here on the flip side of reason? Till Death Do You Part |
Over
here on the flip side of reason? Thank you Ms Palmer and Boston in general
and how dangerous is it to have this Dresden Dolls album here when the
beautiful thing isn’t actually out until June? There are obsessive people
who would kill if they knew and don’t you just love the smell of fresh
Dresden Dolls in the morning, don’t you just love waiting for packages
from Boston. There are not enough hours in the days and more days in the
week to fit everything in please and there is pure reason in the revolution
of ideas and contradictions and let it flow on ruby Tuesday. Does any of
this make sense? Does anything ever? Does it always feel better in gloves?
Got that taste of red wings and flying with a need to be tied
down again or maybe just some more contradictions from somewhere or other.
Shark white, shark bone, shark bite, crank it up and let it go... another
Organ and almost Friday again..
These are the things that
have been in our ears this week, please explore and if it sounds interesting
then just hit the links and make your own minds up, our reviews and thoughts
are mere signposts designed to guide you to the things you might like to
feast on yourselves... don’t you just love the instant hit of the www. |
IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME? |
IMPERIAL
LEISURE have now been added to the Beachdown Festival bill on August 25th
- the festival takes place on the beautiful Southern English Downs just
outside Brighton, good looking bill as well - Gogol Bordello, De La Soul,
Reverend & The Makers (OK, go for a bear while they’re on) and Lightspeed
Champion have all been confirmed for the new Sussex festival Beachdown
which is being staged over that busy busy busy festival weekend, the August
Bank Holiday, 22-25 Aug. Also on the bill are Infadels, The Hat and Roy
Ayers and it looks like one of the more enjoyable places to be that weekend..
Hey look, our work here is almost done now, Imperial Leisure are on their
way now, our part is over - two buzzing singles that brought them some
more than deserves attention when everyone had been pretty much ignoring
them for a good few years. Two singles that you need to grab now while
you still can before the silly prices on Ebay kick in – found a handful
of the first single here today so they’re on the mailorder page, Yes indeed,
our work is done, looks like they’ll be busy at the festivals all summer
long and all over your daytime radio and TV if their people get it right
- big if, but hey, the band are there, they have the songs, they have the
energy, they have the work ethic... as much as I hate to be cynical here,
but just how many great bands do we have to put on a plate only to watch
the London music industry make a complete pigs ear of it all? Nah, no way
they can’t mess this one up, surely not – ladies and gents, our work is
done, for all your future Imperial Leisure wants and needs head on over
to www.imperial-leisure.co.uk |
THINGS TO GET SHOUTING ABOUT? |
Like
we already said up there, THE DRESDEN DOLLS have a new album ready
to go, that’s right, they’re putting out No, Virgina, a new collection
of songs, on June 2nd. Well, not an album full of entirely new material,
per se, but a gathering of new songs, old demos that have now been recorded
‘properly’, B-sides and unreleased material from the Yes, Virginia
sessions. Those of you paying attention will have heard a track from the
new album on the Organ Resonance FM radio show last weekend – more from
us up front of the release I’m sure, doesn’t sound like a collection of
tracks not good enough to make the ‘real’ albums to us. .Great version
of Pretty In Pink – www.dresdendolls.com
See
only last week we were on about proper record shops and why you should
go to them and how there would be no Organ with out Cob over there and
now this from Manchester's finest metal crew I-DEF-I. The band tell
us they are happy to announce both a rare acoustic performance and an after-show
party either side of their forthcoming hometown show @ Manchester Club
Academy on Saturday April 19th. At 2pm on April 19th vocalist Chris Maher
and guitarist Tom Clements will perform a short, instore acoustic set at
VIBES RECORDS in Bury as part of NATIONAL RECORD STORE DAY - on
which hundreds of independent record stores across the globe will
simultaneously link and act as one with the purpose of celebrating the
culture and unique place that they occupy both in their local communities
and nationally. More info at www.vibesrecords.co.uk
or www.recordstoreday.com.
Following the show at the Academy the band has announced an after party
at local club CAGED ASYLUM. Fans 18+ can show their gig ticket on the door
to get entry to the club night at a reduced rate of £4. More info

DEMO TIME |
We're
just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time
for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when
we tell you it's good then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
KOPEK - This is just wonderful
- wonderful sound, wonderful artwork/packaging, uplifting creativity and
a rather unique sound – music making an creative DIY at its very best.
Kopek are from Brighton and it appears they can be anything anywhere between
one person with a guitar and loops to a full five piece band with drums,
clarinets, violins and flutes – these two pieces are just beautiful. Delicate
whispered resonance, a precise focused blend of mesmerizing post-rock and
inviting welcoming alt.folk. A creative delight, a whispered piece of minimalist
beauty. Two beautiful songs, two richly textured sculpted songs that just
promise so so much and even it should be that Kopek never ever do another
thing then this would two track treasure would be more than enough. A special
CD from a rather special band. www.myspace.com/kopekmusic

CHECK OUT
Jessssssssssssus, got this
demo here from this band I won’t bother naming. Look at this opening line
on the press release - “The ********* were born in the Royal Festival
Hall, overcome by the raw power of Iggy Pop’s 2007 Meltdown gig, a beautiful
evening and a choice selection of beers...” Gawd help us! I’d hate old
Iggy to hear this insipid politeness and know he inspired it! This makes
the Beautiful South seem like Maggot Slayer Overdrive on a very black and
pissed off black day at the bottom of the blackest ocean in comparison.
Lyrics so wet we’re embarrassed to be in the same room as them. Sarah records,
once they had stopped laughing, would reject this for being too much of
a wet lettuce! Is this how Iggy inspires you? What is wrong with you people,
you sure you were drinking actual beer at that gig? Are you sure you were
even there? You should come out of an Iggy gig wanting to be street walking
cheetahs with your ice cream cornets full of napalm not sound like the
insipid Field Mice too scared to leave your bedroom in case there’s a fluffy
cat about! Don’t send us things like this and tell us it was Iggy and beer
wot made you do it! You know it makes us mad, we've got your address now,
let me call up Rip Cruncher, he'll want to come around and drink your shandy
and eat your copies of Raw Power that probably have C86 compilations hidden
inside...
RIOT:NOISE – Now here’s a
band who sound like they may have been born in a haze of bad beer at an
Iggy Pop gig overcome by the raw power – that and maybe one too many Motley
Crue wreckords and Poison overloads but hey, how welcome is this after
the damn unmentionable Hillfields up there... Two slices of raw stripped
down low slung glam/punk from Bristol and all very obvious but what the
hell, stuff like this is supposed to be a cornball of obviousness and the
spring in my head is all twisted now – www.myspace.com/riotnoisemusic

NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK |
This
week the best new things we’ve been listening to were...
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
PAS CHIC CHIC – Au Contraire
(Semprini) – Never heard of Pas Chic Chic before, put it on without a clue,
instant love! A beautiful blend of seductive 60’s French pop and Farfisa/Mellotron
wonky psychedelic delight. Don’t know who they are or where they’re from
and I’m deliberately not looking at the sleeve or the press release here
until I’ve absorbed it all. Classic French pop with all that effervescent
warmth and that fluttering hint of not so innocent naughtiness that can
only come with delicious 60’s/70’s French art/film/pop. Male and female
voices taking turns with lead vocal lines, both equally intriguing and
seductive, confident and in control, occasionally laced with a darkside
and a hint of the sinister. Classic 60’s French art-pop delight that’s
fused with a feel of now and hints of shoegazer flavoured post-rock adventure
– this is not just some retro thing, feels very much something of the present
rather than the past. Yes it figures that this is Roger Teller-Craig from
Godspeed! You Black Emperor (as well as Fly Pam Am and Set Fire To Flames)
and guitarist Radwen Moumnah is from celebrated hardcore band Cursed (a
band who also featured Godspeed! And Silver Mt. Zion people), all five
of them have pedigree. Marie-Douce sings and plays Farfisa, Maxo-korg and
that glorious Mellotron (she also publishes her own zine called Amazine).
The band are from Montreal and this is their very fine debut album and
yes I have studied the sleeve and read the press release now and this really
is a treat of an album that really doesn’t need too many words – open you
hearts and fly to www.paschicchic.com
or www.semprinirecords.com
ALSO
CHECK OUT
TRIBUTE TO NOTHING – Breathe
How You Want To Breath (Lockjaw) – Most of their English peers threw in
the towel long ago, Tribute always were a little more committed and indeed
determined than most. I’ve lost track on how many albums they’ve put out
now – they did start out in their very early teens though, they’re probably
still at school now – oh alright, they’re probably still in their late
twenties. Still that familiar Tribute To Nothing sound, those gritty hardcore
trademarks of theirs, those Unsane flavours and that throaty vocal delivery.
Not just churning it out though, the four of them are challenging themselves,
adding to their sound, colouring things with fine-lined detail and mellow
moments laced with the occasional female vocal line or post-hardcore refinement
and all without ever betraying what they’ve always been about. Day
in day out, that fire still burns inside – never off the road, mostly in
mainland Europe these days (actually seems like years since we actually
got to catch them live). Tribute made another good record then - a gritty,
real hardcore record delivered with the now expected amounts of attitude,
imagination, challenging colour and far more emotion than any of those
silly fashion parade hairdresser bands that clutter up stages and glossy
pages these days. Nice one Tribute, there’s always a bit of hope to be
found here and there in these broken in half times when Tribute To Nothing
are making albums this good... www.tributetonothing.com |
PSYCHOCHARGER – Curse Of
The Psycho (GMR) - Tales of redneck grave-robbing zombies from outer space
setting up moonshine stills and not caring enough to wash their hands (or
change their underwear) . That and back from the dead motorcycle outlaws
hell-bent on revenge and there ain’t no difference between saints and sinners
and red right hands and Carl Perkins running down the Misfits on Billy
Idols bike with the Bad Seeds and Alien Sex Fiend in chase. Or how about
strange little green men in graveyards late at night, wanting your reproductive
glands? We talking zombiecore psychobilly rock ‘n roll, clanging basslines
and don’t go out alone after the sun goes down or they’ll have your genitals
in a jamjar. Damn fine psycho-zombie rockabilly for Meteors fans and Guana
Batz everywhere – www.psychocharger.com
or www.gmrmusic.se
SIDEBLAST – Flight of The
Moth (Cyclone Empire) – Rather good extreme metal that comes with an orchestral
undertone, an onslaught of death and scream and slices of chaotic hardcore
field noise. See, it doesn’t have to always be the same. An album laced
with light and shade, with challenging depth - never ever straying
from those extreme metal foundations and does the flap of a butterfly’s
wing in Brazil set of a tornado in Texas? Sideblast are from France and
this is an ambitious blend of extreme/death/thrash metal, a powerful rage
of melody and violence that takes in the excesses of Emperor, Strapping
Young Lad and laces it all with some genuinely different sounds and bites
and other rock challenges – impressive extreme metal that stands out from
the crowd – recommended. www.myspace.com/cycloneempire
or www.myspace.com/sideblast
NAVEL – Frozen Souls (Louisville)
– Bleached nirvana and raw grunged up moody blues based punk rock from
Switzerland. Spot on production and while they may not be breaking any
new ground here they’ve certainly got the sound and the attitude nailed
down just right – they seemed a little more adventurous back on that demo
we reviewed and played on the radio last year. Is It You with that extra
voice on vocals is where they get really out there and start to really
challenge, the six minute doom-laden For A While keeps them going and takes
them further out there. Mostly they’re just a classic early 90’s grunge
band and you know, that’s kind of refreshing in an odd kind of way here
in 2008. You know what, I rather like Navel – www.myspace.com/navelofswitzerland
ANDI SEX GANG – Inventing
New Destruction (Pink Noise) – Sex Gang Children frontman and an album
that seems to have been around for a year or so already – just landed here
though so we’re telling you about it today - and those strangest days are
still before you, discover it and your strangest musical days will be ahead
of you (where have you been? Your poker face is your mistake). And his
kriminal tangos are sounding as invigorating as ever. That Batcave birthed
third position and electro-noir cabaret tales of contractions and shut
in the back looking through the looking glass. Lost track on how many solo
albums there have been now, twenty years or more - never less then stimulating
and rewarding. All kinds of psychic current 93 TVs and celebrations of
dust and death, wake up and believe, forever happy. Dark psychedelia and
the turning of everything on a naked head and sing sing the piper sing.
Has Andi Sex Gang ever sounded so accomplished and twisted? Has he ever
sounded so good? Sing sing the piper sing, smash and grab all those dreams
and Byzantine Rhineline Barbies. Life is a bitch and then you die – or
is it? Or is it? Or is it? First shot, in to the heartland, foot and mouth,
let it in, let this album in, sow the seed, there’s so much left, hope
I never have to lie – easy to let some things and some people go bye (or
by), this is an exceptionally good album and you really should go and explore
the beautifully bizarre world of Andi Sex Gang, there really aren’t many
worlds like it and there’s far more than dust and death and Berlin and
London that will get inside your head.- not just another aging fading gothgod
then, oh no - highly recommended – www.myspace.com/andisexgang
or www.andisexgang.com
BURNING SKIES – Greed. Filth,
Abuse, Corruption (Lifeforce) – in which yet another band, this time from
Bristol (although they could be from anywhere on the planet with this conforming
generic sound) grind and blast their extreme metal way through some napalm
peeling death-throws. All the usual riffs, blastbeats, gutteral screams,
low-end cookie monster vocal and how very very good at it they are – professional,
tight, well produced – just what is the point here? Why make a record that
sounds like four hundred records we already heard? Why do these extreme
metal bands all seem to want to conform, pull on the uniform, and make
music that, while being very good at sounding like their peers and their
record collections, why do they want to make music that adds nothing what
so ever – what is the point? If you want some generic grindcore metal than
Burning Skies are as good as anyone, indeed better than most, that we’ve
heard in recent times - really don’t get why they don’t want
to add just a little bit of identity, a hint of something that’s adding
just little more, just a touch of X factor please – right, review
over, job done and now I shall remove this disc from the player and almost
certainly never ever feel the need to ever play it again. – www.myspace.com/burningskies
or www.lifeforcerecords.com
HERRSCHAFT – Tesla (Code666)
– Futuristic electro metal, and a buzzing frothing machine driven blend
of death metal and EBM bleep and crash from France - for fans of N.I.N,
G.N.A and any other industrial metal band you can cut down to just those
three initial letters... A global noise attack then, and actually if you
like this kind of stuff and you like being stranded in the Slimelight with
all the dayglo and black and cyberdog dancers then Herrschaft are really
rather good...www.h-noise.com
BARELY BREATHING – Relive
The Regret (Casket) – Modern blend of melodic/brutal thrash metal/metal-core
from South Africa – everything thrown in the pot, boiling and bubbling
over and waiting for all you followers of 36Crazyfists and Breed 77 and
Divine Heresy and oh you know what I mean, modern heavy metal core, they
do it well enough, fire inside, burning within.... – www.barelybreathing.co.sa
or www.coprorecords.co.uk
MELEEH – Heartland (Black
Star Foundation) - Oh look, singer sounds like he trying to lay a large
metal egg with all kinds of rusty jagged nuts and bolts and bits sticking
out. He’s screaming and yelling and clearly in punchable pain all the way
through, he mever stops screaming in that irritating annoying way – punchable
indeed, no sympathy here, shut the hell up a lay the damn egg in silence
you damn screaming yelling annoying wuss – unlistanble vocals for people
who want to be screamed at for hours and hours in some kind of relentless
bratty pained kind of way. Hours and hours he’s been screaming now,
what d’ya mean, we’re only on track five!! Pass me the sledgehammer and
stand well back, the only humane action – oh I know, we have this policy
of only reviewing the things we like and its all positive and things are
all tweety-bird nice and we have no time for the average and hell there’s
a limit to our patience! This is dreadful, this is painful in the worst
sense of the word, I like pain, this is just unlikable – if you want some
more dreadful unbearable screamo beano meano emo and you actualyl like
Enter Shiwhatever and that dreadful Bullet for my Tantrum band and oh gawd
why? Why!!? No one deserves to have to listen to this, but hey, live and
let live and if you really must then there’s the link to the damn Swedish
screamers with the punchable singer – www.myspace.com/meleeh
– oh look, you can have this copy, first person to give us a reasonably
good reason why we should stick this in an envelope and send it to them
can have the damn thing... I really didn’t deserve to have to listen to
this...

OF THE WEEK
HAYMAN,
WATKINS, TROUT & LEE – Sly And The Family Stone (Fortuna Pop) – Bluegrass
from East London, they don’t sound American though, despite that simple
bluegrass with those fiddles and banjos and tastes of shandy made with
flat lemonade – Darren Heyman from Hefner with delightful tales and being
that kept man and how to afford those presents she deserves – just beautiful
country tales from deepest London and shoe shopping and breezy bluegrass
and yes girls shoes are great - and so is this, can’t wait for the album
that’s out in May – delightful in every way and nothing what so ever to
do with Sly And The Family from what I can work out – www.myspace.com/haymanwatkinstroutandlee

ROYAL
TREATMENT PLANT – Get Played (Light) – Fizzing alternative cutting-edge
indie pop that grows and grows until you can’t help but spring around with
skewed jumpiness – let’s all go out, get played and make new friends –
oh we didn’t come here for that. Bouncy synthy alt.guitar pop urgency and
Royal Treatment Plant at their girl-voiced infectious vitriolic poppy punky
jumpy best. And then there’s the b-side Heart And Minds - a refined piece
of mellow drama, eye opening emotion and another side to Royal Treatment
Plant – things are coming together rather nicely, took a little time to
get in to these two songs, glad I gave it the time they clearly deserve,
trust and let it rule your mind... www.myspace.com/royaltreatmentplant

Death Do You Part - Marry Yourself
Here in the performance art
world this week we find ourselves at mercy theof the great general public,
for the Fierce Festival top bods have opened the doors to YOU. The Fierce
programme offers an array of wonderfully sensual, dark, and humorous treats
from which we can choose. I would like to personally entice
you with the fabulous talents of L. Gabrielle Penabaz; a New York Creator
that My Fierce Festival are bringing to the table for 2008's International
Art Festival. Penabaz is a marvel from the New York scene, a multi-media
artist whose work includes fifteen years of video, music and live performance
taken worldwide. Till Death Do You Part - Marry Yourself! is a small part
of her infamous T.H.o.S.E. (The House of St. Eve) avant-garde events that
twist together costumed staff, custom drinks and decadent performances.
Performances all of which subtly inspired by her theatrical rock band,
St. Eve who toured the US and and opened for artists such as Gary Numan,
Coil, and VNV Nation. have lived with yourself long enough. It's
time to make a commitment. Yourself. Of course that's daunting, so
L.Gabrielle Penabaz is here to you. The non-denominational priestess will
bring harmony to the inner bride & groom of each lucky participant.
There will be ritual items on hand - pieces, funky rings, flowers, candles,
incense, music - like Vegas but And of course, a multiple-choice list of
vows. You can come fully with all your own gear or choose from the campy
selection provided. all in fun but it's deep too. It's up to you! You can
be of any age and the ritual as many times as you like for the rest of
your life. It's all baby. Penabaz is just here to get you going. No in-laws
required. Priestess, orders art to be kitsch and meaningful at the
same time, taking as far and as deep as you, the participant want to go.
You are able to your beliefs that, yes, you really would marry yourself,
(monogamy may may not be essential of course!), You could go with friends,
each of you a little time to be committed to yourself, whilst there to
relish each nuptials. You might want to take the time out to be completely
alone with thoughts and allow the priestess to encourage your faith in
yourself. Really is up to you. I feel this is what Performance
Art should about - the very word ‘performance’ should conjure enjoyable
images of play-acting and merriment. Yes, there is a definite thought provoking
beneath the glitter and camp, and yes, it is 'performance art', but with
Death Do You Part…’ there is the element of humor, allowing the huge barrier
between live art and audiences to be broken down enabling them to on an
entertaining and understandable platform. I write in that my
words will encourage you to GO VOTE VOTE VOTE for the scrumptious DEATH
DO YOU PART - MARRY YOURSELF! performed by the equally delectable Penabaz
- as with out you there is no wedding - GO VOTE NOW! vote go to www.myfiercefestival.co.uk
