Organ on the Radio

The Organ hour - broadcasting at Resonance104.4FM every Sunday,9pm-10pm

The OTHER ROCK SHOW is presented by Marina O - The Other Rock Show is about exploring 'other' time signatures within structures of rock and filtering out the conventions of the 4/4 time easy option in favour of something a little more challenging.

Meanwhile on the ORGAN THING Sean O will be bringing you an eclectic mix of diverse left-field things from all points in between and beyond - the best new releases and demos that are circulating around the underground fanzine channels and landing here in the Organ office, along with news of forthcoming events and general alternative music news and goings on in and around London.  Expect an hour of challenging alternative music each week, the kind you don’t often get on ‘normal’ music radio shows and stations, expect special guests, expect who knows what...

ORGAN THING at Resonance 104.4FM, 9pm, Sunday 13th February 2011, with Sean O playing the music. No guests this week, just a whole bag of music and news of that music, event previews, new releases…

1/intro: TRANSISTOR SIX – Backyard Rocketship (Blackbean) - Our adopted theme tune so you know where you are. Transistor Six is Frances Castle, there’s lots of fine art and creativity to explore from Francis so please please do. You can now get the whole tune downloaded for yourselves and find links to her artwork, albums, her Hardy Tree project and lots more over at

2: MUSIC FROM THE FILM – The Main Attraction (self release) – The mystery of the very (very) experimental Music From The Film and their album How The West Was Once  – You have to like the way ‘breaking glass’ is listed on the instrument list, kind of sets the tone. Now this is different, different doesn’t always mean good of course, only a couple of minutes ago we were listening to something that certainly was ‘different’, awfully so.. This is differently good, strange sounds and rhythms that sound so unconventional yet somehow are pulled together to form something that resembles conventional notions on what a tune is. Who would have thought power-tools could be so melodically soothing? There are organically ‘conventional’ instruments here, there’s some very clever percussion, subtle rhythms that head all over the place, rhythms that make perfectly strange sense… more details here. - organthing082.html

3: QUADRILLES – Bobcat Goldtrait (self release) – Quadrilles and this is the b-side of their excellent debut single, the a-side is equally as good. Quadrilles are “a semi-instrumental triumvirate based in London. They mostly squeeze math rock into three-minute nuggets”, they turn those nuggets in to fine bits of delightful intelligent pieces of pop that are alive with brightness and tunes and… The single is out as a download thing on March 11th –

4: THE ROCK OF TRAVOLTA – Rock By Numbers (Big Red Sky) – Oxford’s Rock Of Travolta are back with a rather lean sounding album called Fine Lines. Back and sounding better than ever with their ambitious genre-pushing post rock come meaty prog that really is progressive in the real sense of the word. Beautifully crafted, forward looking  - find out more here where they have a free download single for you.

5: OUR MOUNTAIN - Wooden Heart  (self release) – Our Mountain are some kind of epic alt.rock band from Australia via New York, their progressive flavoured darkness comes laced with nihilistic poetry and a psychedelic twist all of their own. The first taste of hier debut album comes in the form of this free download track, the band are in London this week for three gigs, details of those dates, where you get the track, along with videos and other bits of things can be found via

6: BIG‘N – T.N.T (Africantape) - Big’n, cult Chicago noise legends of the early 90’s, have a new album, well a collection of old singles, compilation tracks, demos and such, out on February 7th. And don’t they still sound fresh! More details, links, an Organ review and more here - - and it seems the band are now reformed, touring and hopefully recording new material. Good to have them back, a band ahead of their time and still sound fresh with their alternative shape shifting big black noise.  And yes, that was their AC/DC cover, one last play of the beautiful noiseartwarp of a version before we put it to bed…

7: DAS WANDERLUST – I Am Not My Brain (self release) – Are a rather different pop band, they come from the North, their tunes are like operatic fairground rides, no their nothing like that, they’re full of Sparks and swans and awkwardly good twists and turns, singer/keyboardist Laura Susan Simmons takes you on those different rides, her band are rather unique, this is a track off their new album, Bones Hooves and Horns – you can go download the whole thing right now and pay as much as you feel is right, beware of that website though, is that the first piece of proper retro web design?
8: CAPSULE – Neuralize So Numb  (Download)  -Miami’s post-hardcore math metal flavoured twisted noise band Capsule have a new album on the way very soon, this is the first fruits of said album – sounding as uncompromisingly noisy and twisted as ever with this one minute six seconds outburst that cramps at least five minutes in there. More from

9: DAMERELS – She’ll Wear A Mask (Onec) – Damerels are from Plymouth, this is a track of a forthcoming single. The band are a no-messing three piece, they say they’re a garage punk rock’roll band, seems to a lot more than just that to them though, there’s other colours here. This track is part of a limited edition two 7” set that’s coming out, as a very limited edition, packaged in a handmade hand finished pizza box. More details from

10: DJEVARA – The Offer (Genin) – lead track off the rather committed London band’s new album. A rather positive post-hardcore statement of defiance, full review, details, connections and everything else here - - you can catch the band live in London this Wednesday 16th February at the New Cross in where there share the stage with another significant London underground band of recent times…. Thumpermonkey Lives…

11: THUMPERMONKEY LIVES! – Whateley (Tooting Bizarre) – Track off the London band’s most recent album, We Bake Our Bread Beneath Her Holy Fire – full-on old school pieces of real (Rael) prog rock, epic concepts, grandiose constructions, lush execution, a sound that revolves somewhere near the sound of the classic 70’s bands without sounding the least bit dated or old fashioned. Catch them on Wednesday February 16th with Djevara at the New Cross Inn, South London –

12: SPRING OFFENSIVE – Bail Out (self release) – Track of the impressive new five track EP from Ozford’s rather refined, rather colourfully emotional Spring Offensive. The EP is acoustic, the EP is rather warm, beautifully detailed piece of work, fine out more from

13: HERACLITE – Elpetai (NaxoProd/Urgence Disc) - -  Opening track from the forthcoming 2011 (March 7th) self titled album. Let us quote the press release “Who are these men? Greek, French, Flemish and Swiss people, a mixing of townsmen and highlanders. And what is it they’re doing? Making music of course! Tribal and primitive, mystical and sensual – Yes and in honour of what? Well my sir, in honour of the mysterious fragments of Heraclitus, of his sacred message sung in ancient Greek! Heraclitus, the old fool covered with mud? Himself!”
Heraclite are a band playing some kind of slightly strange tribal avant rock with vocals sung (almost chanted) in ancient Greek. Bits of groove, ‘ancient folk”, “afro-funk” and well, all rather unique… More from

14:  KAYO DOT – Abyss Hinge (Sleeping Birds Sighing In Roscolux) (Hyperhead) – Now then, this week New York’s Kayo Dot embark on a UK tour, Liverpool Monday, London Tuesday and then on to the end of the week, Tuesday is at the Vortex. We’re talking epically dramatic compositional pieces, that gap somewhere between notions of  classical and rock. "Disregarding any defining line between contemporary classical composition and rock band, Kayo Dot make music that unravels, unspools in its own time, with its own pace, its own huge scope. There's nobody quite like them...." (Organ album review).  This was a four minute taste of their most recent album, Coyote. Full details, dates, some old Organ album reviews, links and a live piece of YouTube here -

15: ROCKET CLOVER – Battery (Criminal) – Yes, that Battery, and sounding all acoustic and folky, for the German band have a whole album of folk-flavoured acoustic covers of Metallica songs on the way. It works, it isn’t just a gimmick, Metallica have always been a little more than just a crash bang heavy metal band, Rocket Clover rather show off the songs in this form -

16: KAYO DOT - Calonyction Girl (Hyperhead) – You didn’t think we’d just play the short interlude from their Cayote album tonight did you? This closing nine minute of the show tells you why you need to make the effort to see them on their UK tour this week – see track 14 for full details or

And that was it for this week, guest-free show this week, lots of music, enjoy exploring it all, thanks for listening. Marina in the chair next week for her Other Rock Show and more explore beyond the boundaries on mere 4/4. I’ll be back in two weeks with more guests, art, music and whatever we fond out there in the undergrowth in the coming days…
