’m-the-hard-one-don’t-mess-with-me voice (probably the confused bass
player) - both of them in need of taking out back for a damn good chat
with Rip Cruncher’s blunt and rusty blood encrusted filthy dirty claw hammer.
Hey look, 2007 already, wake up smell the horseshit, singing like that
is not very big and not very clever anymore, and - important breaking news
bit here so pay full attention now – someone else in some other band just
may have already done these two singer growling/quiet thing! Hang on, here
comes the very original never heard anything like this before moody inward
looking post-hardcore indie bit where he can’t recognise himself any more
and no one really understands him – he needs to get it assessed properly,
get a full diagnosis before the prophets are lost. They’re from Germany,
they sound remarkably American (or South Welsh) and now he’s singing about
how everything is indestructible – guess what? He’s wrong! Bang – see -
this disc is rather easy to destroy! One quick stamp of a heel and whooosh
– destfugginstroyed for good and no more unambitious whinny emo indie metal
post hardcore twin voiced cliched nonsense from you lot anymore! Destroyed!
How many more unoriginal conform-to-the-blueprint-and-don’t-dare-be-even-a-tiny-bit-different
riffs and cliched lyric lines can one copycat band manage to get on to
an album – oh look, a UK tour is schedule for September, goodiebleedingumdrops
- and summer is as far away as it could possibly be (yeah, I even listened
to the lyrics closely enough to quote the phony baloney). What a tedious
lack of ambition some bands have and this is why we don’t bother reviewing
things like this... you want a link? Here you go,
have a nice day now.

TANGAROA
/ GUTWORM / MALEFICE – London, Borderline 27th June
We were half way through
something or other when it started to take affect again, that booming sound,
unique and unmistakable – and on stage already when we get there (damn!).
Tangaroa are opening another Anticulture three band ram raid on deepest
London. For those at the back who got distracted by the bats and haven’t
been paying full attention, AntiCulture is a rather fine UK based extreme
metal label, one of the new breed now making a serious impact – more of
them in a minute, first the mighty sea god...
Tangaroa are like headbanging
in a rubber room, they have an unmistakable sound, a hybrid of booming
technical progressive jazz flavoured metal with a thrashy grindcore edge
that demands your undivided attention. The Borderline has a healthy crowd
in for the first band on. Clearly, no one is viewed as a headliner on this
impressive three band relay race of a bill tonight. Tangaroa have a malicious
off the wall edge of their own, the Leeds outfit are clearly demanding
more from themselves (and their audience), relentless experimental extreme
metal that hints at Meshuggah, at Dillinger Escape Plan or Mastadon and
maybe even at Primus (in a Carcass flavoured way) and thankfully comes
out sounding like nothing but the very distinctive Tangaroa. This is a
band of leaders, not pack followers, seriously up there with the very best
and with a sound and identity of their own already - they’re almost the
acceptable face of technical extreme progressive metal, acceptable because
they choose to ignore the rules that the others seem to obsessively obey
and seem bent on writing a whole set of new ones for themselves - a sound
and a band capable of separating sky from earth and they’re kicking off
the gig tonight in fine fine style. That style is all in the sound, visually
they could be any one of a million extreme hardcore metal bands, standard
issue no messing look/stance/performance, no thrills, no theatrics, just
up there booming and bouncing and doing that extreme hardcore rubber metal
thing they do. Probably the best metal band in England right now, so much
depth, relentless – teeth grinding serial killer running after you down
the road and in to every little side street kind of relentless
Tough act to follow
then, not a problem for Gutworm and their rent-a-pit tonight though. With
a second album on the way, the worm are ready to take it all on – Gutworm
are extreme and relentless in their own way – straightforward after the
dimensions of Tangaroa - constant and in your face, an extreme wall of
foreboding thrashing grinding helldog modern metalcore noise for those
who like it straight at ‘em. No time for the distractions of progness,
I guess if you were to rip them open then the complexities are in there
hidden in the depths, the glue holding together their violent wall of noise
and aural Domestos. Gutworm are for those who want their modern hardcore
metal delivered straight at their heads. Live they can kick up a brutal
storm and tonight they impress like they haven’t really done before. If
you want it served with no messing aggressive intent then Gutworm have
just stepped up a league. Their new album Disfigured Narcissus is about
to drop and things are looking good..
And then Reading’s Malefice
grab the baton from the clenched metal fist of the worm and take
us all right round the track again – same relentless intensity, no time
for air. Five of them with a slightly different shade of aggressive metal
that falls somewhere between the extremeties of Gutworm and the more commercial
sounds of all those Chimairas and such – hey look, they’re good at it,
damn good, they have a frantic ferocious promising edge of their own that’s
starting to emerge now. Once again there it all is under your very nose
if you want it (the best bands always are). Intense modern metal that’s
every bit as good as that overpriced overhyped stuff they’re trying to
sell you for over there – two relatively straight forward no messing bands
after the contortions of the mighty Tangaroa, all valid and all doing their
thing better than most...
AntiCulture are an impressive
label, walking it rather than just talking it, backing the best in fresh
modern extreme metal and making a genuine contribution to the networks,
a fine night and a fine label, the ever evolving UK metal underground strikes
again - get yourself a slice of Tangaroa, they're blowing everyone away

SINGLE
OF THE WEEK
DAN
DEACON – Crystal Cat (Carpark) - “Dan Deacon spends his days composing
works for classical ensembles, he’s got the duct-taped glasses and bald
spot to prove it – but boy! Does he unwind in the evenings....” – can’t
beat that and you’ve hopefully caught the excellent “homemade” video that
goes with this single on Organ TV in the last few weeks (we’ll have in
on again if you missed it!). Armed with bags of colour and lo-fi fx to
supercharge his Casio hotrod in an Assdroids meets Squarepusher in a joyful
Lazytown world where they all stay up way past 8.08 manner, Dan Deacon
is a whole lucky bag of treats. Hyper chip-tune lo-fi casiocore anthems
and overworked relying drum boxes all fuzzing together like some mechanical
insect invasion – all revolving around a clever tune though and built on
manic melody (and a chipmonk voice that doesn’t distract!). Hamster dance!
Concise pop that may sound thrown together and throwaway and stop it right
now, everyone clean this mess up, this is actually very clever and
complex – Hella’s early electronic side, he’s like Cuban Boys for Mr Bungle
fans who may have drunk too much orange juice and all pretty unique and
rather essential and stop right now, everyone clean this mess up

CODES
IN CLOUDS – Distant Street Lights/Fractures (Erased Tapes) – We knew they’d
be along in a minute, this week’s token instrumental Explosions In Your
Godspeed The Mogwai post rock band. All very nice and peaceful and euphoric
and relaxing and expansive and all done just as well as last week’s post
rock instrumental band and the one we got in the mail the week before that
(and the one we expect to arrive next week). I really do hate to be negative
because we do rather like this stuff, but hey, you know just where the
big expansive noisy bit is going to come, it really is starting to get
embarrassingly predictable now. It must be that this instrumental post
rock thing is an easy thing for boys with guitars to do. Oh look, Codes
In Clouds do it as well as anyone, another beautiful uplifting post-rock
painting, and if we hadn’t heard 37 other bands in the last three months
with demos and independent singles and hopes and aspirations that are exactly
the same then we’d probably be really positive. Codes in Clouds are clearly
a fine band and if only that had the guts to attempt to add a little hint
of X factor personality then... we look forward to their next moves
