those horses of instruction, get on them right now and release those endorphins.
Not everything is a sales pitch and Ourlives have now been confirmed to
play this year’s Iceland Airwaves Festival in Rejkjavik on Saturday 20th
October. Catch the band at a new wonderfully named venue called 'ORGAN',
that’s right, the band, who are of course from Iceland will be playing
a full headline slot at the venue named in honour of us. Ditzy Scene? What’s
that? Are you paying attention in the pond?
– these are the things that
have been in our ears this week, please explore and if it sounds interesting
then hit the links and make your own minds up, our reviews and thoughts
are mere signposts designed to guide you to the things you might like to
feast on yourselves... don’t you just love the www. |
IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME? |

THINGS TO GET SHOUTING ABOUT? |
Well
besides shouting about George, we've done with shouting for now, actually
why aren't all you bands and zines and labels shouting about George Tabb?
He is part of the underground zine family, one of the originals - he needs
our help right now, his situation needs the oxygen of publicit, it really
is a matter of life or death. Come on you bands, zines, labels and promoters
where are you?
No time to shout this week,
we're all Ditzy'd out and Made All Up and itching to tell Yous what's so
Ditzy Scene - we're itching to get shouting about Ditzy Scene

DEMO
OF THE WEEK
INSTRUMENTS
– Make Music – Nice demo, nice set of tunes, fine and uplifting and just
right. Instruments are a really uplifting pleasing, rather nice, four piece
from London. The music is mostly instrumental and I guess you could point
at a lot of current post rock and slightly emo-edged post-hardcore math
bands. they clearly have a love for things like Polvo and June of 44, for
Botch and Isis and Hella and Battles and Don Cabellero – all in a good
positive way. Instruments are enjoyable, they’re breezy, they’re about
the simple act of making music and enjoying it. Instruments are joyous.
Six fine tracks, count them like cats and get all bright eyed – www.myspace.com/instrumentsmakemusic

THE
BAND OF THE EYE – Band from Bristol making their early Nirvana/Sonic Youth

OF THE WEEK
YOU AND THE ATOM BOMB –
The Spirit Of Things (Sink And Stove) - Seems that fair retribution would
be to rip their teeth from their mouths and burn their houses to the ground,
well we can’t see why that should be, but that is what they said. An exciting
opportunity has arisen so get your head screwed on together - You And The
Atom Bomb have a new album, feast on the scene, lick your plate clean –
this is quite something alright, it was nothing if not that and there really
is nothing quite like You And The Atom Bomb and they should be a regular
household name (or at least a flash in the pan) because they really are
not quite the same - they are quite some thing alright. The Atom
Bomb are really rather unique and quintessentially English and so uplifting
and so so good for you. They bounce and spring and like we said before
they’re so gleefully fine. Words that make you skip, tunes that make you
hop, slices of imaginative and rather original English prog and meaty keyboard
rides and bring me the head of anyone who ever says anything bad about
You And The Atom Bomb – we won’t hesitate to drag their names through the
mud and mock them forever - heads, tails and exuberant post punk pop new
wave safety dancing and yes shimmering beat pop toooooooo.
And an effervescent feeling of very eloquent and sing along to the boy/girl
dual voices. Get your head together, and you could not do any better, make
no mistake, separate the ins from the outs, then let your hair down and
think fondly of the time you first heard of the musical fineness and beautiful
wordery of You And The Atom Bomb – one of our favouritest bands of all.

(should we say they are so good they are a modern day Hatfield And The
North?)

ALBUM OF THE WEEK 2
GALLHAMMER – ILL INOCENCE
(Peaceville) – A Japanese metal trio who manage to churn up an impressive
and rather original mix of classic old school death metal grindcore crust
and throw it right out there with the bleakest serving of blackness. An
offering that comes with just the right amount of avant edge and an occasional
hint of way left field Deerhoof style creative J-rock bounce to add to
the Neurosis (capital N) bleakness, the raw thrashing, and the dark dark
churning. Most of the time they grinding away in a violent cathartic pit
of churning churning oppression and slowcore darkness while they sing of
isolation and a world without colour – and just when you’re thinking, they’re
right, no colour here, they hit you with all the colour you could possible
need and remind you that if you really look (or listen) there is no such
thing as black. Viewed properly, black is the most colourful thing there
is and Gallhammer are quite possible the finest black metal band in the
world right now. They understand the power of restraint and that some times
less is so so much more - their music is textured and detailed, no blind
obedient following of the metal rules here – Gallhammer are an intelligent
cathartic, almost nihilistic challenge. When they need to serve it up with
classic Dark Throne Hellhammer rawness, they do. They hint at locked on
German space rock for a moment or two, they have the production spot on.
They lull you with their Sunn 0))) style epic/quiet minimalism then pummel
you with their raw garage thrash – oh and did we mention that all three
of them are girls? Not that it matters here. Gallhammer are probably the
best metal band out there right now (oh and the artwork is just right as
well). www.peaceville.com |
ALSO
CHECK OUT
DOWN – Down III: Over The
Under (Roadrunner) – New Orleans sludge metal supergroup Down just dropped
their third set of bombs. Yes! The answer is yes! Yes it is as good as
you expected it to be – massive sludge and doom and righteous wrecking
balls of monster size stoner rock and heavy psychedelic blues. You don’t
need to be told who they are do you? Led by frontman Phil Anselmo, he of
Pantera, good people out of fine bands like Crowbar, Eyehategod, Superjoint
Ritual and Corrosion of Conformity – I expect this is all over the mainstream
rock press/radio, you don’t really need us telling you how good it is do
you. Just check out Never Try – www.down-nola.com
/ www.roadrunnerrecords.co.uk
WE START FIRES – We Start
Fires (Hot Noise) – Debut album, is it really their first album? Really?
Seems like they’ve been around for ever with their homemade demos, their
glitter packed packages and their zine powered DIY releases. We Start Fires
are the real deal, they’ve got their hands dirty, they’re worked hard to
get here, they’re more than earned it. Twelve slices of girl powered (boy
drummer driven) infectiously good electro indie punk pop. These days they’re
all slick and polished, slick without ever losing any of their old energy
or appeal though, the sound and production is spot on (and ready to break
hearts clean in two). They’re the Charlies Angels/Disco Pistol who had
the guts to stick to their guns and actually get it done, they’ll spin
your heads with their perfect pop – nothing wrong with pop when it comes
with heartfelt warmth and honesty like this does. Cool as f indie girl
pop, Bananarama for all you Be Your Own Pet fans, a cool as Kim Deal –
cool cool cool. www.westartfires.co.uk
SODOM
– The Final Sign Of Evil (SPV) – A whole load of old 1984 songs re-recorded
(or recorded properly for the first time) by the original line up of Tom
Angelripper, Grave Violator and Chris Witchhunter right here in 2007. You
see, the way we try to do it around these parts is to throw on the music
that comes in without really looking at who it is or reading the press
release and the hype that generally comes in here with a new release. We
try to avoid the the pre-conceived ideas and let the music do the talking
– so we threw this on and thought, hey this sounds a little dates and raw,
sounds like the early days of thrash and death and Hellhammer and Venom,
sounds like 1984 – I kind of like the sound (felt kind of pleased with
myself when I got around to checking the facts). I guess this is mostly
for those who are already fans (and those who don’t snigger too much at
those names – well they don’t really use them themselves now, I guess they’re
kind of laughing at themselves as well). Sounds raw and dated and kind
of nostalgic is a rather positive sense. Thankfully they’re recorded the
songs properly, i.e. raw and blistering and authentically ’84 rather that
all polished up and over produced. The album features the tracks from their
original In The Sign Of Evil EP along with a whole load of other tracks
that date from the time and should have been recorded back then – apparently
this twelve track album is what The Sign Of Evil should have sounded like.
The German threesome have got it just right when they could quite easily
have made a right dogs dinner of things – despite their silly names, they
generally do get things right. Sodom fans and old school death metal thrashheads
should be more that happy with this rather fine slice of authentic thrashing
old school black/death metal – www.sodomized.info
/ www.spv.de |
SOLAR FIRE TRIO – Rise Up
(Foreign Frequency) – 49 minutes, three tracks – free-form jazz meets avant
rock noise. A two sax three piece led my Ray Dickaty (Skree, Spiritulized
and a million others) on tenor Sax, Dave Jackson on alto sax and held together
by some impressive jazzy drumming from Steve Belger. The thing is, that
as good as they clearly are (they certainly live up to their reputation)
we’ve been rather spoiled by the extra dimensions of both the Original
Silence album and the Two Bands And A Legend album in recent times – this
in comparison seems a little flat and dare we say polite and predictable
and really as free form avant jazz noise goes, well, it really needs to
be right out there to grab us now, this is a little run of the mill...
www.solarfire.co.uk
BIG BIG TRAIN – The Different
Machine (English Electric) - Let be frank here, recent output from Bournemouth’s
Big Big Train has been little short of middle of the road dreadful. Bland
pedestrian AOR pop rock greyness that they tried to peddle as prog and
something that you really did need to avoid. Back in their early 90’s demo
tape days Big Big Train threatened interesting things, somewhere along
the line they lost their way completely. Something’s happened here though,
they’re remembered where they came from, this is a half decent rather worthy
neo prog concept album of quite some considerable depth. Impressive
melodic prog adventure that falls somewhere between Spock’s Beard, the
clean-cut epicness of Amplifier or Mew and Trick Of The Tail period Genesis
– if that sounds like you kind of thing then Big Big Train have a rather
positive surprise waiting for you – www.bigbigtrain.com
or www.myspace.com/wwwmyspacecombigbigtrain
THE BOMBS OF ENDURING FREEDOM
– The Bombs Of Enduring Freedom (D.T.M) – Cut up paranoia and punkoid industrial
space rock CCTV barcode manipulation. Brainwashed cut ‘n paste fundamentalist
vs fundamentalist. Made in “The Council Flat of Mass Destruction”, The
Bombs are a media manipulation that tastes of Hawkwind, Ministry, Killing
Joke, Ian Brown, The Orb, secret flights, orange suits and post cards from
Baghdad. Death is glory and god wants you to buy this (or something like
that). Identity theft and twenty-four hour surveillance and sample this.
cut up that – a suspect package holiday in someone else’s misery. Samples,
riffs, soundbites. Lead by James Fogarty (formally of Ewigkeit), nice manipulation
of the BBC News 24 theme there... Where is G.I Jesus? Who are those neo
cons? Can you get this in your local shopping mall? The answers are probably
not to be found over at www.thebombsofenduringfreedom.com
PEDIGREE – Growing Apart
(Nailboard) – Dark-edged and rather impressive, Killing Joke flavoured
industrial metal. They’ve been around since 1993, they’re from Tallinn,
Estonia. Powerful, dark, churning in a rather impressive Godflesh, Young
Gods, Neurosis – hints of dub, dark-art, post rock, trip-hop and a positive
experimental edge that makes them well worth your time. This album actually
appears to have been released in 2005 – the impressive twelve sliced album
arrived in our lives this week via a great big package from “The heaviest
Estonian label in the world” – there’s some genuine avant moments here,
up there with the bands we name dropped and this is highly recommended
www.myspace.com/nailboardrecords
or www.myspace.com/pedigree1
THARAPHITA – Primeval Force
(Nailboard) – Estonian pagan metal so they say – epic black battle-ready
sword-waving metal with just a touch of folk is what it sounds like. Think
Bathory meets Trivium with a healthy hint of Pandemonium period Celtic
Frost. A little lacking in terms of dimension but hey, they’re well worth
your time – this is their 2005 album www.myspace.com/nailboardrecords
or www.myspace.com/tharaphita
THARAPHITA – Iidsetel Sunkjatel
Radadel (Nailboard) - And in to 2007 via more of their 13th century Estonian
battle calls and yes more of their Primeval Force, a little more dimension
this time though, they have indeed built on their previous release. Lost
a little of the folk and added a little more black metal power to their
this time slightly more conventional battle metal intensity. Apparently
the translation of the album title is On Path Ancient And Dark – give me
this rather than Dragonforce or Trivium any day of the week. www.myspace.com/tharaphita
NITROUS – Dominant Force
(Nailboard) – You guessed it, Estonian again. This time apparently lead
by a drag racing champion. Brutal thrashcore that’s drenched in “gasoline
and nitrous oxide”. Released in 2006, a brutal bombardment of speeding
riffs and thrashing old school metal of a Medulla Nocte intensity – think
Medulla in a runaway truck. These Nailboard people certainly know what
they’re doing, they’re setting themselves rather healthy standards. www.nailboard.org
EAST TRADING WANG – Favela
Yayo Caipirinha (Nailboard) – Colourfully heavy grunge-edged melodic weighty
locked-on alternative rock that stands out from the crowd – nothing that
obvious here. Tough, driving, meaty and yet again rather impressive. Kind
of remind us of Cortizone - www.myspace.com/nailboardrecords
LOITS - Must Album (Nailboard)
– More black metal flavours, this time laced with melodic colour and a
hint of a gothic/rock n’ roll edge – a mix of In The Woods, Immortal, Venom
and a touch of New Model Army in their with a healthy fingerprint of their
own, a uniquely Estonian fingerprint? This is their 2007 album - no real
idea what they’re singing about, not that up on my Estonian. They use restrained
power and emotion rather then brutal speed - www.myspace.com/loits
THE SIN:DECAY (Nailboard)
– Colourfully cold and clean-edged melodic electronic goth-laced programming
that’s intersected with a corrosive metal riff or two. They’re from Finland,
they’ve evolved out of And Oceans and they’re for you people who like bands
in the VNV Nation/Kovenant vein - www.myspace.com/sindecay
MUST MISSA – Martyr of Wrath
(Nailbomb) – Relentlessly intense old school punked-up raw thrash metal
for people who like it violent, shouty, crunching and right in their faces
in a no messing no frills top quality studded arm band and bullet belt
Venom/Warfare/Exodus/Kreator/Slayer/Sodom kind of way. Another band from
Tallinn, Estonia and another band well worth checking out – www.myspace.com/mustmissa
METSATOLL – Terast Mis Hangund
Me Hinge 10218 (Nailbomb) – Now Metsatoll really do sound like a band from
Estonia. Once again I have no idea what they’re actually singing about,
the title translates as Steel Frozen in Our Souls. Sounds like a rather
colourful mix of what I imagine Estonian pagan/drinking/fighting/folk music
to sound like - a kind of epic blend of bombastic metal, odd time signatures
and traditional folk based around what I’m told is old Estonian runo-singing.
Traditional instruments (including what we’re intriguingly told is a stinking
drum) weave around metal riffs and thrashy drums. Seems they’ve become
“a paragon or a symbol of the preservation and revival of national culture
and the Estonian language” – I really hope that if that is the case then
things are done in the right way here. Nationalism bothers me, healthy
preservation (and evolution) of artistic culture that has some kid of root
in a place and time – fine. I have no idea what Metsatoll are singing about,
they sound rather good, they’re intriguing and almost certainly unique
and their metal sounds rather like Tarantula Hawk (that is a massive
compliment). This is really rather good, Metsatoll are well well worth
your time and further investigation - www.myspace.com/nailboardrecords
or www.myspace.com/metsatoll

OF THE WEEK
TINY
MASTERS OF TODAY – Hey Mr DJ (Mute) – Double helping of cool on cool –
lead track is a gritty slice of soul-filled lo-fi raw edged fuzzing garage
guitar stomp from the duo who’s average is just twelve. Powered by the
drums and raw production skills of Mr Russell Sims (of the Blues Explosion).
Then you get the Liars remix – you don’t need to be told who it is, only
one band gets a sound like that – locked on, stripped down and Liar’d up,
everything those Liars go near turns to gold, Lairs really are the coolest
band in the world right now.. You’ll find the Liars mix on the CD version.
The seven inch meanwhile boasts an electro bleep and vocoder remix from

THE
BLEEPS – Dull Thud (Listen For Pleasure) - Wired garage pop with a little
bit of an angular edge and a bite of a confident knowing sharp thud of
impact. They’re a two piece, apparently they’re half a band who we knew
rather positively as Father Of Boon. Dirty, wired and awkwardly good –
www.myspace.com/thebleeps
MACHINE
HEAD – Halo (Roadrunner) – Single off one of the top metal albums of the
year, Machine Head go on moving forward with their intelligent forward
looking challenging crunch.
THE
VIOLETS – Trouble Of Keneat (Angular) – Sounds like a classic slice of
Germanic new wave Siouxsie And The Banshees/Hazel O’Connor from 1982. Biting
bass and sharp delivery, I guess what goes around always comes around again
and again, no bad thing, we like the sound of breaking glass and that hint
of Gossip drive, a decent single – www.angularrecords.net
