This week’s Other Rock Show
info and links for your investigation:
About the show - rock, Jim,
but not as we know it. The Other Rock Show follows the rule of: if it's
in 4/4 all the way through, it ain’t getting in. OK, sometimes one gets
played in the in the interests of fairness, or because its sneakily imaginative...
or just to be contrary. So it doesn't matter if its avant, progressive
or math rock, thrash, death, folk, punk, cheese, chalk, whatever flavour
of sound you want to pin a name to - if the structure breaks away from
our bizarre Western four beat verse chorus blah obsession, and its and
(important!) it's a bit special, its welcome. Rules can set you free!
THINKING PLAGUE -
Unique, legendary, been around a couple of decades but still ahead of their
time - play very rare gigs and recently released a studio and a live album
on Cuneiform. www.cuneiform.com
65DAYSOFSTATIC - new
album out at the end of April, reviewed this week on the Organ
pages of organart.com. of UK tour in progress right now - more info at
www.monotremerecords.com
ZOMBI - US band with
a growing following, these tracks all downloads from www.zombi.us
or www.myspace.com/zombi
MAGMA - Truly strange
and unique, sing in their own invented language called Kobaian, a 70s legend
still gigging and composing today - this track one of four downloads from
www.rocktime.org/rio - website
for the Rock In Opposition festival happening in France over this very
weekend with one helluva line-up, including MATS AND MORGAN, Present,
Zao, Salle Gaveau, Guapo and Nebelnest Track down Magma via their
label @ www.seventhrecords.com
WILLIAM D DRAKE was
keyboard player/composer in Cardiacs, he has a strange and lovely solo
album out now called 'Briny Hooves' on sheBear records. This song was about
squishing a snail, and was followed by BOB DRAKE who was guitar
and keyboard player/composer in Thinking Plague singing about getting aroused
by a Griffin, as you do. Bob and Bill have never met and are probably not
related, living on different continents much like ostriches and rheas.
'Griffin' can be downloaded with much more from www.bdrak.com
HELLA are now a full
band instead of a duo, this is from their new album out on Ipecac records
www.ipecac.com
The splendid FULBOURNE
TEVERSHAM include people from Polar Bear, this from their new album
on Pickled Egg Records called Count Herbert II - www.pickled-egg.co.uk
ZS are from Brooklyn
New York, serious experimental other rock - go explore via www.zzzsss.com
or www.myspace.com/zstheband
The ARAB ON RADAR
track played tonight is from a Skin Graft Records re-release... this now
split band have a couple of great offshoots like Chinese Stars and Made
In Mexico ... www.skingraftrecords.com
(lots of free downloads worth having here)
RICHARD PINHAS makes
enormous gorgous warm buzzing soundscapes often held together with great
drums and has a brand new double album out on Cuneiform now - www.cuneiformrecords.com
...this lovely track goes against all the principles of the Other Rock
Show (its in four, its just a bunch of musicians repeatedly playing the
major scale ad infinitum - how perverse!) ...and why not?
THE BOOK OF KNOTS
are an excellent offshoot of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, well that’s how
we found them... more next time, check out www.sleepytimegorillamuseum.com
or www.myspace.com/thebookofknots
CRIME IN CHOIR - recent
album Trumpery Metier - Californian band Crime In Choir includes people
from the F*cking Champs, At The Drive-In and The Mass ...superb album,
from the Gold Standard Laboratories label in LA - www.crimeinchoir.net
