| AND
I ASK YOU, WELL HOW D'YA LIKE THEM APPLES? |
The
imagined corners of this round world and there must be somewhere and what
about the development of materialism over sense said the junkie to the
thief? Something a little more than an ‘otdog if you know what I mean.
Let me make some coffee, I haven’t had any coffee yet! Hang on, push-bikes
come without warning? There is only one substance in the universe and you’re
wondering if I got stuck in the fates of the gates of hell with the seams
kept straight right? Aristotle believed in what? Basic stuff out of which
every musical note was decreed? Oh look, your music depresses me, and has
the bulshit crawled out of Camden yet? Stayed well away last weekend. According
to Aristotle most music was not to be believed in and the intelligence
and belief that underpinned the purpose of the universe and all we have
are atoms bombinating – bombinating, I like that – bombinating about for
no musical purpose – repress them, no new ideas. It was so much the thinkers
and Plato and there is matter and mind and the immortal soul and why were
the last twenty seven CDs I’ve listen to just not worth writing or caring
or shouting about? The world, the flesh and the devil. I was only to spend
one hour in the gates of hell, something to do with a Goddess and did the
kettle boil yet? Descarte? What did he bring to it? Spiritual realm? Material
realm? Oh I can’t begin to imagine where the hare boxing around is now.
A certain colour? A certain taste? Common sensory experience? A nicely
ordered rounded world and so where did I put my coffee and A Cup Of Tea?
I like this one, all subjective, bit that is the point, move away from
the idea and re-inject? Spirits to believe in, intellectual nourishment?
Atomism? Hobbs? Everything a body? A great dam? Damn? A torrent coming
down? Liberty of thought? Liberty 37? Pulkas? Too much sugar in this coffee?
Can I just end this particular paragraph with the benefit of hindsight
and a new red dress that’s the same as the old red dress? Bring the human
mind in to the Cartesian picture? Oh enough of this free-thinking, all
that exist are Atoms and here’s some more music that doesn’t sound like
all the other music and more of the things that revolve around music and
where are we? There? Pain with an ‘e’ – bombinating.
These are the things that
have been in our ears this week, please explore and if it sounds interesting
then just hit the links and make your own minds up, our reviews and thoughts
are mere signposts designed to guide you to the things you might like to
feast on yourselves... don’t you just love the instant hit of the www. |
IS THIS WHY YOU BOOKMARKED ME? |
ART
ATTACK - May 1st-15th sees the return to the capital of the Street Blitz
– the interactive way to conduct guerrilla art. The idea is to use the
whole city as an open gallery. Install your art, or creative urban landscape
subversion, and then post up details on the Blitz website map with text
and pics to encourage others to visit / enjoy / join in. As the organisers
say, "The corporate image factory doesn't ask your permission to push images
in your face so neither should we seek consent in order to leave our own
mark on the city..." Get yer paint out and see www.streetblitz.org |
THINGS TO GET SHOUTING ABOUT? |
It
would appear that Mayday 2008 is the 300th anniversary of the last free
Mayday before the Grand Jury suppression of the traditional May Fayre in
central London. This was a riotous, raucous celebration of fertility and
freedom. From 1st of May each year, and for up to two weeks afterwards,
the people stopped working, rejected their normal routines then danced,
drank, laughed and made love in the streets, jeering at the controlling
figures of the Church and State, turning everything they could upside down.
It
was known as such "a nursery of vice and debauchery", that after 1708 the
authorities, having had of this dangerous freedom and subversion, shut
it down. Although there were some attempts at reviving it, the creeping
spectre of gentrification made it couldn't continue, as the area of the
fayre was gradually built over with palaces and playgrounds for the rich.
To
commemorate this anniversary, and the still thriving tradition of over
the top state control the Space Hijackers and the Metropolitan Police say
they are to proudly present a re-enactment of the end of this traditional
May Fayre. Our modern-day interpretation of the cycle of uprising and suppression
is in keeping the attempted repression of parties, protests and gatherings
enacted by the state throughout the ages.
In
Act One, the Space Hijackers will be inviting people to join a Mayday street
party in it’s traditional home, with bands, food and revelry. This will
be later followed in Act Two by the Police Players, who will be re-enacting
a classic clamping down on liberties and freedom of the people.
All
are welcome to this bring food, bands, mead, rum, codpieces, bales of hay,
18th century strumpets, music, laughter, corsets, bustles, trouble, spit
roasts and virgins dancing around poles. Bring your own performances and
creative ways of celebrating the day; and turning things upside down for
spring. Everyone's invited. We naturally don’t condone any of this here
at Organ, stay inside and consume, go to one of those big expensive festivals
and have nothing to do with any of this, and what ever you do don’t go
any website like this one www.spacehijackers.org
– you know this is all wrong, do not party without permission.

DEMO TIME |
We're
just going to tell you about the very very best once a week, no more time
for the average, only the most exciting - we're very very selective, when
we tell you it's good then it really is goooooooood
DEMO
OF THE WEEK
NARRATION – Impressive alt.indie
refinement and tomorrow’s door found tonight. Look up... A four piece from
London, clever simplicity and accessible glow. Epic in a confident Coldplay,
Editors kind of way (that was damn lazy of me, they’re nothing like either
of those bands, not that there’s anything wrong with either). Narration
have more enough of their own in there to stand way out on their own -
to tear the ground apart, and that voice is rather impressive – Dan Holt
is his name. People are talking about this band and these impressive tracks
will more than tell you why – see, we didn’t need to leave the capital
after all, there it was, right there on Strawberry Hill and with all that
radiant beauty and those epic guitars and two steps forward to lift the
heaviest of hearts... ooooo this is good, there’s always another band just
when you think your cured. This is extremely impressive, this is oozing
class already. Three impressive progressive sky touching tracks laced with
soothing hand-washing melody, a message for the king and look up, look
up... www.myspace.com/narrationmusic
DEMO
OF THE WEEK 2
HOT DAMN – Rather good instrumental
band, one of those things we’d vaguely call post-rock and yes, we’ve had
this one here for oh, far longer than we should have had without writing
about it – sorry, though we had already, better late than never and we
did play it on the radio already several times and hey, you try keep all
this under control! This is positively good in an imaginative rewarding
Don Cab/Battles kind of way without ever just being another one of those
post-rock Don Cab bands. Refined and just different enough to be worth
your time, money and love. They’re from Brighton and this is a cool sounding,
good looking slice of DIY hand packaged five track CD action that you can
find via www.730club.tk
ALSO CHECK OUT
DIVINE
CHAOS – Standard issue, competent, professional enough thrash metal band
from Slough (that’s the South of England, they sound likE they could be
from anywhere in the world), nothing you haven’t heard before, they do
it as well as a million other bands have done in the last twenty five years
– Testament, Xentrix, Exodus, Slammer, Kreator blah blah blah, sound like
they’re having a blast, better than hanging around on street corners, they
do it well enough, better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick should
they be at a venue near you – www.myspace.com/divinechaosband
BIRDEATSBABY
– China Doll - Piano led female voiced drama and dark-edged pop cabaret
from Brighton. That phrasing, that voice, those lyrics and pretty much
everything else about them might just be a little bit too much of a Dresden
Dolls thing right now, could be worth sticking around to see what develops
though. There’s some potential here, some clever ambition and a charmingly
sinister undercurrent, that and a load of black and red feathers all over
our floor now. These songs are alive with infectious potential, little
trophies and things... www.birdeatsbaby.co.uk

NEW ALBUMS WE’RE LISTENING TO THIS WEEK |
This
week the best new things we’ve been listening to were...
ALBUM
OF THE WEEK
QUEEN ELEPHANTINE – Surya
(Self release) - Brooding moody slowly evolving dark doomy psychedelia
and excommunicated standing stones waiting for the sun to rise as red as
dragon eyes. Aural fornication, astral mastication and meditative space
rock that sounds more like it came from just before the Summer Solstice
morning at a Stonehenge free festival than the place is actually comes
from. They’re from New York City and we’re eight minutes in to a rather
impressive sixteen minute epic and you know what? I’m not sure if they
sound like anything or anyone we’ve heard before. A far more enlightened
and organic Sleep maybe? A hint of Acid Mother Temple? Birds like you’ve
never seen before (like that time walking back to the stones just after
Hawkwind when those six or seven guys in black hoods with great big axes
on their shoulders walked past going the other way and no one gave them
a second look). Incantations and moons pulling, meditative brooding and
trudging along in such a upliftingly sludgy way. A dense smoky fog of soothing
distortion and repetitive progression, lysergic delight and a slow sludge
of spiritual warmth and middle Eastern organic goodness and hurry on sundown,
see what tomorrow brings... Played just right, droned just right, spot
on drums, spot on minimal bass rumble that opens the fifth track - a twenty
seven minute brood called Bison. Spot on everything - highly recommended
- www.myspace.com/queenelephantine
or http://queenelephantine.clfrecords.com
ALSO
CHECK OUT
ANSUR – Warring Factions
(Candlelight) - Now is this a work of the finest quality or a pile of old
nonsense? Certainly provoked a reaction when we played a track on the radio
last weekend – hate mail from fishing boats (three births down from the
Candy), we love it! It is indeed your hate on which we feed (that and stolen
Blitz lines). Epic prog metal that deviates between some kind of early
Marillion ambition packed dramatic melody and hints of something that’s
almost jazz-fusion via some old school NWOBHM flavoured hard rock that
has a root or two in Scandinavian black metal. Classic progressive hard
rock, soaring guitars, proper metal and a misplaced Grendel via Emperor’s
backyard. No nonsense here, epic battle prog and expansive shape-shifting
70’s flavoured hard rock from Norway, preposterously good. No holding
back, songs that go on for ever, everything including the kitchen sink,
an epic work of the finest quality – www.myspace.com/ansursite
or www.ansursite.com or www.candlelight.co.uk |
TRICLOPS! – Out Of Africa (Alternative Tentacles) - What do you think of
these apples? I don’t even need to like them to buy them... We’re twisting
and turning again and these proudly marginalised Americans might just end
up in Guantanamo if they dish out fruit like this. Call the thought police
and get their cute orange boiler-suits ready. We gots ourselves some people
from Lower Forty Eight, Bottles And Skulls, Fleshies and if that doesn’t
get you curious then how about a member of the legendary Victim’s Family
– oh yes, serious alternative twisted San Francisco pronkoid punk rock
royalty jumping oh your coat tails – Larry, Johnny, Christian and Phil.
Stop the boat captain, I just worked out what was bugging me about that
forth track Duende War, it just hit me! My God, they don’t half sound like
the mighty Camp Blackfoot at their early flying story telling you’ll-never-take-us-alive
best. Planting the seeds of your demise with twisted turning epic alternative
metal adventure, the whole things sound very much like Camp Blackfoot –
that’s a very good thing and there’s an important issue of substance here
that they’ve clearly addressed. A manic undertone, a slight paranoia? Or
just healthy finger-pointing in the great AT/Dead Kens tradition. Twisted
punk-prog end twisted turning epicness - they talk of acid-punk-prog, whatever
we (or they) call it, I think you get the idea here. Intense and extreme
but never about noise and violence (it so often is with so many others),
this is epic in a Faith No More, Jane’s Addiction, Melvins manner, and
yes, in a Victim’s Family way and you’ll never take them alive – this is
a very very very good thing. Around here we think Victim’s Family deserved
a lot more recognition than they ever got, that Family vibe is here and
you’ll never take this alive... oh yes, pure big ugly shark bate. Recommended.

AND WELL SOMETIMES WE
CAN'T LET IT PASS WITHOUT...
CRASH ROMEO – Gave Me The
Clap (Trustkill) – Oh what the hell is this!? Matter and mind and freewill
and technicolour correlation between brain-structure and mental light?
Nah mate, just more safety-by-numbers emopoop and scrape this off the soul
of my shoe right now please. Why? What is the damn point in another slick
wussy emo indie rock band who sound exactly like two hundred other fashion
parade emo hairstyle bands you heard already in the last two or three (or
ten) years. Sugary slick ballads and no moral responsibility. If there
really is a omnipresent god then why does he allow this? We can’t have
freewill and those perfect pitch auto-tuning computers and where is my
blunt and angry baseball bat. What the hell is the point in sounding just
exactly the same as all the others? Why is this in our post box!! Who sent
us this? This is an insult! “Punk aggression” it says here on this press
release! Come around here and say that, we’ll give you some punk aggression
you sickly sweet vomit inducing mummy’s boys, you couldn’t catch the clap
if you tried! You wouldn’t know how to!! This is worse than Fightstar!
If you really must know then www.crashromeo.com
– first person to give us a good reason why we should send this to them
in the post can damn well have it, although, if you like this kind of crap
then what are you doing here on this Organ page in the first place? Get
out of here! Oh for a sensitive harpsichord and something that rights itself
and a musical heart interrogated and reconciled with determination and
freedom, a reconciled moral experience? Nah, here the same old crap, consume
it now you dumb kids, you get the bands you damn well deserve... If you
could walk around a brain you would see all the neurones, but could you
see the thoughts and ideas and could you see a unified self? Materialistic
views and physical things are hitting my sense organs – Sense Organs? You
may choose a ready guide in some celestial voice and words like feeling,
memories, desire? Or is all materialism. Eliminative materialists? Hope,
memory, desire? Oh pass me another CD for the words of the prophets were
written on the studio wall and does everything have to echo to the sounds
of salesmen? You can download this week’s issue as a podcast, last
one out turn the lights off and throw in a lighted match on the pile please.

PUSSYCAT TRASH were around
back in the heyday of the UK riot-grrrl scene of the early
1990s. All over the zines
of the time and playing alongside much loved bands like HUGGY BEAR, LINUS
and SKINNED TEEN, they forged the backbone of what was for a brief time
a vital part of the then vibrant UK underground Riot Grrl scene. PUSSYCAT
TRASH also ran Slampt records, a label now long gone (not many of us left
from those times). It has come to our attention that the good people at
Troubleman have been (or are, or will be) slowly reissuing some of those
fine Slampt releases.

LEGION
OF PARASITES – Another Disaster (Overground) - Ranting DIY anarcho punk
rock beauty from back when these things really did make a difference and
people did a little more than just consume and/or pose about. A proper
sound and attitude from a time when people walked it rather than just talked
it. Raw, basic, more than a little naive and yeah, sounding just
a little bit dated now. Dated? Nah, raw and beautiful, stripped out, stripped
down and what a breath of ranting shouting wound-up-tight fresh air, proper
Anarchy, a little more than a 20 quid Anti-Flag t-shirt bought at Downloud
if you know what I mean.. Twenty six pissed off ranting lo-fi live raw
in your face, in the studio blasting it out in one take frantic punk rock
tracks – you sold out to the system sings the youthful angry voice, I wonder
if all these years later they still know what they meant back there? A
whole load of raw anarcho punk rock tracks from the early part of their
lives, probably the best part of their lives before the relatively bigger
budgets and the cynical smiles kicked in – shame there aren’t a few new
bands pumping out it right here right now with this kind of committed anger
and energy (and shame there aren’t a few more zines, labels and such the
hold it all together) and ah what the hell - that was then, this is now,
no one stuck to their guns did they, nothing is timeless and this comes
from another time and another world - everyone forgot to get ratty and
grew up, washed their jeans and paid their bills. Legion Of Parasites greatest
hits then, it’ll put a smile of your face if you were there back then,
it’ll do you a lot of good to check it out if you weren’t. Good looking
CD, good sleeve notes, nice big CD booklet and the artwork is right as
well...Nice one, can I have a sip of yer beer now mate? www.overgroundrecords.co.uk
